Abstract The study investigates predictors of the acquisition of selected English phonemes in a foreign language context. Czech students’ pronunciation was diagnosed by two tests; their ability to produce seven selected phonemes was assessed. Furthermore, data regarding the students’ learning histories was obtained through a questionnaire. Then a multiple regression analysis was conducted in order to identify predictors of the acquisition of the selected phonemes. The analysis uncovered several factors, the most significant being pre - school exposure to English and positive attitudes to English in adolescence, which appeared to influence the subjects’ pronunciation positively. Interestingly, several factors which relate to learning English at school appeared to exert a negative influence on the acquisition of the selected phonemes. Furthermore, besides the importance of long-term exposure to English starting before the age of six, the study also underscored the importance of metacognition in relation to autonomous learning.

As inadvertent eustachian tube injury during adenoidectomy can have serious short- and long-term implications, a simple anatomic correlate that could predict the optimal curette choice for adenoidectomy, especially in severely hypertrophic cases, is beneficial. This study evaluates the correlation of the distance between the lateral borders of the upper central incisors and the distance between the tori tubarius in the nasopharynx. One hundred one consecutive patients undergoing adenoidectomy at a pediatric tertiary care hospital were enrolled in this study. The patients ranged in age from 7 months to 15 years. No complications were noted in any of the procedures. During the operation, the distance between the central upper incisors was measured in millimeters, as was the inter-tubarius width (ITW). A multiple regression analysis was completed to assess the correlation between central incisor width and ITW. Age and inter-incisor width were positively correlated with ITW in a statistically significant manner (p = .007 and p = .006, respectively). The distance between the lateral borders of the upper central incisors predicts the distance between the tori tubarius in the nasopharynx. Therefore, an adenoid curette the window of which does not overlap the lateral aspects of the central upper incisors can be used relatively safely, even in fields with poor visualization.

Abstract. At the Collm Observatory of the University of Leipzig LF D1 low-frequency total reflection night-time wind measurements have been carried out continuously for more than two decades. Using a multiple regression analysis to derive prevailing winds, tides and the quasi-2-day wave from the half-hourly mean values of the horizontal wind components, monthly mean values of mesopause wind parameters are obtained that can be analysed with respect to long-term trends and influences of solar variability. The response of the prevailing wind to the 11-year solar cycle differs throughout the year. While in winter no significant correlation between the zonal prevailing wind and solar activity is found, in spring and summer a negative correlation between the TWC can be seen from the measurements. This is connected with stronger vertical gradients of the zonal prevailing wind during solar maximum than during solar minimum. Since the amplitude of the quasi-2-day wave is dependent on the zonal mean wind vertical gradient, this is connected with a positive correlation between solar activity and quasi-two-day wave activity.Key words. Our purpose was to examine the association between personality traits, depression and migraine in the long term. In 56 women with migraine a psychological assessment was carried out to assess the presence of major depression, and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were administered at baseline (T0) and after 6-7 years (T2). Frequency, severity and duration of migraine were recorded at T0, after treatment (T1) and at T2, and their relation to the prevalence of depression and to the MMPI and STAI data was examined (ANOVA, Student's t-test, X2 analysis, and multiple regression analysis). Pain parameters improved in all patients in T0-T1, but at T2 were higher in patients with depression at T0. The patients whose migraine improved at T2 had, at T0 and T2, significantly lower MMPI and STAI scores. Multiple regression analysis showed a correlation of the MMPI depression score and STAI 1,2 scores at T0 with headache frequency at T2. We conclude that the co-occurrence of migraine, personality changes and depression in women does not appear to influence the results of treatment at short-term, but it seems to be influential on headache history in the long term.

Using hourly monthly-median measured values from nine long-standing ionospheric sounding stations with data sets extending over several decades, best-fit empirical relationships are established for M (3000)F2 with different solar and ionospheric indices representative of state of the solar cycle. The statistical analysis shows that there is no difference in the degree of correlation in using one index over another. Comparisons are also made with similar relationships for monthly median f0F2 determined from the corresponding measurement data sets and the degree of correlation between the two ionospheric parameters is established.
