This article explores the victimizing experiences of individuals with mental illness using grounded inductive qualitative research methods, by extracting themes from 15 first-hand accounts of living with mental illness delivered on the TED Talks media platform. Emergent themes included (1) victimizing effects of the illness including the effects of medication and the effects of stigma, (2) normalcy, (3) the importance of help-seeking in the process of overcoming obstacles presented by mental health issues, and (4) victimization by others. We conclude that the speakers in our sample, even though they reflect an extraordinary level of functioning, still view themselves as what Becker (1991 [1963]) describes as outsiders, acting as moral entrepreneurs, crusading to normalize madness through a variety of strategies.

The study identified that the public sources of knowledge about mental illness are derived from family and peer contact and also through media exposure rather than formal learning opportunities in schools. The study highlights the need for a public policy debate on harmful effects of social stigma of mental illness and further need for ongoing attempts to educate general public and policy makers. Three major categories emerged through this process are:.1.Negative media portrayal of mental illness2.Sufferer stigma and caraer burden3.Mental illness and Moral PanicThe study identified that an atmosphere of moral panic exists against mental illness and that this moral panic is reflected in media coverage of crime by mentally ill offenders.ConclusionsStudy confirms negative public perceptions and stigma of mental illness.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the experiences that generate pleasure and suffering in the work of nurses in an oncopediatric inpatient unit. Methods: Qualitative, exploratory, descriptive study. Data collection took place from March to May 2018, through interviews with eight nurses in an oncopediatric inpatient unit. Results: The verbalized experiences of pleasure were the work developed with children, participation in the treatment and cure of patients and the recognition of family members in relation to the work performed. The suffering experiences were palliative care and death of patients, performing invasive procedures and organizing work. Final considerations: It was possible to analyze the experiences of pleasure and suffering of nurses in an oncopediatric unit through the psychodynamics of work, allowing to reinvent prevention and intervention measures by managers in health/mental illness processes at work.

ABSTRACT The background of this research came from the phenomenon are often seen the homeless people with mental illness or psychotic vagrant displaced and wandering in major cities including Bandung. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method with a deductive approach by reference to the effective coordination proposed by the State Services Commission (2008) , in which there are three main dimensions in coordination, the dimensions of the mandate, systems and behaviors. From this research, it can be concluded that the coordination in handling psychotic vagrant in Bandung still not associated with the dimensions of the mandate, systems and behaviors. In order to coordinate the handling of psychotic vagrant in Bandung can be effective, it needs improvement in some aspects related to the dimensions of coordination, namely in terms of commitment to leadership, the goals are clearly defined and agreed together, frameworks and accountability, performance measurement, accuracy and the ability of representation and leadership in the team, as well as shared culture and values.

Background: According to the literature reviewed, although families living with a mentally ill relative often face violence, this issue has been little studied in nursing. Methods: We conducted a qualitative research study to explore the experience of families dealing with this complex reality. We adopted Jacques Donzelot’s theory of the government of family as our theoretical framework and used grounded theory as our research methodology. In total, 14 participants who had been victims of violence perpetrated by relatives with severe mental illness were interviewed. Findings: Qualitative analysis led to the identification of five themes: (a) medico-legal apparatus; (b) experience of violence; (c) the family’s responsibility toward the violent relative; (d) exclusion and stigmatisation; and (e) suffering and resilience. The present paper focuses on the study’s central theme: the family’s responsibility toward the violent relative.

Background Research conceptualising recovery is predominantly Eurocentric. This paper develops the conceptualisation of recovery by Black African service users. Aims Our aim was to explore Black African service users’ experiences of recovery from mental illness and to understand how they conceptualise recovery. Methods Using a qualitative research approach and interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 Black African service users recovering from mental illness in England. Results Participants conceptualised recovery as a pragmatic and subjective concept distributed across a continuum of clinical, functional and spiritual dimensions, resilience, identity and their social and cultural backgrounds. Conclusions It seems critical for all stakeholders to ensure that these components are embedded in recovery-oriented services for Black African service users.
