The social structures within which we live and work have a profound effect on the success of our pursuits. These effects are too often poorly understood by those who shape public policy, leading to organizations that are antagonistic to the very goals they are meant to achieve. Unfortunately, this has been the case with public education in the United States. Data are presented that illustrate the way in which the incentive structure of our public school system leads the goals of its employees to diverge from those of the families it is intended to serve. Arguments in support of government-run schooling are discussed and refuted. An alternative system of mutually beneficial cooperation within a competitive market is proposed, based on its proven success in the more liberal parts of our economy. It is demonstrated that such a market system would unite the goals of educators and families, encourage innovation, and discourage many of the inefficient and educationally irrelevant practices engendered by the public school system.

Resumo Este artigo é baseado em um relato de experiência docente, em que tivemos a pretensão de estimular a reflexividade linguística dos alunos adolescentes da rede pública de ensino da capital cearense. O referencial teórico é pautado nos eixos conceituais: superdiversidade e transidioma (MOITA LOPES, 2013; BLOMMAERT; RAMPTON, 2011); multimodalidade e multiletramentos (JEWITT, 2010; SOARES, 2002; ROJO, 2012). Dessa forma, almejamos escrever como ocorrem os usos transidiomáticos nas práticas sociais dos alunos do 2o ano do ensino médio na construção de textos multimodais, a partir da perspectiva da superdiversidade e da multimodalidade. Diante do exposto, acreditamos que os usos transidiomáticos devem estar presentes nas práticas discursivas da escola, principalmente nas aulas de língua estrangeira, a fim de sensibilizar os alunos em prol de uma visão sociolinguística emancipatória. Experiência docente.   Transidiomatic practices in Spanish as a Second Language: multimodality in the public school Abstract This paper is based on a teaching experience, from a perspective of the linguistic reflexivity for high school students of a public school located in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. The theoretical framework is related to these approaches: superdiversity and transidiomatic uses of language (MOITA LOPES, 2013; BLOMMAERT; RAMPTON, 2011); multimodality and multiliteracies (JEWITT, 2010; SOARES, 2002; ROJO, 2012). Thus we intend to show how transidiomatic linguistic uses occur in the social practices of the students from high school of the second degree in Brazil. We will see, in fact, the construal of multimodal texts, from the perspective of the superdiversity and the multimodality. We consider transidiomatic uses as present in the classes, mainly in second language classes, in order to make the students aware of an emancipatory sociolinguistics view. Keywords: Transidioma. Historians agree that the public schools played a central role in the creation of Victorian society and that in particular they were seminal in the construction of that “mid-Victorian compromise” which made the mid-century an era of “balance,” “equipoise,” and accommodation. There is further agreement that the cadre of boys produced by the newly reformed public schools became that mid-Victorian governing and social elite which was at once larger, more broadly based, more professional and, to many, more talented than the one which preceded it. The importance of the public schools in this regard was, as Asa Briggs affirms, twofold. They assimilated the “representatives of old families with the sons of the new middle classes,” thereby creating the “social amalgam” which, in Briggs' view, “cemented old and new ruling groups which had previously remained apart.” Secondly, the singular expression of that amalgamation was an elite type, the “Christian Gentleman”—the result of an “education in character” administered under the influence of Dr. Arnold. Arnold was able to do this because he “reconciled the serious classes” (that is, the commercial middle class) “to the public schools,” sharing as he did “their faith in progress, goodness, and their own vocation.” At first, the schools “attracted primarily the sons of the nobility, gentry and professional classes.” Later, it was the “sons of the leaders of industry” who were, like earlier generations of boys, amalgamated with “the sons of men of different traditions” in a broadened “conception of a gentleman.”

Reports current research activities in public library services drawing from a series of interviews with 20 chief librarians. Findings reinforce earlier perceptions and findings about public library research activities. Of particular concern is the fact that research activity and method is largely confined to'simpler' issues of operational service development and does not extend to 'harder' research addressing the social and economic impact of the service. To assess trustworthiness and make best use of the data the interview transcripts are analysed using three techniques: initial data analysis by coding down, dilemma analysis, and intensive analysis carried out using the constant comparative method. Concludes that the restricted research capacity within the public library sector may endanger the realisation of its strategic potential.

The public library brings with itself the social dimension, which creates a space for training and social change. However, society requires innovations and libraries are part of this context. Thus, this work is justified by understanding the role that public libraries have for society. It lacks spaces for access to innovative technologies and information mediation actions. To make the research feasible, the research problem consists on the following question: to what extent do the investigations on public libraries aim at increasing innovation and makerspaces to reinforce their social function? Then, the aim of this study is to ascertain the number of publications in scientific journals that relate innovation and the makerspace in the emancipatory context of public libraries. Methodologically, it was drawn a qualitative and quantitative exploratory research. An exploratory search was carried out in databases considering papers pusblished by authors dealing with the themes, as well as in the abstracts of papers in journals and proceedings in the databases Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA) and the Base de Dados Referenciais de Artigos de Periódicos em Ciência da Informação (BRAPCI). Findings reveal that it lacks the relationship between public libraries, makerspace and information mediation, concomitantly, in investigations in the area of Information Science between the years 2009 and 2019.
