Background: An urgent need exists for evidence-based dietary guidance early in life, particularly regarding protein intake. However, a significant knowledge gap exists in the effects of protein-rich foods on growth and development during early complementary feeding. Methods: This is a randomized controlled trial of infant growth and gut health (primary outcomes). We directly compare the effects of dietary patterns with common protein-rich foods (meat, dairy, plant) on infant growth trajectories and gut microbiota development (monthly assessments) during early complementary feeding in both breast- and formula-fed infants. Five-month-old infants (up to n = 300) are randomized to a meat-, dairy-, plant-based complementary diet or a reference group (standard of care) from 5 to 12 months of age, with a 24-month follow-up assessment. Infants are matched for sex, mode of delivery and mode of feeding using stratified randomization. Growth assessments include length, weight, head circumference and body composition. Gut microbiota assessments include both 16S rRNA profiling and metagenomics sequencing. The primary analyses will evaluate the longitudinal effects of the different diets on both anthropometric measures and gut microbiota. The secondary analysis will evaluate the potential associations between gut microbiota and infant growth.Discussion: Findings are expected to have significant scientific and health implications for identifying beneficial gut microbial changes and dietary patterns and for informing dietary interventions to prevent the risk of overweight and later obesity, and promote optimal health.Clinical Trial Registration:www.ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier: NCT05012930.

Adequate and balanced nutrition is essential to promote optimal child growth and a long and healthy life. After breastfeeding, the second step is the introduction of complementary feeding (CF), a process that typically covers the period from 6 to 24 months of age. This process is, however, still highly controversial, as it is heavily influenced by socio-cultural choices, as well as by the availability of specific local foods, by family traditions, and pediatrician beliefs. The Società Italiana di Pediatria Preventiva e Sociale (SIPPS) together with the Federazione Italiana Medici Pediatri (FIMP), the Società Italiana per lo Sviluppo e le Origine della Salute e delle Malattie (SIDOHaD), and the Società Italiana di Nutrizione Pediatrica (SINUPE) have developed evidence-based recommendations for CF, given the importance of nutrition in the first 1000 days of life in influencing even long-term health outcomes. This paper includes 38 recommendations, all of them strictly evidence-based and overall addressed to developed countries. The recommendations in question cover several topics such as the appropriate age for the introduction of CF, the most appropriate quantitative and qualitative modalities to be chosen, and the relationship between CF and the development of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) later in life.

The present study aims to comprehensively analyse trends in complementary feeding indicators (Introduction of solid, semi-solid, and soft foods at 6–8 months (INTRO), Minimum Dietary Diversity (MDD), Minimum Meal Frequency (MMF) and Minimum Acceptable Diet (MAD)) among children aged 6–23 months in Bangladesh. The study used data from four rounds (2007, 2011, 2014, and 2017–2018) of nationally representative Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys (BDHSs). The Cochran–Armitage test was performed to capture the trends in complementary feeding practices and intake from specific food groups. BDHSs are periodically conducted cross-sectional surveys in all seven administrative divisions of Bangladesh. The present analysis was performed among 8116 children (1563 in 2007, 2137 in 2011, 2249 in 2014, and 2167 in 2017–2018) aged 6–23 months. Overall, a decreasing trend was observed in all the complementary feeding indicators except INTRO from 2007 to 2014, but a substantial increase in MDD, MMF and MAD was noted in 2017–2018. A statistically significant reduction in consumption from different food groups such as legumes and nuts (p < 0.001), dairy products (p = 0.001), vitamin-A-rich fruits or vegetables (p < 0.001), and other fruits and vegetables (p < 0.001) was also observed. However, a positive trend was noted in the consumption of grains/roots/tubers (p = 0.027), and meat/fish/egg (p < 0.001). After experiencing a significant decreasing trend during 2007–2014, the recent BDHS indicates improvements in all complementary feeding indicators among young children in Bangladesh, which calls for integrated, multisectoral, and multicomponent interventions to sustain this progress.

ABSTRACT: THE RELATIONSHIP OF MOTHER'S KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE PATTERN OF COMPLEMENTARY FEEDING OF BREASTFEEDING (MPASI) WITH NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF INFANTS AGED 6-24 MONTHS IN THE AREA OF KEDAWUNG PUSKESMAS, KADAWUNG REGENCY, CIREBON REGENCY Introduction: Malnutrition is one of the problems in infants and children that can lead to impaired growth and development. Infants aged 6-24 months are not enough just to give breast milk alone, but the presence of complementary foods (MPASI).Objective: To determine the relationship between a mother's knowledge about how to give food can cause babies to be malnourished.Research Methods: The subjects in this study were infants aged 6-24 months at the Kedawung Health Center, Kedawung District, Cirebon Regency. Respondents are mothers who have babies aged 6-24 months as many as 27 people. This type of research is observational with a cross-sectional approach, the method is through interviews using questionnaires with data collection techniques using simple random sampling and weight measurement using digital scales. The data analysis technique used the Chi-Square test with a significant level of 0.05 on SPSS 16.0 for windows. Results: The results showed that most of the mothers had knowledge about complementary feeding patterns as many as 12 people (44%), good category 7 people (26%). However, there are still 8 (30%) mothers who have less knowledge and there is a significant relationship between mothers' knowledge about the pattern of giving complementary foods to breast milk and the nutritional status of infants aged 6-24 months. This is indicated by the value of p = 0.062 < 0.05.Conclusion: Suggestions in this study are the need to increase mother's knowledge, especially about nutrition related to complementary feeding of breast milk in her baby, immediately take care as soon as possible in infants with poor nutritional status, and the role of health services in handling it. . Malnutrition is very necessary for the continuity of infant growth and development, including through counseling, discussions and other activities by nutrition officers and posyandu cadres in the Kedawung Health Center area, so that good eating patterns and complementary breastfeeding can be implemented in an effort to improve nutritional status. Keywords: mother's knowledge, nutritional status INTISARI: HUBUNGAN PENGETAHUAN IBU TENTANG POLA PEMBERIAN MAKANAN   PENDAMPING ASI DENGAN STATUS GIZI BAYI USIA 6-24 BULAN DI WILAYAH PUSKESMAS KEDAWUNG KECAMATAN KEDAWUNG KABUPATEN CIREBON Pendahuluan: Kekurangan gizi merupakan salah satu masalah pada bayi dan anak, yang dapat mengakibatkan terganggunya pertumbuhan dan perkembangannya. Abstract Objective: To describe Brazilian health professionals’ perception about the Baby-Led Weaning (BLW) method use for complementary feeding. Methods: Cross-sectional, descriptive study including 458 health professionals graduated in Nursing, Speech Therapy, Medicine, Nutrition or Dentistry and working in Pediatrics, being directly or indirectly involved with pediatric nutrition. We used a convenience non-probability sampling. The questionnaire applied to participants addressed demographic characteristics, academic degree, workplace, knowledge about clinical practice and perceptions about the possible advantages of the BLW method. Results: Participants had a mean age of 34.5±8.5 years, 64.6% of them working in Southeast Brazil and 65.3% being nutritionists. Most participants reported being acquainted with the BLW method (82.0%). Regarding clinical practice, 38.3% mentioned having recommended the BLW some times, 37.5% often and 20.5% always. Most participants fully agreed that the BLW method could have advantages for babies, for example, having them more likely to share family meals, facilitating adaptation to food flavors and consistencies, enhancing chewing and favoring the development of motor skills. On the other hand, important disagreements were also expressed regarding the BLW convenience and the possibility to create less concerns or anxiety in parents. Conclusions: The BLW method reported as advantageous, but disagreements were also raised, probably because scientific evidences on the suject are scarse. Further investigation is needed so we can better understand the risks and benefits and health care professionals can feel effectively assisted to offer support and advice to parents and caretakers.

Complementary feeding is the systemic process of introduction of semisolid or solid food in infant at the right time in addition to mother’s milk in order to provide needed nutrition to the baby. A cross sectional study was conducted from January to December, 2020 to assess the level of knowledge and practice of nursing mothers regarding complementary feeding. Total 177 nursing mother were selected purposively and interviewed with a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire. Face to face interview was conducted to collect data. P-value less than 0.05 were set as statistically significant. The knowledge and practice score were categorized into good (≥70%), satisfactory (50 to 70%), and poor (≤50%). Out of 177 respondents, majority 109(61.6%) had satisfactory knowledge regarding complementary feeding, 33(18.6%) had good knowledge and rest of them 35(19.8%) had poor knowledge regarding complementary feeding among the nursing mother. On the other hand 62.7% respondents had poor Practices, 24.9% had satisfactory practices and 12.4% had good practices regarding complementary feeding among the nursing mothers. There was highly significant association between knowledge and practice of complementary feeding (p <.000). Nursing mother’s knowledge regarding complementary feeding time was inadequate and practices were inappropriate. . It is the responsibility of health professionals to pass on the current information about proper infant feeding to mothers/care takers for promoting the healthy complementary feeding of the breastfeed child.

While the household in which a child grows up is considered a critical environment that influences nutrition outcomes, there is little research examining the influence of household composition and structure on complementary feeding practices. This study examined the influence of household structure and composition on complementary feeding practices, using the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS), 2000 to 2016. The composition variables were calculated from the attributes of household members (alters) and the structure variables from their kinship status. A multilevel mixed-effects regression model, specifying survey rounds as the random effect, was used to examine the association between household structure/composition and the Minimum Meal Frequency (MMF) and Minimum Dietary Diversity (MDD). The average Marginal Effects (MEs) were calculated to facilitate practical interpretation. Children of caregivers with a higher number of alters (degree), unique number of kinship category (effect size), closely related (constraint), and mixed-age alters (age diversity) seemed to increase the probability of meeting the MDD. Degree and effective size decreased the probability of meeting MMF, while constraint increased it. Overall, this study revealed some associations between household structure and composition and complementary feeding practices. Hence, complementary feeding interventions could be adapted to account for the household structure and composition variations.

Abstract: The importance of complementary foods as complementary feeding for babies has become breastfeeding mother’s common knowledge. Impaired growth and development of infants and children aged 12-24 months is the low quality of complementary foods caused by unsanitary storage areas and uncontrolled temperatures. Therefore, a research was made in the form of designing a complementary food warmer box which aims to maintain the quality of complementary foods for breastfeeding, especially for career women who spend most of their time outside the home and not with babies. The MPASI heating box is made using a Peltier module with a thermoelectric working concept powered by an electric current or battery so that it can be used anywhere and anytime.            Keywords: MPASI; Thermal Sensor; Thermoelectric; Warming Box  Abstrak: Pentingnya MPASI sebagai asupan pendamping bayi sudah menjadi pengetahuan umum setiap ibu menyusui.
