Of all the analytical techniques in electron microscopy, X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS) is perhaps the most useful. It provides a quick identification of the elements and even with semiquantitative methods; a reasonable composition can be obtained. However, in the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), there are materials systems in which severe peak overlaps of heavier elements L and M lines cannot be easily deconvolved with lighter elements' K lines. In addition, without a sufficient overvoltage in the SEM, even identification of the heavier elements can be difficult. In the analytical electron microscope (AEM), there is always sufficient overvoltage to excite all of the elements' K-lines. However, all of the K-lines might not be able to be detected with commercially available instruments. This is illustrated in Fig.l where the maximum energy of the detector system might be set to 10, 20, or 40 keV.

AbstractWith exquisite design and unique style, the painted sculptures of Tutang Buddha and two attendants Buddha in Jingyin Temple are precious cultural heritages of China. The sculpture of Tutang Buddha, which was carved from a mound and painted by ancient craftsmen, was rarely found in ancient China. However, due to natural and human factors, the sculptures were severely damaged. Obviously, they require urgent and appropriate protection and restoration. In this study, samples taken from the sculptures were analysed through multiple analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM–EDS), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM) and granulometry. The analysis results enable us to infer the techniques used by the craftsmen in making the sculptures and provide a reliable evidence for the conservation and future protection of these and similar sculptures.

One of the main tasks in the study of historic buildings is the need to identify the original materials and extensions, which often have historic character. The next task concerns the determination of the composition and structure of the historical, diagnosis technique to develop original paint. The article presents the preliminary results of paintings. Methods were used with the scanning electron microscope was equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDS).

AbstractClosed form analytical equations used to calculate the collection solid angle of six common geometries of solid-state X-ray detectors in scanning and scanning/transmission analytical electron microscopy are presented. Using these formulae one can make realistic comparisons of the merits of the different detector geometries in modern electron column instruments. This work updates earlier formulations and adds new detector configurations.

ABSTRACTIn this work, the synthesis of dense Pd/α–Al2O3 and Pd-Ag/α–Al2O3 ceramic composite membranes was done through the sequential electroless plating technique of Pd and Ag. The precursors are solutions of PdCl2 and AgNO3 and N2H4 salts, as reducing agent. The membranes were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). The permeation tests of H2 and N2 was carried out at 20 psi of pressure and at 25°C, resulted πH2=5.2x10-9 mol H2/m2·s·Pa and πN2=8.2x10-10 mol N2/m2·s·Pa.

This study was carried out on leaching of tailings at 30 ᵒC and 40 ᵒC. The mineralogical and chemical composition of the tailings material were determined by Quantitative X-Ray Diffractometry (QXRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy combined with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDAX). The study revealed that the tailings contain sulphides (arsenopyrite and pyrite) which can leach to produce arsenic (As) and other ions in solution. The acid released during leaching depends on the temperature of leaching. More acid was produced at higher temperature (40 ᵒC) than lower temperature (30 ᵒC). It was established that arsenic precipitation from solution was higher at higher temperature (40 ᵒC) than lower temperature (30 ᵒC). Mimicking the study in a typical tailings environment, it could be proposed that As mobilisation will be enhanced at lower temperature (30 ᵒC) than at higher temperature (40 ᵒC). Keywords: Tailings, Leaching, Arsenopyrite, Heavy metals and Temperature
