AbstractObjectiveTo assess the nutritional status and dietary practices of 0–24-month-old children living in Brazilian Amazonia.DesignCross-sectional study. Information on children’s dietary intakes was obtained from diet history data. Weight and length were measured for anthropometric evaluation. Fe status was assessed using fasting venous blood samples; Hb, serum ferritin and soluble transferrin receptor concentrations were measured.SettingThe towns of Assis Brasil and Acrelândia in the state of Acre, north-west Brazil.SubjectsA total of sixty-nine randomly selected 0–24-month-old children.ResultsOf these children, 40·3 % were anaemic, 63·1 % were Fe-deficient, 28·1 % had Fe-deficiency anaemia and 11·6 % were stunted. Breast-feeding was initiated by 97·1 % of mothers, followed by early feeding with complementary foods. The dietary pattern reflected a high intake of carbohydrate-rich foods and cow’s milk, with irregular intakes of fruit, vegetables and meat. All infants and 92·3 % of toddlers were at risk of inadequate Fe intakes. Fe from animal foods contributed on average 0·5 % and 14·3 % to total dietary Fe intake among infants and toddlers, respectively.ConclusionsPoor nutritional status and inadequate feeding practices in this study population reinforce the importance of exclusive breast-feeding during the first 6 months of life. Greater emphasis is required to improve the bioavailability of dietary Fe during complementary feeding practices.

Malnutrition is one of the major causes of mortality for children in developing countries. Inappropriate feeding practices can have profound consequences for the growth, development, and survival of infants and children. A cross sectional study was carried out among 180 mother-infant pair of the tribal (Garo) and Non-tribal (Non-Garo) households at Madhupur Upazilla in Tangail region. The objectives of the study were to assess the feeding behavior of Garo and Non-Garo mothers and also prevalence of malnutrition among infants and young children. More than half of Garo respondents had smaller family size and a higher spending on food compared to Non-Garo respondents. From the breast feeding related information it was seen that colostrum was given to their babies as the first food in Garo (81.2%) and Non Garo groups (63.4%) respectively. It was also observed that 12.2% Garo mothers gave powder milk, but the non-Garo mothers preferred honey and sugar water. Exclusive breast-feeding in Garo and Non-Garo areas were 64.6% and 45.7% respectively. In Non-Garo areas breast feeding continued longer times than Garo areas. The predominance of moderate to severe underweight in Non-Garo and Garo areas were 42.21% and 34.44% respectively. A similar trend of stunting and wasting was found in both groups of the infants. Finally, it can be clearly viewed and concluded that the feeding practices of mothers from Garo community were better compared to Non-Garo communities, and largely depends on various socioeconomic factors that affect the nutritional status of their children.

Purpose The socioeconomic conditions of urban waste collectors are vulnerable. However, their nutrition vulnerability remains undocumented. Here we focused on dietary practices and the nutritional status of waste collectors of Dhaka city in Bangladesh. Methods A cross-sectional design was employed that included 130 waste collectors from 15 different sites of Dhaka city. The 24-hours recall method, body mass index (BMI) and BMI for age Z-score were used to determine dietary practices and nutritional status respectively. Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, and multinomial logistic regression analysis were used to observe the associations and their risk factors. Results The majority (58.5%) of the waste collectors were normal by BMI whereas 36.2%, 4.5%, and 0.8% were underweight, overweight, and obese respectively. The prevalence of underweight was higher among males and respondents less than 18-years old (P<0.001). The dietary pattern of the respondents was poor. Meals were mainly rice and vegetable-based. Consumption of meats, eggs and fruits was low. Only 18.4% and 16.92% respondents were found to consume meat and eggs at least once a day, respectively. In addition, 78.5% consumed insufficient foods in their main meals, 9.2% had skipped meals and 13.1% consumed stale food and food waste regularly. Consumption of less than three main meals a day and food of poor dietary quality were risk factors of underweight. Conclusion Findings demonstrated that waste collectors in Dhaka city had poor nutritional status which was primarily associated with inadequate dietary intake. Increased quality and quantity of food in the diet, which could be achieved through appropriate health and nutritional support, are needed to overcome the situation.

Background: To assess the awareness about breast feeding practices and to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice about the signs and symptoms of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) and vitamin A rich foods intake among mothers of children below 5 years in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh (AP) in South India.Methods: A population based cross-sectional study was conducted on 284 mothers (age range 14 to 36 years) during June 2011 and September 2011. A combined simple and systematic random sampling strategy was used to select mothers from one tribal, rural and semi urban area with a representative sample of the Srikakulam district. A standardized structured questionnaire that was developed and validated by the National institute of nutrition, Hyderabad was utilized for this study.Results: The awareness of vitamin A and night blindness was 68.7% (95% confidence intervals (CI): 62.9–74.0) (n=195) and 93.7% (95% CI: 90.2–96.2) (n=266) respectively. The knowledge of signs and symptoms of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) was nil among illiterate mothers and low among literates; with primary education, adjusted odds ratio (OR): 0.01 (95% CI: 0.00, 0.06) and with secondary education, OR: 0.19 (95% CI: 0.06, 0.62) compared to mothers with graduation and above.Conclusions: There is a need to increase the awareness and knowledge about VAD among mothers with children below 5 years in the southern state of AP.

Background: Breastfeeding is the normal way of providing young infants with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. Methods: A community based cross sectional study was conducted among 800 mothers from urban and rural areas of Rangareddy District. A pre designed pre tested questionnaire was used to interview the mothers. Questionnaire contained questions related to demographic factors and breast feeding practices. Institutional Ethical clearance was taken. Results: The overall prevalence of exclusive breast feeding was 65%, being comparatively more in rural area (68%) which was statistically significant. Colostrum was discarded by 15% mothers in urban and 9% in rural area. Breast feeding was initiated within 1 hour in 184 (46%) in urban area and in 148 (37%) in rural area. Conclusions: Though mothers from rural area had certain favorable breast feeding practices such as demand feeding, colostrum being given but still various inappropriate practices were prevalent in both rural and urban areas.

Introduction: Lack of knowledge and proper feeding practices contribute to higher childhood morbidity and mortality. The aim of the study wasto evaluate the mother’s knowledge and practices in terms of quantity, quality and timing of complementary feeding in infant and young child.Methods: A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted between June, 2010 to October, 2011, at Kanti Children's Hospital, Nepal, involving 1100 mothers of children from 6 to 24 months of age who attended outpatient department of this hospital, applying systematic sampling technique using semi-structured questionnaire.Results: Eighty-seven percent of mothers had knowledge about the duration of exclusive breast feeding but only 33.0% practiced it and 21.0% breast fed their children up to 3 months. Eighty-seven percent of mothers knew when to start complementary feeding and 53.27% of mothers used the marketed weaning food. lito alone was offered by 28.27% as complementary food. Though 36.6% had proper knowledge of frequency of complementary feeding, only 33.27% were actually practicing it and 9.9% were offering more frequent thanrecommended. About half of the mothers fed their child with the food of appropriate consistency and 66.0% fed with the appropriate amount. But only 15.82% mothers fed their children with ideal frequency, sufficient amount and ideal quality.Conclusions: There was a knowledge and practice gap of duration of exclusive breast feeding and initiation and continuation of ideal complementary feeding. Background: The benefits of breastfeeding are well established and for the most part it is rather beneficial for children to drink their mother's milk One of the most commonly cited benefits of breastfeeding is that it helps connect mothers and their children; the baby feels its mother's body warmth and heartbeat (reminiscent of the womb it has left) and can become familiar with its mother's smell. Studies have shown that babies who are breastfed are more likely to reach adulthood. Breast milk is the ideal food for the infant under any circumstance. Objective of present study was to assess the breast feeding and infant feeding practices among mothers of infants aged 0- 12 months.Methods: A Community based cross-sectional study among mothers of infants aged 0-12 months at field practice area of Narayana Medical College, Nellore. This Study was undertaken during March to May 2016. A sample size of 112 respondents were included in this study.Results: 112 mothers of infants aged 0-12 months were included in this study. The source of knowledge regarding breast feeding among these mothers was health personnel 60 (53.57%), Family members was the second most common source 35 (31.25%) fallowed by others 17 (15.18%).Conclusions: Family support and mother’s literacy play important role in promoting breast feeding among mothers. Health education given to mothers helps them to establish breast feeding and take care of their infants.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 8.65pt .0001pt 13.5pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 31.5pt;"><span style="font-size: 10pt;" lang="en-us" xml:lang="en-us">This study aimed to analyze the impacts of feeding practices on underfive children’s nutritional status in different level of household food security. The study design was a cross-sectional study. Data on feeding practices were collected through personal interviews used questionnaire and nutritional status was calculated by using WHO-NCHS z-score. The average scores of feeding practices among samples were categorized as low (54.4%) and children of group very food-insecure had the lowest score of feeding practices. There was a significantly difference among the groups in the scores of sample’s feeding practices. The study showed that about 86 percent of children were categorized as normal (BB/TB indicator), but there were 11.6 percent categorized as wasting, while 32.0 percent and 54.3 percent categorized as underweight and stunting, respectively. Statistical analyses showed significant difference in term of nutritional status. There was a significant correlation between child’s nutritional status (BB/U, TB/U and BB/TB) and household food security. The study showed that child’s nutritional status (BB/TB) was influenced by energy’s adequacy level.</span></p>

Infant and young child feeding practices have substantial consequences for the growth, development, and survival of children. Children should be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life and thereafter continue to breastfeed for 2 years or longer. Children are vulnerable to malnutrition thus nutrition and health status of the confined children is of interest. The purpose of this study was to establish feeding practices of children 0-59 months incarcerated with their mothers in selected women’s prisons in Kenya. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted on an exhaustive sample of 202 children and 193 mothers, drawn from a sample of eight out of the 35 women prisons in Kenya. Data collection tools included: a structured researcher-administered questionnaire for mothers and children. Exclusive breastfeeding rate was 69.4%; continued breastfeeding at 1 and 2 years year (88.5%; 52.2%). The mean Dietary Diversity Score (DDS) was 3.52 ± 1.04 foods groups out of 7 groups with 53.3% having attained the minimum DDS and 86.5% of breastfed children having attained the minimum frequency meal consumption. About half of the children (48.6%) attained the minimum acceptable diet. In terms of nutritional status, 21.4% of the children were stunted, 3.8% wasted and 7.5% were underweight. Dietary practices were associated with underweight; not attaining the minimum dietary diversity and minimum acceptable diet was associated with underweight (p = 0.012; p = 0.014); Illness 2 weeks prior to the study was correlated with underweight (p=0.012). Feeding practices significantly influenced nutritional status among children accompanying incarcerated mothers in prisons in Kenya.
