Abstract Background Compensation and adaptation therapies have been developed to improve community functioning via improving neurocognitive abilities in people with schizophrenia. Various modes of delivering compensation and adaptation therapies have been found to be effective. The aim of this trial is to compare two different cognitive interventions, Compensatory Cognitive Training (CCT) and Computerised Interactive Remediation of Cognition–Training for Schizophrenia (CIRCuiTS). The trial also aims to identify if mismatch negativity (MMN) can predict an individual’s response to the compensation and adaptation programmes. Methods This study will use a randomised, controlled trial of two cognitive interventions to compare the impact of these programmes on measures of neurocognition and function. One hundred clinically stable patients aged between 18 and 65 years with a diagnosis of a schizophrenia spectrum disorder will be recruited. Participants will be randomised to either the CCT or the CIRCuiTS therapy groups. The outcome measures are neurocognition (BACS), subjective sense of cognitive impairment (SSTICS), social functioning (SFS), and MMN (measured by EEG) in people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Discussion This trial will determine whether different approaches to addressing the cognitive deficits found in schizophrenia spectrum disorders are of comparable benefit using the outcome measures chosen. This has implications for services where cost and lack of computer technology limit the implementation and dissemination of interventions to address cognitive impairment in routine practice. The trial will contribute to the emerging evidence of MMN as a predictor of response to cognitive interventions. Abstract Choir interventions confer psychological benefits for persons with dementia (PwD) and their caregivers. However, less is known about whether physiological function also exhibits improvements pursuant to such social-cognitive interventions. The present study, based upon a subsample of the Voices in Motion (ViM) project, explored whether participation in an intergenerational choir results in systematic improvements in gait velocity (indexed using a GAITRite computerized walkway) for both informal caregivers (n=14; 71.4% female) and PwD (n=14; 64.3% female). Longitudinal burst data from the first of three cohorts spanning 4 assessments over 3.5 months was analysed using multilevel modeling. Whereas caregivers exhibited significant improvements (p<.05) in gait velocity, PwD showed no improvement. Ongoing analyses are exploring additional cohorts, and whether improvements in gait dynamically covary with reductions in comorbidities (e.g., neuropsychological function, caregiver burden, depressive affect). These results underscore the potential of choir for facilitating both psychosocial and physiological function for caregivers and PwD.

Abstract There is an increasing interest in using touch-screen devices to conduct cognitive training and collect measurements of cognitive performance. However, older adults often have concerns such as anxiety about using these systems and poor comprehension of language instructions (Czaja & Lee, 2007). Given that Singapore is a multilingual society, we examined the deployment of an age-friendly multi-modal touch-screen platform (a game-based application on a tablet) in a cognitive intervention research. After modification of the platform to include features such as simplified instructions, multi-level prompts with a local accent, and four different instructional languages (including local dialects), participants were less reliant on the researchers and reported fewer difficulties in comprehending the instructions. The integrity and reliability of the data collected improved as a result. In sum, multilingual age-friendly touch-screen platform can be a novel yet effective method to study cognitive interventions in the Asian older adult populations.

In a national program to combat cervical uterine cancer (CUC) four basic elements should exist: primary prevention, early detection, diagnosis/treatment and palliative care. Of these, early detection is the most effective modality. One of the purposes of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is to encourage the use of research results with the assistance provided, reinforcing the importance of research for clinical practice. This study aimed to evaluate the evidence available in the literature regarding effective nursing interventions for the early detection of CUC. The selection of articles was performed in the databases: Scopus, PubMed, CINAHL, Lilacs and Cochrane. The sample of this review consisted of seven articles, with evidence levels 1, 2 or 3. The behavioral, cognitive and social interventions, showed positive effects in the early detection of CUC, especially the interactive cognitive interventions. It is suggested, when appropriate, to use a combination of interventions in order to obtain a more effective result.
