The selection of polymorphs of the organic compound 5-methyl-2-[(2-nitrophenyl)amino]-3-thiophenecarbonitrile, ROY, is studied experimentally in the confined space between two horizontal glass plates when an acetone solution of ROY of variable concentration is injected at a variable flow rate into water. Depending on the local concentration within the radial flow, a polymorph selection is observed such that red prisms are favored close to the injection center while yellow needles are the preferred polymorph close to the edge of the injected ROY domain. At larger flow rates, a buoyancy-driven instability induces stripes at the outer edge of the displacement pattern, in which specific polymorphs are seen to crystallize. Our results evidence the possibility of a selection of ROY polymorph structures in out-of-equilibrium flow conditions.

Hawthorn oil has been shown to own many health benefits, such as being used as a folk medicine. However, the oxidation resistance presented in hawthorn fruit has not been clearly characterized. In order to promote the researches on hawthorn oil, we explored the selection of supercritical fluid extraction conditions and antioxidation of hawthorn oil. To begin with, we detected that the order of impact among four factors of supercritical CO2 extraction was: material degree > resolving temperature > extraction temperature > extraction pressure. In addition, using material degree as 40 mesh to 60 mesh, resolving temperature as 55 °C, extraction temperature as 45 °C, extraction pressure as 25 MPa could obtain the highest extraction yield, namely 2.13%. Meanwhile, we explored antioxidation of hawthorn oil on plant and animal oil. Hawthorn oil showed some effect in stabilizing plant and animal oil. Additionally, it could generate synergistic effect with citric acid, ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxytoluene during antioxidation process in plant and animal oil.

The retention behavior of a wide variety of stationary phases was compared in supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) and normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (NP-HPLC). We also attempted to elucidate the retention behavior in SFC by investigating the selectivity of the different stationary phases. SFC separation conditions with polar stationary phases, such as silica gel (SL) and diol (Diol) phases, operate via adsorptions that include hydrophilic and ionic interactions similar to those in NP-HPLC. Moreover, non-polar stationary phases, such as pentabromophenyl (PBr), pyrenylethyl (PYE), and octadecyl (C18), could be used despite the non-polar mobile phase conditions, because the dispersion and π-π interactions were stronger in SFC than in HPLC. These results reflect the selectivity of the stationary phase and its retention factor, thus providing useful information for the selection of appropriate stationary phases for particular analytes.

The selective polymorph synthesis of aragonite, vaterite and calcite was done by changing the conformation of chitosan molecules. Aragonite crystals in hexagonal prism-like shape were obtained in chitosan precipitates, vaterite crystals in hexagonal symmetrical plate-like shape were prepared in chitosan gel, and calcite nanoparticles were obtained in chitosan sol. The phenomenon of polymorph selection of biominerals by the morphology of biomacromolecules indicates that the studies on the relation between biominerals and biomacromelecules have general interest not only in bionics, but also in biometrics and related fields.

Supercritical fluid technology is a process using a supercritical fluid as a solvent. When a fluid is taken above its critical temperature (Tc) and critical pressure (Pc), it exists in a condition called the supercritical fluid state. The physico-chemical properties of a fluid in the supercritical state are in between those of a typical gas and liquid. Due to increasingly stringent environmental regulations, supercritical fluid technology (SFT) has gained wide acceptance in recent years as an alternative to conventional solvent extraction for herbal compounds as well as in many analytical and industrial processes. This article presents the practical aspects of SFT applications in selection of modifiers, on-line offline coupling techniques. SFT can also be used to clean up pesticides from herbal medicines. Carbon dioxide is most commonly used Supercritical Fluid (SF) as it is safe, inexpensive, non-toxic, non-inflammable and inert to most of the materials as well as its solvating strength is adjusted by modifier (methanol). SFT processes can be modeled to acquire useful information for better understanding of the extraction, mechanisms and optimization of the extraction procedures. In recent years, Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE) has emerged as a highly promising technology for production of herbal medicines and nutraceuticals with high potency of active ingredients.
