AbstractDeveloping efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction is crucial in realizing practical energy systems for sustainable fuel production and energy storage from renewable energy sources. However, the inherent linear scaling relation for most catalytic materials imposes a theoretical overpotential ceiling, limiting the development of efficient electrocatalysts. Herein, using modeled NaxMn3O7 materials, we report an effective strategy to construct better oxygen evolution electrocatalyst through tuning both lattice oxygen reactivity and scaling relation via alkali metal ion mediation. Specifically, the number of Na+ is linked with lattice oxygen reactivity, which is determined by the number of oxygen hole in oxygen lone-pair states formed by native Mn vacancies, governing the barrier symmetry between O–H bond cleavage and O–O bond formation. On the other hand, the presence of Na+ could have specific noncovalent interaction with pendant oxygen in *OOH to overcome the limitation from linear scaling relation, reducing the overpotential ceiling. Combining in situ spectroscopy-based characterization with first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that an intermediate level of Na+ mediation (NaMn3O7) exhibits the optimum oxygen evolution activity. This work provides a new rational recipe to develop highly efficient catalyst towards water oxidation or other oxidative reactions through tuning lattice oxygen reactivity and scaling relation.

The rational design and development of the low-cost and effective electrocatalysts toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are essential in the storage and conversion of clean and renewable energy sources. Herein, a ternary copper-cobalt sulfide nanosheets electrocatalysts (denoted as CuCoS/CC) for electrochemical water oxidation has been synthesized on carbon cloth (CC) via the sulfuration of CuCo-based precursors. The obtained CuCoS/CC reveals excellent electrocatalytic performance toward OER in 1.0 M KOH. It exhibits a particularly low overpotential of 276 mV at current density of 10 mA cm−2, and a small Tafel slope (58 mV decade−1), which is superior to the current commercialized noble-metal electrocatalysts, such as IrO2. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of Cu and Co atoms and sulfidation, electrons transport and ions diffusion are significantly enhanced with the increase of active sites, thus the kinetic process of OER reaction is boosted. Our studies will serve as guidelines in the innovative design of non-noble metal electrocatalysts and their application in electrochemical water splitting

In the process of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on perovskite, it is of great significance to accelerate the hindered lattice oxygen oxidation process to promote the slow kinetics of water oxidation. In this paper, a facile surface modification strategy of nanometer-scale iron oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) clusters depositing on the surface of LaNiO3 (LNO) perovskite is reported, and it can obviously promote hydroxyl adsorption and weaken Ni-O bond of LNO. The above relevant evidences are well demonstrated by the experimental results and DFT calculations. The excellent hydroxyl adsorption ability of FeOOH-LaNiO3 (Fe-LNO) can obviously optimize OH- filling barriers to promote lattice oxygen-participated OER (LOER), and the weakened Ni-O bond of LNO perovskite can obviously reduce the reaction barrier of the lattice oxygen participation mechanism (LOM). Based on the above synergistic catalysis effect, the Fe-LNO catalyst exhibits a maximum factor of 5 catalytic activity increases for OER relative to the pristine perovskite and demonstrates the fast reaction kinetics (low Tafel slope of 42 mV dec-1) and superior intrinsic activity (TOFs of ~40 O2 S-1 at 1.60 V vs. RHE).
