AbstractThe mosquito Anopheles gambiae is a major African malaria vector, transmitting parasites responsible for significant mortality and disease burden. Although flight acoustics are essential to mosquito mating and present promising alternatives to insecticide-based vector control strategies, there is limited data on mosquito flight tones during swarming. Here, for the first time, we present detailed analyses of free-flying male and female An. gambiae flight tones and their harmonization (harmonic convergence) over a complete swarm sequence. Audio analysis of single-sex swarms showed synchronized elevation of male and female flight tones during swarming. Analysis of mixed-sex swarms revealed additional 50 Hz increases in male and female flight tones due to mating activity. Furthermore, harmonic differences between male and female swarm tones in mixed-sex swarms and in single-sex male swarms with artificial female swarm audio playback indicate that frequency differences of approximately 50 Hz or less at the male second and female third harmonics (M2:F3) are maintained both before and during mating interactions. This harmonization likely coordinates male scramble competition by maintaining ideal acoustic recognition within mating pairs while acoustically masking phonotactic responses of nearby swarming males to mating females. These findings advance our knowledge of mosquito swarm acoustics and provide vital information for reproductive control strategies.

Malaria declines have stagnated recently due to widespread insecticide resistance among vector populations. Flight acoustics are essential to mosquito mating biology and represent promising alternative targets for mosquito control. However, mosquito swarm acoustics data are limited. Here, for the first time, we present detailed analyses of free-flying male and female An. gambiae flight tones and their harmonization (harmonic convergence) over a complete swarm sequence. Audio analysis of single-sex swarms showed elevated male or female flight tone frequencies and amplitudes during swarming flight with gradual declines to pre-swarm levels over an approximately 35-min period. Analysis of mixed-sex swarms revealed additional increases in flight tone frequencies and amplitudes due to mating activity. Data from mixed-sex swarms suggest harmonic convergence during swarming enhances the efficiency of female detection by synchronizing male and female baseline swarm tones. Further, data from experiments using female swarm tone playbacks to males indicate that harmonic convergence during mating interactions coordinates male scramble competition by acoustically masking mating couple flight tones. These findings advance our knowledge of mosquito swarm acoustics, providing vital information for reproductive control strategies.

SUMMARYChanges during development in the elemental contents (Ca, P, K, Mg and S) of male and femaleSchistosoma mansonifrom both mixed and single sex infections have been measured for the first time. In mixed infections, there is a significant difference between the calcium content of male and female worms; female worms having between 2 and 3 times more calcium. In mature female worms from mixed infections, after an initial rise in the calcium content corresponding to the time when vitelline development occurs, the amount of calcium ranged from 0.36 to 0.65 mg/g dry wt, whereas the amounts in similarly aged male worms ranged between 0.19 and 0.32 mg/g dry wt. While the type of infection does not affect the calcium content of male worms, a significant difference in the calcium levels in female worms from mixed and single sex infections was found. The amount of calcium in females from single sex infections ranged from 0.21 to 0.39 mg/g dry wt and this is considerably less than the levels recorded in females from mixed infections. This difference in calcium content between mixed and single sex infections can be related to the differences in degree of development of the vitelline gland in the two types of female worm. The amounts of phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and sulphur in both male and female worms from both single and mixed infections are similar, although females from mixed infections contained slightly more phosphorus than either females from single sex infections or either type of male worm.

Three species of the genus Wockia Heinemann, 1870, which are so far known in Russia are reviewed; their male and female genitalia are illustrated, and a key for identification is provided. Two species, W. koreana Sohn, 2008, and W. magna Sohn, 2014, which were recently described from East Asia, are for the first time reported from Russia. The investigation of the holotype of W. funebrella Heinemann, 1870, discovered in the collection of the Zoological Institute RAS (St Petersburg), confirmed that this species is a junior subjective synonym of W. asperipunctella (Bruand, 1851). The distribution of Palaearctic species of the genus is discussed shortly.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonosis that is prevalent worldwide. It is considered endemic in Portugal but few studies have been performed on Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato and their hosts. In this study, CE cysts are reported for the first time in a free-living wild boar (Sus scrofa) in Portugal. The presence of the metacestodes in the liver of the wild boar was identified by morphological features, microscopic examination and molecular analysis. The sequencing of part of the DNA nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer-1 (ITS-1) region revealed a G5 genotype that presently corresponds to Echinococcus ortleppi. This is the first report of E. ortleppi in Portugal and to the best of the authors’ knowledge, in Europe. These results suggest that wild boar may be a host of CE, namely, crossing the livestock–wildlife interface, which has important public health implications. Wildlife reservoirs must be taken into account as CE hosts and surveillance of game as well as health education for hunters should be implemented using a One Health approach, with implementation of feasible and tailor-made control strategies, namely, proper elimination of byproducts in the field.

The genus Pholcus Walckenaer, 1805 is reported from Pakistan for the first time. Two new species of the Pholcus nenjukovi species-group are described: Pholcus hamuchal Yao & Li sp. nov. (Gilgit Baltistan, male and female) and Pholcus kalam Yao & Li sp. nov. (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, male and female). Type material is deposited in the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IZCAS) in Beijing, China.
