The paper is concerned with analysis state of surfaces of waste dumps coal deposits according to Earth remote sensing. It is noted, that formed because of open-pit operations at Bikinsky and Raichikhinsky coal mining enterprise areas denudation accumulative violations were determinate by using programs for satellite images interpretation, as well as certain large forms of man-made relief (such as quarries, dumps, sedimentation tanks) were identified, followed by the calculation of their areas and the assessment of the value of environmental and economic damage to the environment, i.e. it was possible to give not only a qualitative description of the pollution process, but also its quantitative assessment. The approach to biomass determination based on vegetation NDVI index is presented. The conclusion is based on possibility of selfrestoration of the plant ecosystem on the surface of mining landscapes without special work on the reclamation of disturbed lands.

Based on the remote sensing data, the aggregated information has been provided on rock disposal dumps of the surface and abandoned coal deposits in the mining regions of Siberia and the Far East. High-resolution satellite images have helped to square the acreage of slope grade horizontal alignments of rock disposal dumps, as well as the yielding capacity of plant ecosystems on the dump slopes. The rock dumps architecture has been proposed to ensure the ecological balance generation at the appropriate pace. The economic indicators of the remedial ecology package work at the rock dumps have been provided.

A brief description of the industrial and logistics center operating in the city of Novorossiysk on the coast of the Tsemesskaya Bay in the Black Sea is presented. According to remote sensing data, the area of open pit mining of rock dumps dumped during the development of three marl deposits for use at four cement plants was determined. According to the results of satellite imagery and analytical calculations, downward trends in changes in the density of vegetation cover in territories with natural landscapes adjacent to the territory of industrial facilities located on the coast of the Tsemesskaya Bay were revealed.

The paper presents the results of a study of the ecological state of rock dumps and repositories of processed gold-bearing ore in the course of open-pit mining of gold deposits in the Chelyabinsk region. According to remote sensing data and analytical calculations, it was established that the rate of reclamation of disturbed lands lags behind the rate of their withdrawal for the needs of gold mining enterprises. In parallel with this, low levels of vegetation cover restoration coefficients were revealed on waste dumps.

The article considers the methodology of monitoring specially protected natural areas using remote sensing data. The research materials are satellite images of the Landsat 5 and Landsat 8 satellites, obtained from the resource of the US Geological Survey. The key areas of the study were 3 specially protected areas located within the boundaries of the forest-steppe landscapes of the Stavropol upland, the reserves «Alexandrovskiy», «Russkiy Les», «Strizhament». The space survey materials were selected for the period 1991–2020, and the data from the summer seasons were used. The NDVI index is chosen as the method of processing the spectral channels of satellite imagery. To integrate long-term satellite imagery into a single raster image, the method of variance of the variation series for the NDVI index was used. The article describes an algorithm for processing satellite images, which allows us to identify the features of the dynamics of the vegetation state of the studied territory for the period 1991–2020. The bitmap image constructed by means of the variance of the NDVI index was classified by the quantile method, to translate numerical values into classes with qualitative characteristics. There were 4 classes of the territory according to the degree of dynamism of the vegetation state: “stable”, “slightly variable”, “moderately variable”, “highly variable”. The paper highlights the factors of landscape transformation, including natural and anthropogenic ones. In the course of the study, the determining influence of anthropogenic factors of transformation was noted. The greatest impact is on the reserve «Alexandrovskiy», the least on the reserve «Russkiy Les», in the reserve «Strizhament» the impact is expressed locally. The paper identifies the leading anthropogenic factors of vegetation transformation, based on their influence on vegetation.

Accurate mapping of open-pit mine areas is a prerequisite for the efficient resource management of extractive companies, but also detailed mapping is a requirement for public administrations, especially regarding the monitoring of restored areas. In previous works, our team has contributed to a better knowledge of the use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) technologies for soil/vegetation restoration monitoring purposes, and in this work, we present a novel protocol to support combined interests of both private companies and governmental agencies. We introduce a case study in which we show the capability of multispectral sensors onboard of a low-weight multicopter to describe land cover typologies in restored areas (such as grass, scrubs, trees, topsoil and mine spoils) by applying remote sensing and GIS techniques. Moreover, we assess the capability of digital terrain models (Digital Elevation Model, Digital Surface Model, Digital Slope Model) derived from photogrammetric techniques, to provide useful and fast topographic information for the proper management of open-pit mine exploitation and restoration. By applying these techniques, we present a cost-effective workflow adequate to monitor land cover dynamics in restored areas, but also volumetric changes in stockpiles, waste dumps and extraction faces. This combined approach, supporting both environmental and industrial needs, aims to enhance the collaboration between sectors, establishing synergies, reducing costs by sharing knowledge, and adding transparency to their relation.

Guidelines for Mine Waste Dump and Stockpile Design is a comprehensive, practical guide to the investigation, design, operation and monitoring of mine waste dumps, dragline spoils and major stockpiles associated with large open pit mines. These facilities are some of the largest man-made structures on Earth, and while most have performed very well, there are cases where instabilities have occurred with severe consequences, including loss of life and extensive environmental and economic damage. Developed and written by industry experts with extensive knowledge and experience, this book is an initiative of the Large Open Pit (LOP) Project. It comprises 16 chapters that follow the life cycle of a mine waste dump, dragline spoil or stockpile from site selection to closure and reclamation. It describes the investigation and design process, introduces a comprehensive stability rating and hazard classification system, provides guidance on acceptability criteria, and sets out the key elements of stability and runout analysis. Chapters on site and material characterisation, surface water and groundwater characterisation and management, risk assessment, operations and monitoring, management of ARD, emerging technologies and closure are included. A chapter is also dedicated to the analysis and design of dragline spoils. Guidelines for Mine Waste Dump and Stockpile Design summarises the current state of practice and provides insight and guidance to mine operators, geotechnical engineers, mining engineers, hydrogeologists, geologists and other individuals that are responsible at the mine site level for ensuring the stability and performance of these structures. Readership includes mining engineers, geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, engineering geologists, hydrogeologists, environmental scientists, and other professionals involved in the site selection, investigation, design, permitting, construction, operation, monitoring, closure and reclamation of mine waste dumps and stockpiles.
