AbstractThe transport of motile microorganisms is strongly influenced by fluid flows that are ubiquitous in biological environments. Here we demonstrate the impact of fluid inertia. We analyze the dynamics of a microswimmer in pressure-driven Poiseuille flow, where fluid inertia is small but non-negligible. Using perturbation theory and the reciprocal theorem, we show that in addition to the classical inertial lift of passive particles, the active nature generates a ‘swimming lift’, which we evaluate for neutral and pusher/puller-type swimmers. Accounting for fluid inertia engenders a rich spectrum of complex dynamics including bistable states, where tumbling coexists with stable centerline swimming or swinging. The dynamics is sensitive to the swimmer’s hydrodynamic signature and goes well beyond the findings at vanishing fluid inertia. Our work will have non-trivial implications on the transport and dispersion of active suspensions in microchannels.

The work is an evaluation of consumerism activities in Nigeria with specific interest in the food and drink industries. It considered the growth and challenges to consumerism, the impact of the non-active nature of consumerism on the health and environmental standard of the country. Data generated based on the use of sets questionnaire were analyzed using analysis of variance statistical tool. Findings include that the inactive nature of consumerism in Nigeria contributes significantly to the exploitative attitude of manufacturers, explicitly through high price of products and implicitly by the debasement of the environment through improper management of residues (waste), resulting to poor health and environmental standard. Solution among others is that firms by suasion should be encouraged to adopt marketing concept philosophies, principles, policies and strategies for the maximization of corporate goal, consumer welfare (satisfaction) and macro economic development of the society.

AbstractIn recent years, there has been a growing scholarly interest in how International Relations theory can contribute to our understanding of the impact of technology on global politics, underpinned mainly by an engagement with Science and Technology Studies (STS). However, less attention has been paid to the ways in which international society shapes technology. Building on sociological and historical studies of science and technology, this article outlines one way through which international society has constituted technology by developing a synthetic account of the emergence of technological advancement as a ‘standard of civilisation’ in the nineteenth century that differentiated the ‘society of civilised states’ from non-European societies, with a particular focus on China and India. In doing so, this article also highlights how this process has had a powerful and enduring influence on Chinese and Indian conceptions about science and technology. Thus, by shifting the focus from how technology shapes global politics to how international society shapes technology, this article provides new insights into the relationship between technology, power, and modernity in an interdisciplinary context. It also offers a new way of thinking about the complex dynamics of today's global politics of technology.

Through generalizing the method of a decay analysis technique determining the interior solution developed by Gregory and Wan, a set of necessary conditions on the end-data of torsional circular shaft in two-dimensional dodecagonal quasicrystals (2D dodecagonal QCs) for the existence of a rapidly decaying solution is established. By accurate solutions for auxiliary regular state, using the reciprocal theorem, these necessary conditions for the end-data to induce only a decaying elastostatic state (boundary layer solution) will be translated into appropriate boundary conditions for the torsional circular shaft in 2D dodecagonal QCs. The results of the present paper enable us to establish a set of boundary conditions.

A three-dimensional elastic-plastic contact code based on semi-analytical method is presented and validated. The contact is solved within a Hertz framework. The reciprocal theorem with initial strains is then introduced, to express the surface geometry as a function of contact pressure and plastic strains. The irreversible nature of plasticity leads to an incremental formulation of the elastic-plastic contact problem, and an algorithm to solve this problem is set up. Closed form expression, which give residual stresses and surface displacements from plastic strains, are obtained by integration of the reciprocal theorem. The resolution of the elastic-plastic contact using the finite element (FE) method is discussed, and the semi-analytical code presented in this paper is validated by comparing results with experimental data from the nano-indentation test. Finally, the resolution of the rolling elastic-plastic contact is presented for smooth and dented surfaces and for a vertical or rolling loading. The main advantage of this code over classical FE codes is that the calculation time makes the transient analysis of three-dimensional contact problems affordable, including when a fine mesh is required.

The impact of inaccurate demand beliefs on dynamics of a Triopoly game is studied. We suppose that all the players make their own estimations on possible demand with errors. A dynamic Triopoly game with such demand belief is set up. Based on this model, existence and local stable region of the equilibriums are investigated by 3D stable regions of Nash equilibrium point. The complex dynamics, such as bifurcation scenarios and route to chaos, are displayed in 2D bifurcation diagrams, in which e1 and α are negatively related to each other. Basins of attraction are investigated and we found that the attraction domain becomes smaller with the increase in price modification speed, which indicates that all the players’ output must be kept within a certain range so as to keep the system stable. Feedback control method is used to keep the system at an equilibrium state.

Using the analogy between the inelastic strain gradient and applied body force, the reciprocal theorem for displacement in inelastic bodies is derived. The application of this theorem to find the deflection or slope at a particular point due to given in elastic strain distribution in the body is given. Using this theorem, the coincidence of yield surfaces with plastic potential is derived. This theorem may be applied to solid bodies of both homogeneous and composite materials.

We investigate the impact of contact structure clustering on the dynamics of multiple diseases interacting through coinfection of a single individual, two problems typically studied independently. We highlight how clustering, which is well known to hinder propagation of diseases, can actually speed up epidemic propagation in the context of synergistic coinfections if the strength of the coupling matches that of the clustering. We also show that such dynamics lead to a first-order transition in endemic states, where small changes in transmissibility of the diseases can lead to explosive outbreaks and regions where these explosive outbreaks can only happen on clustered networks. We develop a mean-field model of coinfection of two diseases following susceptible-infectious-susceptible dynamics, which is allowed to interact on a general class of modular networks. We also introduce a criterion based on tertiary infections that yields precise analytical estimates of when clustering will lead to faster propagation than nonclustered networks. Our results carry importance for epidemiology, mathematical modeling, and the propagation of interacting phenomena in general. We make a call for more detailed epidemiological data of interacting coinfections.
