Validation Assessment of a French Version of the Tinnitus Reaction Questionnaire

The present study compares the results obtained on original and French versions of the TRQ (Tinnitus Reaction Questionnaire) initially published by Wilson, Henry, Bowen, and Haralambous (1991) in English to evaluate the psychological distress of tinnitus sufferers. Reliability and validity of the French translation were determined using data from 173 normal hearing or hearing-impaired patients with tinnitus lasting from 1 month to 41 years. They completed the translated questionnaire and a short version of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. The results indicated good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha=.94), and the reliability of the French version of the TRQ was demonstrated, except for items 5 and 20. High statistically significant correlations were found between the TRQ and Depression, Psychaesthenia, and Anxiety Mini-Mult subscales. The validation demonstrates only minor effects of language. The French version of the TRQ thus is an equally valid tool as the original English version for evaluating tinnitus distress of a patient.

This French translation of the Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire (PAQ) was translated from the original English version. An initial translation from English to French was conducted and refined by the authorship team. These French items were then back-translated into English by a NAATI approved translator. Minor refinements to some of the French items were made by the authorship team on the basis of this back-translation, resulting in the final French version of the PAQ presented in this document. Our team is currently conducting a psychometric study on this French PAQ to examine its validity and reliability. Cette traduction française du Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire (PAQ) a été réalisée à partir de la version originale anglaise. Une première traduction de l'anglais vers le français a été réalisée et affinée par l'équipe des auteurs. Ces items français ont ensuite été retraduits en anglais par un traducteur agréé par le NAATI. Des améliorations mineures ont été apportées à certains items français par l'équipe des auteurs sur la base de cette retraduction, pour aboutir à la version française finale du PAQ présentée dans ce document. Notre équipe mène actuellement des études psychométriques sur la version française du PAQ afin d'en examiner la validité et la fiabilité.

Sensory symptoms were recently added to the diagnostic criteria of autism spectrum disorder and may be a mechanism underlying the broad phenotype of autism spectrum disorder. To measure sensory symptoms based on perceptual rather than affective, regulative, or attention components, the Sensory Perception Quotient (SPQ) measuring five modalities of sensory sensitivity has been developed. In this study, the Dutch translation of the abridged SPQ-Short was investigated in a large sample of adults with ( n = 657) and without autism spectrum disorder ( n = 585). Its hypothesized factor structure, combining modality specific and one modality-independent factor, was assessed in a hierarchical model. Results show that modality-specific subscales are indeed present in the short version. Furthermore, its reliability is high and comparable to the original English version. The autism spectrum disorder group reported higher sensory sensitivities than the comparison group, and women with autism spectrum disorder reported higher sensitivities compared with men with autism spectrum disorder. The SPQ-Short correlates with all Autism Quotient (AQ)-Short subscales, except for the “imagination” subscale. The SPQ-Short seems suitable to further explore the relationship between basic sensory sensitivities in autism spectrum disorder and their related symptoms such as over- and under-responsivity to sensory stimulation. Lay Abstract Individuals on the autism spectrum often experience heightened or reduced sensory sensitivities. This feature was recently added to the diagnostic manual for autism ( Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed. (DSM-5)). To measure sensory sensitivities, the Sensory Perception Quotient (SPQ) has been developed. In this study, we tested whether a Dutch translation of the abridged SPQ-Short yields similar results as the original English version. We also tested whether this questionnaire can measure modality specific sensitivities. To this end, 657 adults with autism spectrum disorder and 585 adults without an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis filled out the Dutch SPQ-Short. The Dutch questionnaire data were very similar to the original English version: adults with autism spectrum disorder were more sensitive compared with adults without autism spectrum disorder. Women with autism spectrum disorder are more sensitive compared with men with autism spectrum disorder. Gender did not have an effect in the group without autism spectrum disorder. Individuals reporting higher sensory sensitivities also reported more autistic traits (such as lower social interests, or increased fascination for patterns). Finally, we found that the Dutch SPQ-Short is suited to measure modality-specific sensitivities. We conclude that the Dutch translation is a viable tool to measure sensory sensitivities in adults with and without autism spectrum disorder and can be used to further our understanding of differences in perception in people with or without autism spectrum disorder.

Confirmatory factor analysis showed an adequate model fit with the following indicators: SRMR = 0.058 / RMSEA = 0.07 / CFI = 0.88 / TLI = 0.87. The French translation had a good internal consistency (Cronbach alpha score > 0.7 for all subscales) and a good temporal stability (correlation score between two measurements = 0.89). Conclusion This French version has an acceptable validity of the construct, a good internal consistency and good temporal reliability, and may be used to evaluate the learning climate. Summary: There is increasing interest in the abbreviated form of the Revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised (EPQR-A) as a research tool for psychologists. The present study evaluates the psychometric properties of a French translation of the EPQR-A in order to facilitate its use among French researchers. Data from a sample of French undergraduate university students were used. The dimensionality of the EPQR-A was examined in terms of the underlying latent factors. Using confirmatory factor analysis, we found evidence for the unidimensionality of the four EPQR-A subscales of extraversion, neuroticism, psychoticism, and the lie scale. These results are consistent with those of previous research with the original English version of the EPQR-A ( Francis, Brown, & Philipchalk, 1992 ; Forrest, Lewis, & Shevlin, 2000 ). It is concluded that the French translation of the EPQR-A can be recommended for further use.

The Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI; C. W. Newman, G. P. Jacobson, & J. B. Spitzer, 1996) is widely used in a clinical context to assess tinnitus-related self-reported handicap and to report treatment outcomes. Test-retest reliability has been reported to be high, and high convergent validity with other measures of tinnitus distress has been reported. Factor analysis of the subscales of the THI has previously been reported for a Danish translation, but not for the English version. In the present study, the THI was factor analyzed using data collected from a group of 80 clinical tinnitus patients and 116 patients with unilateral vestibular schwannoma. The factor analysis yielded strong support for a unifactorial structure of the scale, with a majority of items loading on the first factor, and high internal consistency of the total score. The authors recommend use of the total score in research and in clinical practice.

Successful emotion regulation is a key aspect of efficient social functioning and personal well-being. Difficulties in emotion regulation lead to relationship impairments and are presumed to be involved in the onset and maintenance of some psychopathological disorders as well as inappropriate behaviors. Gratz and Roemer (2004 ) developed the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), a comprehensive instrument measuring emotion regulation problems that encompasses several dimensions on which difficulties can occur. The aim of the present work was to develop a French translation of this scale and to provide an initial validation of this instrument. The French version was created using translation and backtranslation procedures and was tested on 455 healthy students. Congruence between the original and the translated scales was .98 (Tucker’s phi) and internal consistency of the translation reached .92 (Cronbach’s α). Moreover, test-retest scores were highly correlated. Altogether, the initial validation of the French version of the DERS (DERS-F) offers satisfactory results and permits the use of this instrument to map difficulties in emotion regulation in both clinical and research contexts.

Abstract. The need for efficient personality inventories has led to the wide use of short instruments. The corresponding items often contain multiple, potentially conflicting descriptors within one item. In Study 1 ( N = 198 university students), the reliability and validity of the TIPI (Ten-Item Personality Inventory) was compared with the reliability and validity of a modified TIPI based on items that rephrased each two-descriptor item into two single-descriptor items. In Study 2 ( N = 268 university students), we administered the BFI-10 (Big Five Inventory short version) and a similarly modified version of the BFI-10 without two-descriptor items. In both studies, reliability and construct validity values occasionally improved for separated multi-descriptor items. The inventories with multi-descriptor items showed shortcomings in some factors of the TIPI and the BFI-10. However, the other scales worked comparably well in the original and modified inventories. The limitations of short personality inventories with multi-descriptor items are discussed.
