This article examines a group of five ballades which stand at the very opening of those set to music in the Machaut manuscripts. The importance of manuscript order to arguments about chronology has led to the neglect of order's role in the construction of meaning. While they are ostensibly individual lyric items, Machaut's first five music ballades collectively outline a very cogent narrative, from theje-lover's declaration of love to his death from refusal. In parallel with such an amorous progress, there is a poetic and musical progress as the authorial persona of the poet-composer poses and solves problems of formal musical organization, ultimately narrating a parallel (and arguably equally fictive) story of the creation of the polyphonic ballade. The duplication of one of these five ballades within several of the central Machaut sources is viewed as an invitation to read parallels between the opening five ballades in the music section and the opening 11 ballades in the music-less lyric section, the Loange des dames. Between them, the openings of these sections explain the emotional and professional situation of a writer whose very success as a poet-composer almost requires his je's failure as a lover-protagonist.

The Enthymeme, which is a central concept in Aristotle’s rhetoric, is also one of his most debated notions. A majority of the interpretations proceed from Aristotle’s own words “the enthymeme is a kind of syllogism” and most of them understand the enthymeme as a reduced syllogism or a syllogism based on the plausible. In this article different views of the Aristotelian enthymeme are examined, and an alternative outlook inspired by Aristotle’s own examples, is put forward. This is a suggestion that takes into consideration the context dependence, the dialogical nature and the need for presence (in a Perelmanian sense), in human communication and construction of meaning. The enthymeme is here viewed as a discursive process in which the reasoning of the speaker connects with the listener’s structures of meaning. An important phenomenon in this process is the establishment of coherence

In this paper, we propose a formal system, directly implementable on computer, allowing a detailed analysis of temporal expressions. The use of fonctional language facilitates the construction of meaning representations, which takes into account the fuzziness of natural languages and the dynamical character of understanding process (as the dynamical processing of the reference point à la Kamp).

Advertisement is an important business tool that enables companies to promote their products, as well as delivering a message. In this research, I use Nature Republic posters entitled “Soothing Gel” and “Soothing & Moisture Aloe Vera 90% Body”. I used qualitative approach in this research. Next, I use the theories of Multimodal Discourse Analysis for the first research question and Denotative and Connotative for the second research question. I aimed to discover what the meanings that are constructed through the visual images and how the meanings are supported by the written texts. Through the poster, Nature Republic is building the feelings of being beautiful, young, confident, natural, pure, and trustworthy to its consumers. In conclusion, Nature Republic is trying to make consumers believe in their products and deliver many values through its posters. Keywords: Advertisement, marketing, poster, multimodal discourse analysis, denotation, connotation.
