In this paper, highly crystalline YF 3: Yb 3+/ Ln 3+( Ln = Er 3+, Tm 3+) microsheets were successfully synthesized by a surfactant-free molten salt method for the first time. The results indicated that the as-obtained samples belonged to orthorhombic system and exhibited microsheets morphology with side lengths of 30 to 80 μm and wall thickness from 1 to 1.5 μm. By changing the dopant's species ( Ln 3+), multicolor (yellow and blue) upconversion emission can be observed in YF 3: Yb 3+/ Ln 3+ microsheets under 980 nm laser diode (LD) excitation. The upconversion mechanisms in co-doping YF 3 samples were analyzed in detail based on the emission spectra. Importantly, this approach not only proposes a new alternative in synthesizing such materials, but also opens the possibility to meet the increasing commercial demand.

Submicron-sized (~200 nm) aluminium boron carbide (Al8B4C7) particles were synthesised from Al, B4C and carbon black raw materials in a molten NaCl-based salt at a relatively low temperature. The effects of the salt type/assembly and the firing temperature on the synthesis process were examined, and the relevant reaction mechanisms discussed. The molten salt played an important role in the Al8B4C7 formation process. By using a combined salt of 95%NaCl + 5%NaF, an effective liquid reaction medium was formed, greatly facilitating the Al8B4C7 formation. As a result, essentially phase-pure Al8B4C7 was obtained after 6 h of firing at 1250 °C. This temperature was 350–550 °C lower than that required by the conventional direct reaction and thermal reduction methods.

CCTO powders were prepared by using molten salt method in the NaCl-KCl system. The effects of temperature and holding time on phase compositions, particle morphology and size have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and laser particle size analyzer. Using CaCO3, CuO and TiO2 as starting materials, CCTO compound could be synthesized at any temperature from 800oC to 1000oC in the NaCl-KCl system. The average particle size increased obviously with the increasing of temperature above 850 oC. Holding time had great effect on grain size and morphology.

Mullite whisker was prepared at low temperature via non-hydrolytic sol-gel (NHSG) process combined with molten salt method. The influence of heat treatment temperature was studied on the morphology and the microstructure of whisker, and its growth mechanism was also described. The results show that the mullite whisker appears at the lowest temperature of 750 °C, and optimized mullite whisker can be prepared at 850 °C with the growth direction of [00, whose diameter is in the range of 170~300 nm with the aspect ratio of >30.

Alkaline earth titanates and zirconates and their binary systems are of interest for their temperature in sensitive dielectric properties. Calcium titanate and calcium zirconate perovskite ceramics find applications in pulse discharge, energy storage and microwave capacitors. These dielectric materials have been used in electric hybrid and fuel cell vehicles. In the present work, fine crystalline compound powders of calcium titanate and calcium zirconate were prepared by a single step molten salt synthesis. Calcium oxide and titanium dioxide/zirconium oxide were used as precursors to obtain the calcium titanate and calcium zirconate compound powders respectively. The prepared calcium titanate and calcium zirconate compound powders were characterized by TGA, FTIR, XRD, SEM and EDS analysis.
