Synthesis of metal-semiconductor heterostructures may allow the combination of function of the corresponding components and/or the enhanced performance resulting from the interactions between all the components. In this paper, Au@Cu2Ocore-shell heterostructures are prepared by a seed-growth method, using different-shaped Au nanocrystals as the seeds such as nanorods, octahedra, decahedra, dots, and nanocubes. The results revealed that the final structure of Au@Cu2Owas greatly influenced by the shape of the seeds used. Exposure of Cu2O{111}and Cu2O{001}favored when the overgrowth happened on Au{111}and Au{001}surface, respectively. The size of the product can also be tuned by the amount of the seeds. The results reported here provide a thinking clue to modulate the shape and size of core-shell nanocrystals, which is useful in developing new materials with desired performance.

CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) with different morphologies have been synthesized and applied as the acceptor in the active layer of the organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices. CdSe tetrapod (TP)/nanorod (NR) with zinc-blended seeds and wurtzite arms is prepared by seed growth method and mixed with poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT): [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). When the concentrations of CdSe in P3HT: PCBM system are 50 wt% optimally, the efficiency can be promoted about 4.3%, suggesting that an enhancement of 13.2% can be obtained and the addition of anisotropic CdSe NCs content in the active layer can be beneficial for the transport of electrons and light absorption in the OPV devices.

Magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) decorated with gold nanostars (AuNSs) have been prepared by using a seed growth method without the addition of surfactants or colloidal stabilizers. The hybrid nanomaterials were investigated as adsorbents for the uptake of tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solutions and subsequent detection using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Several parameters were investigated in order to optimize the performance of these hybrid platforms on the uptake and SERS detection of TC, including variable pH values and the effect of contact time on the removal of TC. The spatial distribution of TC and AuNS on the hybrid composites was accomplished by coupling SERS analysis with Raman imaging studies, allowing also for the determination of the detection limit for TC when dissolved in ultrapure water (10 nM) and in more complex aqueous matrices (1 μM). Attempts were also made to investigate the adsorption modes of the TC molecules at the surface of the metal NPs by taking into account the enhancement of the Raman bands in these different matrices.

Nanoheaters are promising tools for localized photothermal therapy (PTT) of malignant cells. The anisotropic AuNPs present tunable surface plasmon resonances (SPR) with ideal NIR optical response to be applied as theranostic agents. To this purpose, nanoparticles with branches are suitable because of the electromagnetic field concentrated at their vertices. We standardized a protocol to synthesize multibranched gold nanoparticles (MB-AuNPs) by the seed-growth method and found a size-seed dependence tunability on the hierarchy of branching. Once the optical response is evaluated, we tested the temporal stability as nanoheaters of the MB-AuNPs immersed in skin-equivalent phantoms by dynamic infrared thermography (DIRT). The most suited sample presents a concentration of 5.2×108 MB-AuNPs/mL showing good thermal stability with ΔT = 4.5°C, during 3 cycles of 10 min at 785 nm laser irradiation with power of 0.15 W. According to these results, the MB-AuNPs are suitable nanoheaters to be tested for PTT in more complex models.

The problem being faced is that the current target recognition method based on color feature can’t filter objects that have the same color as the target object. In this paper, a new target recognition algorithm based on the object’s color and size is introduced. To achieve the goal of object recognition, the HSV color space conversion, the threshold method and seed growth method are used together to implement image segmentation. The size feature has been used to filter the image regions that have been extracted by image segmentation. The method is proved by experimentation to be effective in regular shape object recognition.

Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were loaded into poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) based temperature responsive microgels by seed-growth method. Their growth process was tracked by their extinction spectra at various reaction times. Their average diameter measured by field emission transmission electron microscopy is 12 nm, and their weight content by thermogravimetric analysis is 29.2%. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) property of the loaded Au NPs changes remarkably within the same temperature range as the particle size of the hybrid microgels varys, due to variation of the refractive index surrounding the Au NPs and plasmonic coupling between them. This result indicates that the LSPR property of the Au NPs embedded within temperature responsive microgels can be tuned by environmental temperature.
