AbstractUnderstanding human behaviour is essential to the successful adoption of new technologies, and for the promotion of safer care. This requires capturing the detail of clinical workflows to inform the design of new human–technology interactions. We are interested particularly in the possibilities for touchless technologies that can decipher human speech, gesture and motion and allow for interactions that are free of contact. Here, we employ a new approach by installing a single 360° camera into a clinical environment to analyse touch patterns and human–environment interactions across a clinical team to recommend design considerations for new technologies with the potential to reduce avoidable touch.

This requires capturing the detail of clinical workflows to inform the design of new interactions including those with touchless technologies that decipher human-speech, gesture and motion and allow for interactions that are free of contact. Many environments in hospitals are sub-optimally designed, with a poor layout of work surfaces, cumbersome equipment that requires space and effort to manoeuvre, designs that require healthcare staff to reach awkwardly and medical devices that require extensive touch. This suggests there is a need to better understand how they can be designed. Here, we employ a new approach by installing a single 360 degree camera into a clinical environment to analyse touch patterns and human-environment interactions across a clinical team to recommend design considerations for new technologies with potential to reduce avoidable touch.

Today, it is evident that we are part of a planetary trust. Conserving our planet represents a public good, global as well as local. The threats to future generations resulting from human activities make applying the normative framework of a planetary trust even more urgent than in the past decades. Initially, the planetary trust focused primarily on threats to the natural system of our human environment such as pollution and natural resource degradation, and on threats to cultural heritage. Now, we face a higher threat of nuclear war, cyber wars, and threats from gene drivers that can cause inheritable changes to genes, potential threats from other new technologies such as artificial intelligence, and possible pandemics. In this context, it is proposed that in the kaleidoscopic world, we must engage all the actors to cooperate with the shared goal of caring for and maintaining planet Earth in trust for present and future generations.

The vehicle-embedded system also known as the electronic control unit (ECU) has transformed the humble motorcar, making it more efficient, environmentally friendly, and safer, but has led to a system which is highly dependent on software. As new technologies and features are included with each new vehicle model, the increased reliance on software will no doubt continue. It is an undeniable fact that all software contains bugs, errors, and potential vulnerabilities, which when discovered must be addressed in a timely manner, primarily through patching and updates, to preserve vehicle and occupant safety and integrity. However, current automotive software updating practices are ad hoc at best and often follow the same inefficient fix mechanisms associated with a physical component failure of return or recall. Increasing vehicle connectivity heralds the potential for over the air (OtA) software updates, but rigid ECU hardware design does not often facilitate or enable OtA updating. To address the associated issues regarding automotive ECU-based software updates, a new approach in how automotive software is deployed to the ECU is required. This paper presents how lightweight virtualisation technologies known as containers can promote efficient automotive ECU software updates. ECU functional software can be deployed to a container built from an associated image. Container images promote efficiency in download size and times through layer sharing, similar to ECU difference or delta flashing. Through containers, connectivity and OtA future software updates can be completed without inconveniences to the consumer or incurring expense to the manufacturer.

Background: The integration of paediatric palliative care into the Iranian health system is essential. Aims: The aim of this study was to identify the challenges of palliative care in the paediatric intensive care unit during COVID-19 through the experiences of healthcare providers. Methods: A qualitative study with content analysis approach was conducted. Fifteen physicians and nurses were selected by purposeful sampling. The semi-structured, in-depth interviews were applied in the data collection. Findings: Ten main categories were extracted from data analysis, including ‘caring in COVID-19’, ‘communication and family centre care’, ‘breaking bad news’, palliative care training’, ‘pain and symptom management’, ‘support of the child, family and clinical team’, ‘physical environment’, ‘guidelines’, ‘specialised staff’ and ‘home based palliative care’. Conclusion: Palliative care in the PICU faces several challenges, especially during COVID-19, but the clinical team are making every attempt to improve the comprehensive care of children and their families. Telehealth is important in COVID-19, and education is also a key component to improve palliative care in the PICU in Iran.

Abstract Norwegian industries are constantly assessing new technologies and methods for more efficient and safer maintenance in the aqua cultural, renewable energy, and oil and gas industries. These Norwegian offshore industries share a common challenge: to install new equipment and transport personnel in a safe and controllable way between ships, farms and platforms. This paper deploys the Moving Frame Method (MFM) to analyze ship stability moderated by a dual gyroscopic inertial device. The MFM describes the dynamics of the system using modern mathematics. Lie group theory and Cartan’s moving frames are the foundation of this new approach to engineering dynamics. This, together with a restriction on the variation of the angular velocity used in Hamilton’s principle, enables an effective way of extracting the equations of motion. This project extends previous work. It accounts for the dual effect of two inertial disk devices, it accounts for the prescribed spin of the disks. It separates out the prescribed variables. This work displays the results in 3D on cell phones. It represents a prelude to testing in a wave tank.

This article analyzes the problems of modern education, and on the basis of this analysis, a search for a new approach to the formation of not only necessary knowledge, but also skills in the learning process is conducted. It will be about contextual, cross-contextual and existential skills, their improvement and transformation. Such skills should be developed in modern educational centers, which, in turn, should become the starting point of an individual educational route. It is the individual approach and new technologies that will help to form a personality adapted to professional activities in a rapidly changing world. The article also classifies the factors affecting the modern education system, they are divided into three main groups: social, technological and geopolitical. This classification, in turn, is used to study the strategies of innovative development of the educational system in Russia.

New technologies can upset scientific workplaces’ established practices and social order. Scientists may therefore prefer preserving skilled manual work and the social status quo to revolutionary technological change. For example, digital imaging of rock-encased fossils is a valuable way for scientists to “see” a specimen without traditional rock removal. However, interviews in vertebrate paleontology laboratories reveal workers’ skepticism toward computed tomography (CT) imaging. Scientists criticize replacing physical fossils with digital images because, they say, images are more subjective than the “real thing.” I argue that these scientists are also implicitly supporting rock-removal technicians, who are skilled and trusted experts whose work would be made obsolete by widespread implementation of CT scanning. Scientists’ view of CT as a sometimes useful tool rather than a universal new approach to accessing fossils preserves the laboratory community’s social structure. Specifically, by privileging “real” specimens and trusted specimen-processing technicians over images and imaging experts, scientists preserve the lab community’s division of labor and skill, hierarchy between scientists and technicians, and these groups’ identity and mutual trust.
