Abstract We examined the use of smoothing to enhance the detection of response coupling from the activity of different response systems. Three different types of moving average smoothers were applied to both simulated interbeat interval (IBI) and electrodermal activity (EDA) time series and to empirical IBI, EDA, and facial electromyography time series. The results indicated that progressive smoothing increased the efficiency of the detection of response coupling but did not increase the probability of Type I error. The power of the smoothing methods depended on the response characteristics. The benefits and use of the smoothing methods to extract information from psychophysiological time series are discussed.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common complications after cardiac surgery. Many studies have reported an incidence of 20%-40% in patients undergoing open heart surgery, and the peak incidence usually occurs between the postoperative days [Fuller 1989; Aranki 1996; Svedjeholm 2000; Maisel 2001]. AF is commonly self-limited and rarely results in postoperative death. However, postoperative AF (POAF) is often associated with complications, including stroke, heart failure, prolonged hospital stay, and increased costs [Maisel 2001; Bramer 2010]. Many pharmacological methods have been used to prevent this complication, and beta-blockers, which have been investigated in several studies, have demonstrated effectiveness [Ali 1997; Connolly 2003; Crystal 2004; Halonen 2006; Imren 2007]. There is currently a consensus in the use of beta-blockers for the prevention of POAF. However, whether the effect of beta-blockers on POAF is dose dependent has not been widely studied [Coleman 2004; Lucio 2004]. In addition, patients with different racial backgrounds have a different response to metoprolol based on body shape. In addition, the CYP2D6 genotypes are different among white and Asian patients. In this study dose-dependent prophylactic effects of beta-blockers, which were obtained in a single center.

In boundary extension (BE), people confidently remember seeing a surrounding region of a scene that was not visible in the studied view. However, the content near image boundaries might be uninteresting, serving only as a background for a central figure. In our experiments, we presented participants with 24 photographs with a defect (cut-out hole or black ink blot). Participants were instructed to memorize the photograph and then either reproduce the size of the hole/blot (BE task) or identify a change (distractor task). In Exp. 1, we showed participants printed photographs (18×13 cm) with cut-out holes. Participants systematically drew smaller holes (87.5% diameter, N=32). When we replaced the holes with black ink blots (Exp. 2), the bias was still present (91.4%, N=30). The computer-based version with size-adjustment of black blots (Exp. 3) yielded similar effects (92.8%, N=30), which disappeared (Exp. 4, 100.7%, N=30) if the probe blot sizes were randomized. We argue that BE occurs in the internal parts of photographs. We explored the effect in different media (paper/screen) and using different response tasks (free recall/adjustment). People show uncertainty in the adjustment tasks and reproduce remembered holes/blots as smaller (consistent with BE) if they are presented with the occluded content in the response phase.

In the decades since the fall of socialism, political jokes seemed to have lost their significance in Slovenia. In order to confirm and understand this change, we collected a sample of 200 jokes from five of the most popular Slovenian Facebook groups and analyzed the jokes and their targets. The results show that political jokes have indeed largely disappeared from the Slovenian public sphere: only three of the jokes in the sample target politicians. In this article, we argue that this development indicates a different response to the social pressures of the market economy. Whereas during socialism the source of anxiety was more or less apparent (the communist elite) and consequently easier to ridicule, in post-socialist societies, sources of anxiety are more diverse and impersonal, making them more difficult to target in jokes.

Populus alba ‘Villafranca’ clone is well-known for its tolerance to cadmium (Cd). To determine the mechanisms of Cd tolerance of this species, wild-type (wt) plants were compared with transgenic plants over-expressing an aquaporin (aqua1, GenBank GQ918138). Plants were maintained in hydroponic conditions with Hoagland’s solution and treated with 10 µM of Cd, renewed every 5 d. The transcription levels of heavy metal transporter genes (PaHMA2, PaNRAMP1.3, PaNRAMP2, PaNRAMP3.1, PaNRAMP3.2, PaABCC9, and PaABCC13) were analyzed at 1, 7, and 60 d of treatment. Cd application did not induce visible toxicity symptoms in wt and aqua1 plants even after 2 months of treatment confirming the high tolerance of this poplar species to Cd. Most of the analyzed genes showed in wt plants a quick response in transcription at 1 d of treatment and an adaptation at 60 d. On the contrary, a lower transcriptional response was observed in aqua1 plants in concomitance with a higher Cd concentration in medial leaves. Moreover, PaHMA2 showed at 1 d an opposite trend within organs since it was up-regulated in root and stem of wt plants and in leaves of aqua1 plants. In summary, aqua1 overexpression in poplar improved Cd translocation suggesting a lower Cd sensitivity of aqua1 plants. This different response might be due to a different transcription of PaNRAMP3 genes that were more transcribed in wt line because of the importance of this gene in Cd compartmentalization.

Abstract Background Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) is a potential cause of myocardial ischemia and may affect myocardial function at rest and during stress. CMD can be identified, in patients with non-obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD), by a reduced transthoracic Doppler-derived coronary flow reserve (CFR), which is an index of coronary arterial reactivity, and can be impaired in both obstructive CAD and CMD. The aim of this study was to investigate the dipyridamole-induced changes of global longitudinal strain (GLS) in patients with CMD. Methods 43 patients (29M, 14F; mean age 68±7 years) without obstructive CAD, assessed by invasive coronary angiogram, underwent dipyridamole stress echocardiography. Coronary flow was assessed in the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) and was identified as the colour signal directed from the base to the apex of the left ventricle, containing the characteristic biphasic pulsed-Doppler flow signals. CFR were determined as the ratio of hyperaemic to baseline diastolic coronary flow velocity. CMD was defined as CFR <2. GLS was measured using automated function imaging, through the positioning of three endocardial markers (two markers at the mitral annulus and one at the apex) in each apical view. Subsequently, the obtained segmental values of GLS were visualized as a bull's-eye map in a quick and feasible manner. We had optimal left ventricular endocardial tracking in the overall population. In each patient, we used a frame rate of 70 frames/sec for adequate 2D strain analysis. We analyzed GLS at each step of stress test and compared peak-dose values with baseline. Results Thirteen patients (30%) among the overall population showed CMD. There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between patients with or without CMD. GLS, at baseline, was significantly lower in patients with CMD (−16.9±3.78 vs. −17.8±3.77 – p<0.01). We observed a different response to dipyridamole stress echocardiography, between the two groups: GLS significantly increased up to peak dose in patients without CMD (from −17.8±3.77 to −19.3±4.09 – p<0.01), whereas on the other hand, a significant decrease from rest to peak dose was observed in patients with CMD (from −16.9±3.78 to −15.5±4.18 – p<0.01). There was a significant inverse correlation between CFR and delta GLS measured at rest and after dipyridamole peak dose (r=−0.82 – p<0.01). Conclusions GLS analysis, particularly performed by comparing dipyridamole peak-dose with baseline values, shows that in patients with CMD there is a different response of left ventricular myocardiim to stress test. It could be assumed that the inverse correlation between CFR and delta GLS reflects a progressive subclinical worsening of left ventricular myocardial function in these patients.
