AbstractResults are presented for real-time seismic imaging of subsurface fluid flow by parsimonious refraction and surface-wave interferometry. Each subsurface velocity image inverted from time-lapse seismic data only requires several minutes of recording time, which is less than the time-scale of the fluid-induced changes in the rock properties. In this sense this is real-time imaging. The images are P-velocity tomograms inverted from the first-arrival times and the S-velocity tomograms inverted from dispersion curves. Compared to conventional seismic imaging, parsimonious interferometry reduces the recording time and increases the temporal resolution of time-lapse seismic images by more than an order-of-magnitude. In our seismic experiment, we recorded 90 sparse data sets over 4.5 h while injecting 12-tons of water into a sand dune. Results show that the percolation of water is mostly along layered boundaries down to a depth of a few meters, which is consistent with our 3D computational fluid flow simulations and laboratory experiments. The significance of parsimonious interferometry is that it provides more than an order-of-magnitude increase of temporal resolution in time-lapse seismic imaging. We believe that real-time seismic imaging will have important applications for non-destructive characterization in environmental, biomedical, and subsurface imaging.

<p>Hekla is one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes having had 18 summit eruptions in the last 1,100 years with the most recent eruption in 2000. Hekla volcano has been studied extensively using various geodetic methods. Most recent deformation studies (InSAR) in relation to the 2000 eruption of Hekla have addressed the proposed location of a deep-seated magma reservoir at approximately 10 km (Sturkell et al., 2013) where other studies indicate a greater depth (Ofeigsson et al., 2011). A regional-scale magnetotelluric (MT) survey (Eysteinsson and Hermance 1985) conducted in 1982 suggested the estimated depths for the magma chamber beneath the volcano to be between 5 and 24 km. Our new project MTHEK (MagnetoTelluric Assessment of the HEKla Volcano) aims at identifying low-resistivity zones at depth, which may be a proxy for melt accumulation and migration pathways, and may constrain the location of the proposed magma reservoir. The geoelectrical models obtained will enable us to highlight potential real-time electromagnetic monitoring locations which may complement the current real-time seismic/deformation monitoring.</p><p>In September 2020, broadband MT data were acquired at 20 stations around and to the south of Hekla volcano. The horizontal electric field components were recorded using 50-60 m dipoles, and the three components of the magnetic field were measured using induction coils. At most stations, the recording time was approximately 20 hours, and a distant remote reference site (approximately 100 km away) was recording during the whole survey. The period range of good quality data obtained is about 300 Hz to 1,000 - 2,000 s. In addition, at 17 MT stations central loop transient electromagnetic (TEM) data were collected using a transmitter loop of 200 m × 200 m and a 1 m<sup>2</sup> receiver loop with 100 windings (effective area 100 m<sup>2</sup>). The TEM data are used to correct the MT data for static shift effects caused by near surface inhomogeneities or steep topography. State of the art data processing and analysis methods are being applied to the data. Preliminary inversion models will be presented and provide a first idea of the resistivity structure of the volcano.</p>

If seismic imaging is formulated in terms of two focusing steps—focusing in emission and focusing in detection (or vice versa)—the output of the first focusing step yields a new type of seismic gather, the common‐focus‐point (CFP) gather, which is available for data analysis and information extraction. One important consequence of this novel option is that the involved focusing operators can be updated without updating the underlying velocity model. Introducing the concept of “dynamic focusing,” it is proposed to verify the validity of focusing operators by comparing the “gather of focus‐point responses” with the “gather of focusing operators.” Compared with velocity‐driven time and depth migration, operator‐driven CFP migration can be considered as the most general approach to seismic imaging: it does not require a velocity model, and it automatically takes into account unknown complex propagation effects such as conversion, anisotropy, and dispersion. In addition, in CFP migration, the second focusing step can be extended to produce both angle‐averaged reflection information and angle‐dependent reflection information. The CFP approach to seismic migration allows new solutions in the situation of complex near‐surface layers, subsalt targets, multicomponent processing, and time lapse analysis.

SUMMARY We conducted stress–strain oscillation experiments on dry and partially oil-saturated Fontainebleau sandstone samples over the 1–2000 Hz band at different confining pressures to investigate the wave-induced fluid flow (WIFF) at mesoscopic and microscopic scales and their interaction. Three tested rock samples have similar porosity between 6 and 7 per cent and were partially saturated to different degrees with different oils. The measurement results exhibit a single or two attenuation peaks that are affected by the saturation degree, oil viscosity and confining pressure. One peak, exhibited by all samples, shifts to lower frequencies with increasing pressure, and is mainly attributed to grain contact- or microcrack-related squirt flow based on modelling of its characteristics and comparison with other experiment results for sandstones. The other peak is present at smaller frequencies and shifts to higher frequencies as the confining pressure increases, showing an opposite pressure dependence. This contrast is interpreted as the result of fluid flow patterns at different scales. We developed a dual-scale fluid flow model by incorporating the squirt flow effect into the patchy saturation model, which accounts for the interaction of WIFFs at microscopic and mesoscopic scales. This model provides a reasonable interpretation of the measurement results. Our broad-frequency-band measurements give physical evidence of WIFFs co-existing at two different scales, and combining with modelling results, it suggests that the WIFF mechanisms, related to pore microstructure and fluid distribution, interplay with each other and jointly control seismic attenuation and dispersion at reservoir conditions. These observations and modelling results are useful for quantitative seismic interpretation and reservoir characterization, specifically they have potential applications in time-lapse seismic analysis, fluid prediction and reservoir monitoring.

Summary The 2016–17 central Italy earthquake sequence began with the first mainshock near the town of Amatrice on August 24 (MW 6.0), and was followed by two subsequent large events near Visso on October 26 (MW 5.9) and Norcia on October 30 (MW 6.5), plus a cluster of 4 events with MW > 5.0 within few hours on January 18, 2017. The affected area had been monitored before the sequence started by the permanent Italian National Seismic Network (RSNC), and was enhanced during the sequence by temporary stations deployed by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology and the British Geological Survey. By the middle of September, there was a dense network of 155 stations, with a mean separation in the epicentral area of 6–10 km, comparable to the most likely earthquake depth range in the region. This network configuration was kept stable for an entire year, producing 2.5 TB of continuous waveform recordings. Here we describe how this data was used to develop a large and comprehensive earthquake catalogue using the Complete Automatic Seismic Processor (CASP) procedure. This procedure detected more than 450,000 events in the year following the first mainshock, and determined their phase arrival times through an advanced picker engine (RSNI-Picker2), producing a set of about 7 million P- and 10 million S-wave arrival times. These were then used to locate the events using a non-linear location (NLL) algorithm, a 1D velocity model calibrated for the area, and station corrections and then to compute their local magnitudes (ML). The procedure was validated by comparison of the derived data for phase picks and earthquake parameters with a handpicked reference catalogue (hereinafter referred to as ‘RefCat’). The automated procedure takes less than 12 hours on an Intel Core-i7 workstation to analyse the primary waveform data and to detect and locate 3000 events on the most seismically active day of the sequence. This proves the concept that the CASP algorithm can provide effectively real-time data for input into daily operational earthquake forecasts, The results show that there have been significant improvements compared to RefCat obtained in the same period using manual phase picks. The number of detected and located events is higher (from 84,401 to 450,000), the magnitude of completeness is lower (from ML 1.4 to 0.6), and also the number of phase picks is greater with an average number of 72 picked arrival for a ML = 1.4 compared with 30 phases for RefCat using manual phase picking. These propagate into formal uncertainties of ± 0.9km in epicentral location and ± 1.5km in depth for the enhanced catalogue for the vast majority of the events. Together, these provide a significant improvement in the resolution of fine structures such as local planar structures and clusters, in particular the identification of shallow events occurring in parts of the crust previously thought to be inactive. The lower completeness magnitude provides a rich data set for development and testing of analysis techniques of seismic sequences evolution, including real-time, operational monitoring of b-value, time-dependent hazard evaluation and aftershock forecasting.

ABSTRACT This paper describes an analysis of the NuSTAR data of the fastest-rotating magnetar 1E 1547 − 5408, acquired in 2016 April for a time lapse of 151 ks. The source was detected with a 1–60 keV flux of 1.7 × 10−11 erg s−1 cm−2, and its pulsation at a period of 2.086710(5) s. In 8–25 keV, the pulses were phase-modulated with a period of T = 36.0 ± 2.3 ks, and an amplitude of ∼0.2 s. This reconfirms the Suzaku discovery of the same effect at $T=36.0 ^{+4.5}_{-2.5}$ ks, made in the 2009 outburst. These results strengthen the view derived from the Suzaku data, that this magnetar performs free precession as a result of its axial deformation by ∼0.6 × 10−4, possibly caused by internal toroidal magneti fields (MFs) reaching ∼1016 G. Like in the Suzaku case, the modulation was not detected in energies below ∼8 keV. Above 10 keV, the pulse-phase behaviour, including the 36 ks modulation parameters, exhibited complex energy dependencies: at ∼22 keV, the modulation amplitude increased to ∼0.5 s, and the modulation phase changed by ∼65° over 10–27 keV, followed by a phase reversal. Although the pulse significance and pulsed fraction were originally very low in >10 keV, they both increased noticeably, when the arrival times of individual photons were corrected for these systematic pulse-phase variations. Possible origins of these complex phenomena are discussed, in terms of several physical processes that are specific to ultrastrong MFs.

The Lunar Penetrating Radar (LPR) onboard the Yutu-2 rover from China’s Chang’E-4 (CE-4) mission is used to probe the subsurface structure and the near-surface stratigraphic structure of the lunar regolith on the farside of the Moon. Structural analysis of regolith could provide abundant information on the formation and evolution of the Moon, in which the rock location and property analysis are the key procedures during the interpretation of LPR data. The subsurface velocity of electromagnetic waves is a vital parameter for stratigraphic division, rock location estimates, and calculating the rock properties in the interpretation of LPR data. In this paper, we propose a procedure that combines the regolith rock extraction technique based on local correlation between the two sets of LPR high-frequency channel data and the common offset semblance analysis to determine the velocity from LPR diffraction hyperbola. We consider the heterogeneity of the regolith and derive the relative permittivity distribution based on the rock extraction and semblance analysis. The numerical simulation results show that the procedure is able to obtain the high-precision position and properties of the rock. Furthermore, we apply this procedure to CE-4 LPR data and obtain preferable estimations of the rock locations and the properties of the lunar subsurface regolith.
