Earth's surface archives the combined history of tectonics and erosion, which tend to roughen landscapes, and sediment transport and deposition, which smooth them. We analyzed hillslope morphology in the tectonically active Dragon’s Back Pressure Ridge in California, United States, to assess whether tectonic uplift history can be reconstructed using measurable attributes of hillslope features within landscapes. Hilltop curvature and hillslope relief mirror measured rates of vertical displacement caused by tectonic forcing, and their relationships are consistent with those expected when idealizing hillslope transport as a nonlinear diffusion process. Hilltop curvature lags behind relief in its response to changing erosion rates, allowing growing landscapes to be distinguished from decaying landscapes. Numerical modeling demonstrates that hillslope morphology may be used to infer changes in tectonic rates.

Circa 1000, the main occupations of the large Jewish community in Muslim Spain and of the small Jewish communities in southern Italy, France, and Germany were local trade and long-distance commerce, as well as handicrafts. A common view states that the usury ban on Christians segregated European Jews into money lending. A similar view contends that the Jews were forced to become money lenders because they were not permitted to own land, and therefore, they were banned from farming. This article offers an alternative argument which is consistent with the main features that mark the history of the Jews: the Jews in medieval Europe voluntarily selected themselves into money lending because they had the key assets for being successful players in credit markets. After providing an overview of Jewish history during 70–1492, it discusses religious norms and human capital in Jewish European history, Jews in the Talmud era, the massive transition of the Jews from farming to crafts and trade, the golden age of the Jewish diaspora (ca. 800–ca. 1250), and the legacy of Judaism.

This book is a historical study of these manuscripts, exploring how and why the Greek Christians of medieval southern Italy persisted in using them so long after the end of Byzantine rule. Southern Italy was conquered by the Norman Hauteville dynasty in the late eleventh century after over 500 years of continuous Byzantine rule. At a stroke, the region’s Greek Christian inhabitants were cut off from their Orthodox compatriots in Byzantium and became subject to the spiritual and legal jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic popes. Nonetheless, they continued to follow the religious laws of the Byzantine church; out of thirty-six surviving manuscripts of Byzantine canon law produced between the tenth and fourteenth centuries, the majority date to the centuries after the Norman conquest. Part I provides an overview of the source material and the history of Italo-Greek Christianity. Part II examines the development of Italo-Greek canon law manuscripts from the last century of Byzantine rule to the late twelfth century, arguing that the Normans’ opposition to papal authority created a laissez faire atmosphere in which Greek Christians could continue to follow Byzantine religious law unchallenged. Finally, Part III analyses the papacy’s successful efforts to assert its jurisdiction over southern Italy in the later Middle Ages. While this brought about the end of Byzantine canon law as an effective legal system in the region, the Italo-Greeks still drew on their legal heritage to explain and justify their distinctive religious rites to their Latin neighbours.

To decipher the thermal history of mineralized systems across the Freegold Mountain area (Yukon, Canada), a combined geochronology (zircon U–Pb and hornblende, biotite, and whole rock Ar–Ar) and thermochronology (apatite and zircon (U–Th)/He) study was carried out. Previous U–Pb data combined with new U–Pb and Ar–Ar data show that intrusive bodies across the Freegold Mountain were emplaced during two protracted episodes, the first spanning from 109.6 to 98 Ma and the second between 79 and 68 Ma. Overprinting of the first intrusive event by a second magmatic hydrothermal event is suggested by a zircon U–Pb age of 108.7 ± 0.4 Ma for a chlorite-altered dyke and a whole rock Ar–Ar plateau age of 76.25 ± 0.53 Ma. Zircon (U–Th)/He data are between 66 and 89 Ma, whereas apatite (U–Th)/He data are scattered (38.7–109.9 Ma) and bracket the two magmatic emplacement events. Our combined data reveal a complex history of reheating that led to resetting of numerous chronometers. In most of the investigated magmatic hydrothermal systems, early fast cooling from igneous emplacement through hydrothermal alteration (between 900 and 200 °C) was followed by later and slower cooling accompanying post mineralization uplift and erosion (between 200 and 70 °C). Preliminary models indicate intrusive bodies associated with the Stoddart Cu–Mo ± W prospect cooled slowly (23 °C/Ma) compared with the ones spatially associated with the Revenue Au–Cu prospect (43 °C/Ma), and the similarity of the zircon U–Pb and (U–Th)/He ages from Revenue dyke further supports a rapid cooling from 700 to 180 °C. Erosion rates of 0.035–0.045 mm/year are consistent with tectonic quiescence during the Late Tertiary combined with the lack of Pleistocene glaciation in central Yukon. Such low rates of exhumation favour the formation and preservation of supergene mineralization, such as that found north of Freegold Mountain.

Abstract Uplift and erosion rates have been calculated for a large sector of the Campania-Lucania Apennine and Calabrian arc, Italy, using both geomorphological observations (elevations, ages and arrangement of depositional and erosional land surfaces and other morphotectonic markers) and stratigraphical and structural data (sea-level related facies, base levels, fault kinematics, and fault offset estimations). The values of the Quaternary uplift rates of the southern Apennines vary from 0.2 mm/yr to about 1.2–1.3 mm/yr. The erosion rates from key-areas of the southern Apennines, obtained from both quantitative geomorphic analysis and missing volumes calculations, has been estimated at 0.2 mm/yr since the Middle Pleistocene. Since the Late Pleistocene erosion and uplift rates match well, the axial-zone landscape could have reached a flux steady state during that time, although it is more probable that the entire study area may be a transient landscape. Tectonic denudation phenomena — leading to the exhumation of the Mesozoic core of the chain — followed by an impressive regional planation started in the Late Pliocene have to be taken into account for a coherent explanation of the morphological evolution of southern Italy.
