High entropy alloys (HEAs) are materials of great application potential and which have been extensively studied during the last two decades. As the number of possible element combinations is enormous, model materials representing certain groups of HEAs are used for the description of microstructure, properties, and deformation mechanisms. In this study, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the so-called Cantor alloy composed of Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, and Ni in equiatomic ratios prepared by various techniques (casting, melt-spinning, spark plasma sintering) were examined. The research focused on the indentation measurements, namely, the indentation size effect describing the evolution of the hardness with penetration depth. It was found that the standard Nix–Gao model can be used for this type of alloy at higher penetration depths and its parameters correlate well with microstructural observations. The Nix–Gao model deviates from the measured data at the submicrometer range and the applied modification affords additional information on the deformation mechanism.

The pop-in effect in nanoindentation of metals represents a major collective dislocation phenomenon that displays sensitivity in the local surface microstructure and residual stresses. To understand the deformation mechanisms behind pop-ins in metals, large scale molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the pop-in behavior and indentation size effect in undeformed and deformed Cu single crystals. Tensile loading, unloading, and reloading simulations are performed to create a series of samples subjected to a broad range of tensile strains with/without pre-existing dislocations. The subsequent nanoindentation simulations are conducted to investigate the coupled effects of prestrain and the presence of resulting dislocations and surface morphology, as well as indenter size effects on the mechanical response in indentation processes. Our work provides detailed insights into the deformation mechanisms and microstructure-property relationships of nanoindentation in the presence of residual stresses and strains.

In this study, depth-sensing indentation creep response of cast and additively manufactured (laser powder bed fusion) NiTi alloys in heat-treated conditions have been investigated at ambient temperature. Indentation creep tests were evaluated with the help of a dual-stage approach comprising a loading segment with a subsequent constant load-holding stage and an unloading phase afterward. The investigation was carried out at a maximum load of 50 mN along with a holding time of 600 s. Different creep parameters comprising indentation creep displacement, creep strain rate, creep stress exponent as well as the indentation size effect have been analyzed quantitatively for the employed materials. In addition, microstructural analysis has been performed to ascertain the processing–microstructure–creep property correlations. A substantial indentation size effect was seen for both cast and printed NiTi samples in heat-treated conditions. According to the creep stress exponent measurements, the dominant mechanism of rate-dependent plastic deformation for all NiTi samples at ambient temperature is attributed to the dislocation movement (i.e., glide/climb). The outcome of this investigation will act as a framework to understand the underlying mechanisms of ambient-temperature indentation creep of the cast and printed NiTi alloy in conjunction with heat-treated conditions.
