Abstract The effect of various salt coatings, metals, and carrier gases was investigated in an attempt to improve the Giuffrida thermionic detector for residues of phosphorus-containing pesticides. As reported recently hy Giuffrida et al., the highest sensitivity to phosphorus (with insignificant response to halogen) was obtained with a potassium chloride coating. The use of helium as the carrier gas produced an 8-fold enhancement in response to phosphorus over that obtained with nitrogen, and the response to halogen remained nil. Substrate interference was very low with the KCI detector and helium carrier gas, and analyses were possible at the subnanogram level

Halothane or CCl4 was co-administered with the spin trap N-tert-butyl-alpha-(4-nitrophenyl)nitrone (PBN) to rats fitted with bile duct cannuli or to isolated perfused liver preparations. Rats maintained under halothane anaesthesia generated significant amounts of free radicals, and 5-9 nmol was excreted in bile over 1 h. No adducts were detected in urine or plasma. The hepatic origin of these free radicals was confirmed by studies on isolated perfused livers where the addition of halothane to the perfusate resulted in the biliary elimination of the same PBN-trapped radical adducts. Similarly, following CCl4 administration, the same radical species were eliminated in bile in the whole animal and the perfused liver preparation. In the perfused liver, over 3 h the total biliary elimination of radicals derived from halothane or CCl4 (administered at equimolar concentrations) was approximately the same (5-7 nmol); however, the elimination of halothane-derived radicals was more rapid over the first 1 h.

AbstractRapid solidification, sputtering and electroless chemical deposition have been used to produce amorphous metal alloys which possess excellent corrosion and abrasion resistance. This paper discusses a new technique for obtaining amorphous metal alloy coatings. This technique consists of dissociating mixtures of organometallics (metal carbonyls) and metalloid hydrides in a hydrogen carrier gas using a radio-frequency discharge. In particular, the formation of Ni-P alloys is discussed.Plasma decomposition of Ni(CO)4 and PH3 in argon and hydrogen carrier gases [Ni(CO) 4/PH3˜8/l] yielded films that were black and silver, respectively, in appearance. Both films were amorphous as determined by transmission electron microscopy. Films deposited using a hydroqen carrier gas were three orders of magnitude more conductive than those deposited using an argon carrier gas. Analysis of both films using electron microprohe analysis and inductively-coupled plasma spectroscony showed an enrichment of P in the films over the P content in the plasma qas mixtures. Reducinq the P content of the plasma gas mixture [Ni(CO)4/PH3˜17/Il yielded crystalline films with no P enrichment. The grain size in these films was ˜Å as determined by x-ray line-broadeninq.Using Auger electron spectroscopy, films deposited using hydroqen and argon carrier gases were determined to have, in addition to Ni and P, small amounts of carbon (8–12 at%) and oxygen (1–4 at%). Infrared spectra of both crystalline and amorphous films showed chemisorhed CO.

AbstractAn examination of thermal chemical vapor deposit elemental composition by EDAX has been completed for material films grown from Cu(acac)2 and Cu(tmhd)2 (acac = pentane-2,4-dionate; tmhd = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dionate), using both hydrous and anhydrous carrier gas steams each of reducing (H2), inert (H2), and oxidizing (O2) composition.
