Orientational order parameter of magnetically aligned liquid crystal elastomer particles suspended in a cured silicone matrix is assessed using 2H-NMR spectroscopy. Obtained results correspond well with the composite's thermomechanical response.

Liquid crystals (LCs) are nonsolids with long-range orientational order, described by a scalar order parameter〈P2〉=12〈3cos2β−1〉. Despite the vast set of existing LC materials, one-third of the order parameter value range,−1/2< 〈P2〉 < 0, has until now been inaccessible. Here, we present the first material with negative LC order parameter in its ground state, in the form of elastomeric shells. The optical and actuation characteristics are opposite to those of conventional LC elastomers (LCEs). This novel class of anti-ordered elastomers gives access to the previously secluded range of liquid crystallinity with 〈P2〉 < 0, providing new challenges for soft matter physics and adding a complementary type of LCE actuator that is attractive for applications in, e.g., soft robotics.

ABSTRACTA theory based on an elastic model and including coupling between elastic deformation and nematic order parameter as well as an interaction between crosslinks and orientation is given. The nematic order parameter and the stress tensor have been determined on elongation and as a function of temperature as well as he anisotropy of the conformation of a side chain liquid crystal elastomer on application of a mechanical stress. A transition from a turbid, low ordered polydomain phase to a transparent, Monodomain is shown to occur.

Abstract: The 10CB liquid crystal (LC) at the higher electric field has a negative-order parameter. The 10CB LC has a definite order that maintains smectic phase stability. 10CB LC has supported the isotropic phase stability at an elevated external electric field and exhibited an unfavorable orientation of the order parameter. At the more upper electric field, the director angle (θ) fluctuated and contained θ less than 90°. The negative orientation of the order parameter and the large absorption anisotropy enhanced the optical birefringence with a reversal of sign. The negative-order parameter responsible for the IR absorbance has increased instead of reduction. The 10CB liquid crystal is a member of the cyano biphenyl series; therefore, the dipolar strength is maximum contributed to by the C-H atom asymmetric stretching of the alkyl chain length. The 10CB LC has a large bandgap (3.60 eV). Keywords: 10CB, Electric field, Electro-optical effect, Spectroscopy, Density functional theory (DFT).
