Abstract. During a routine analysis of whistlers on the wide-band VLF recording of the DEMETER satellite, a specific signal structure of numerous fractional-hop whistlers, termed the "Spiky Whistler" (SpW) was identified. These signals appear to be composed of a conventional whistler combined by the compound mode-patterns of guided wave propagation, suggesting a whistler excited by a lightning "tweek" spheric. Rigorous, full-wave modelling of tweeks, formed by the long subionospheric guided spheric propagation and of the impulse propagation across an arbitrarily inhomogeneous ionosphere, gave an accurate description of the SpW signals. The electromagnetic impulses excited by vertical, preferably CG lightning discharge, exhibited the effects of guided behaviour and of the dispersive ionospheric plasma along their paths. This modelling and interpretation provides a consistent way to determine the generation and propagation characteristics of the recorded SpW signals, as well as to describe the traversed medium.

This paper presents a rigorous full-wave analysis of a high Tc superconducting rectangular microstrip antenna with a rectangular aperture in the ground plane. To include the effect of the superconductivity of the microstrip patch in the full-wave analysis, a complex surface impedance is considered. The proposed approach is validated by comparing the computed results with previously published data. Results showing the effect of the aperture on the resonance of the superconducting microstrip antenna are given.

In this chapter, three planar diplexers based on microstrip resonators are presented. An overview on diplexers is introduced. Then, two designed and fabricated microstrip diplexers with compact size and good performances are exposed. The first diplexer is designed using open loop resonators while the second circuit is achieved based on triangular loop resonators. The third structure represents a compact diplexer designed by using a pair of H-shaped resonators coupled with a coupling patch and two Input/Output (I/O) feed lines. The incorporated slots in the ground plane of the proposed circuit allow the control of the resonant frequencies and enhance its electrical performances. Furthermore, the introduction of these slots represents an interesting solution to miniaturize the microwave filter and diplexer. An analytic method is applied to extract the equivalent LC model of the band pass filters and diplexer. A full wave electromagnetic Analysis is achieved to evaluate the electrical performances of the proposed diplexers by using ADS and CST-MWS.
