AbstractWe report a systematic theoretical and experimental investigation on the electronic transport evolution in metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes thin films enriched by gold nanocrystals. We used an ultra-clean production method of both types of single-walled carbon nanotube thin films with/without gold nanocrystals, which were uniformly dispersed in the whole volume of the thin films, causing a modification of the doping level of the films (verified by Raman spectroscopy). We propose a modification of the electronic transport model with the additional high-temperature features that allow us to interpret the transport within a broader temperature range and that are related to the conductivity type of carbon nanotubes. Moreover, we demonstrate, that the proposed model is also working for thin films with the addition of gold nanocrystals, and only a change of the conductivity level of our samples is observed caused by modification of potential barriers between carbon nanotubes. We also find unusual behavior of doped metallic carbon nanotube thin film, which lowers its conductivity due to doping.

An angular velocity of flow sensor for liquids based on single-walled carbon nanotube thin films is presented. The carbon nanotubes in this study were fabricated on Si substrate by hot filament chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The experimental results showed that the flow-induced current on the surface of carbon nanotube thin films was closely depended upon the angular velocity, concentration, properties and temperature of the liquids. The current increased with increasing angular velocity, concentration and temperature of the liquids. In this study, the liquids such as water, NaCl solution and other electrolyte were flowing over the sensor. The results obtained were also discussed. The theoretical and experimental studies have shown that there was electronic friction and electron drag effect of carbon nanotubes in flowing liquids. This effect in carbon nanotubes can be used for a new flow sensor.

Using density-functional theory (DFT) combined with non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF), we have investigated the transport properties of carbon nanotubes with S–S, M–S, and M–M heterojunctions. The results show that the local states associated with topological defects arise at the junctions. The position and width of local states strongly depend on the configurations of the topological defects and their arrangement. The (7, 0)–(8, 0) and (8, 0)–(9, 0) heterojunctions present semiconducting characteristics. The (6, 0)–(9, 0) heterojunction maintains metallic properties. However, the 5/6/6/7 defects in the nanostructure decrease the electronic transport. More importantly, our results indicate that the I–V characteristics of the heterojunctions could be effectively controlled by gate voltage.

AbstractSingle-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) were functionalized with 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid via “direct” Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction in PPA/P2O5 to afford ortho-diamino-functionalized SWCNT (DIF-SWCNT) and MWCNT (DIF-MWCNT). The resultant DIF-SWCNT and DIF-MWCNT showed improved solubility and dispersibility. To improve interfacial adhesion between CNT and polymer matrix, the grafting of ABPBI onto the surface of DIF-SWCNT (10 wt%) or DIF-MWCNT (10 wt%) was conducted by simple in-situ polymerization of AB monomer, 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid dihydrochloride, in PPA. The resultant ABPBI-g-MWCNT and ABPBI-g-SWCNT showed improved the mechanical and electrical properties.
