The use of cascade heat pumps for hot water generation has gained much attention in recent times. The big question that has attracted much research interest is how to enhance the performance and energy saving potential of these cascade heat pumps. This study therefore proposed a new cycle to enhance performance of the cascade heat pump by adopting an auxiliary heat exchanger (AHX) in desuperheater, heater and parallel positions at the low stage (LS) side. The new cascade cycle with AHX in desuperheater position was found to have better performance than that with AHX at heater and parallel positions. Compared to the conventional cycle, heating capacity and coefficient of performance (COP) of the new cascade cycle with AHX in desuperheater position increased up to 7.4% and 14.9% respectively.

The work is devoted to centralized heat supply systems based on CHP plants and the use with them heat pumps (HP) on carbon dioxide as refrigerant. Heat pumps are used in heat supply systems for buildings and use the heat of the outside air and, at the same time, the heat of the return network water (WWR) as a source of low-grade heat (LHP). The aim of the study is to develop a structural diagram of such a heat pump, where the outside air is heated by a heat exchanger installed in the return water line of the heating system, to develop a hydraulic circuit of a heat pump taking into account the law of regulation of the building heating system, to develop an algorithm for controlling the operating modes of the so-called balancing heat exchanger installed after gas cooler and internal heat exchanger of the heat pump. The most significant results were the hydraulic circuit of the heat pump, the aerodynamic circuit of the air supply path to the heat pump evaporator, the balancing heat exchanger control system, taking into account the requirement to ensure the operation of the control valve in a single-phase flow. The significance of the results obtained consisted in obtaining the dependences between the CO temperature graph and the parameters of the thermodynamic cycle of the heat pump, which ensured the operation of the control valve of the heat pump in a single-phase environment.

In this paper, a novel type of ground heat exchanger for geothermal applications is introduced. This heat exchanger is installed in the foundations of a commercial and residential building that has piles and diaphragm walls. This dramatically reduces the cost of the ground heat exchanger and makes the application more cost efficient with a payback period of 1–2 years compared to 10 years with the conventional vertical loops. The system will be detailed and its basic operation will be explained. In addition, test results of an in-situ thermal test response of a loop that is already installed in a foundation of a building in Beirut, Lebanon will also be presented. This test allows the approximation of the thermal conductivity of the ground and the amount of heat that is absorbed and extracted from and to the ground. The preliminary tests have given very promising results, since the ground is water dense and has a high thermal conductivity which increases the heat transfer between our heat exchanger installed in the foundation and the ground. In addition, in the current application, and around the foundation, there exists a lot of circulating water. This renders the application more and more efficient since the ground temperature will not fluctuate in the next 10 years.

Abstract This paper presents a numerical study on the influence of internal heat exchanger (IHX) exchanging surface in the performance of a transcritical CO2 heat pump water heater at different operating conditions. Five different IHX geometries and four different evaporation temperatures have been studied with water temperature ranging from 10 °C to 60 °C at the gas cooler inlet. The results show a strong influence of IHX characteristics on system’s performance.

In adsorption heat pumps, the adsorbent is typically combined with heat conducting structures in order to ensure high power output. A new approach for the direct integration of zeolite granules into a copper structure made of short copper fibers is presented here. Zeolite NaY granules with two different grain sizes are coated with copper fibers and powder and sintered to larger structures. The sorption dynamics of these structures were measured and evaluated in terms of heat and mass transfer resistances and compared to the loose grain configuration of the same material. We found that the thermal conductivity of such a composite structure is approximately 10 times higher than the thermal conductivity of an adsorbent bed with NaY granules. Sorption equilibrium measurements with a volumetric method indicate that the maximum uptake is not altered by the manufacturing process. Furthermore, the impact of the adsorbent–metal structure on the total thermal mass of an adsorption heat exchanger is evaluated. The price of the superior thermal conductivity is a 40% higher thermal mass of the adsorption heat exchanger compared to the loose grain configuration.

District heating and cooling (DHC), when combined with waste or renewable energy sources, is an environmentally sound alternative to individual heating and cooling systems in buildings. In this work, the theoretical energy and economic performances of a DHC network complemented by compression heat pump and sewage heat exchanger are assessed through dynamic, year-round energy simulations. The proposed system comprises also a water storage and a PV plant. The study stems from the operational experience on a DHC network in Budapest, in which a new sewage heat recovery system is in place and provided the experimental base for assessing main operational parameters of the sewage heat exchanger, like effectiveness, parasitic energy consumption and impact of cleaning. The energy and economic potential is explored for a commercial district in Italy. It is found that the overall seasonal COP and EER are 3.10 and 3.64, while the seasonal COP and EER of the heat pump alone achieve 3.74 and 4.03, respectively. The economic feasibility is investigated by means of the levelized cost of heating and cooling (LCOHC). With an overall LCOHC between 79.1 and 89.9 €/MWh, the proposed system can be an attractive solution with respect to individual heat pumps.

In the paper an analysis of the desorption temperature effect on the thermodynamic efficiency of the adsorption heat pumps is presented. The thermodynamic performance of heat pump is determined by Coefficient of Performance (COP) as well as exergetic efficiency coefficient (ηex) at the adsorption equilibrium conditions and compared to the performance at heat of evaporation of the working fluid conditions. Possible estimation of reduced efficiency of adsorption silica gel/water heat pump, as distinct from the equilibrium efficiency in realistic technical system is presented.
