The size effect of magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in CoCr2O4 has been investigated by comparing two samples with different crystal sizes. One is bulk CoCr2O4 sample (referred as A), and the other is a nanocrystalline CoCr2O4 sample (referred as B). It has been found that crystal size dramatically affects the magnetic properties and MCE for CoCr2O4, and that the nanocrystalline material is more favorable for application than the bulk material. The above results are explained in terms of the effect of small size and its distribution for sample B on the intrinsic magnetic properties and magnetic entropy change.

Optical absorption spectra of the direct exciton of TlCl and TlBr micro-crystals are measured in evaporated thin films at 5.0K. The energy of the direct exciton bands shift to higher energy with decreasign micro-crystal size. The lower component of the doublet of the exciton in TlCl decreases its intensity with decreasing micro-crystal size. The experimental results are discussed with the quantum-size effect on the exciton states and on the electron-hole exchange interaction in an exciton.

The effect of grain size on the deformation twinning and de-twinning in a nanocrystalline Ni-Fe alloy was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. Specimens with different grain sizes were obtained by severely deforming an electrochemically deposited nanocrystalline Ni-20wt.% Fe alloy using high-pressure torsion, which resulted in continuous grain growth from an average grain size of ~ 21 nm in the as-deposited material to ~ 72 nm for the highest strain applied in this study. Results show that deformation de-twinning occurs at very small grain sizes while deformation twinning takes place when the grain size is larger than ~ 45 nm. The mechanism of the observed grain size effect on twinning and de-twinning is briefly discussed.

AbstractCrystal size effect is of vital importance in materials science by exerting significant influence on various properties of materials and furthermore their functions. Crystal size effect of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has never been reported because their controllable synthesis is difficult, despite their promising properties have been exhibited in many aspects. Here, we report the diverse crystal size effects of two representative COFs based on the successful realization of crystal-size-controlled synthesis. For LZU-111 with rigid spiral channels, size effect reflects in pore surface area by influencing the pore integrity, while for flexible COF-300 with straight channels, crystal size controls structural flexibility by altering the number of repeating units, which eventually changes sorption selectivity. With the understanding and insight of the structure-property correlation not only at microscale but also at mesoscale for COFs, this research will push the COF field step forward to a significant advancement in practical applications.
