Urban green infrastructure has various benefits known as ecosystem services such as regulating, cultural, provisioning and supporting services. Among the provided benefits there are decrease of air temperature, increasing humidity and mitigating urban heat island as regulating services; human-nature relations as cultural services; improving air quality, carbon sequestration as provisioning services and photosynthesis, nutrient and water cycling as supporting services. The high intensity of the urbanization process across the last decades coupled with weak legislative frameworks resulted both in large areas affected by urban sprawl and densification of the existing urban fabric. Both phenomenon generated loss in open spaces, especially green areas. In the context of the sustainable urbanization promoted by HABITAT Agenda, the knowledge related with the distribution, size and quality of urban green areas represents a priority. The study aim is to identify small urban green areas at local level at different time moments for a dynamic evaluation. We focused on small urban green areas since they are scarcely analysed even if their importance for the urban quality of life Is continuously increasing given the urbanization process. We used satellite imagery acquired by Planet Satellite Constellations, with a spatial resolution of 3.7 m and daily coverage, for extracting green areas. The images were processed using Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) techniques implemented in Esri ArcGIS Pro. The spatial analysis we performed generated information about distribution, surfaces, quality (based on NDVI) and dynamic of small urban green areas. The results are connected with the local level development of the urban areas we analysed, but also with the population consumption pattern for leisure services, housing, transport or other public utilities. The analysis can represent a complementary method for extracting green areas at urban level and can support the data collection for calculating urban sustainability indicators.

Urban development has historically been seen as both a cause and solution for social inequalities in health. However, environmental and individual gradients within urban areas occur everywhere, and are resistant to change. Environments are infl uenced by the degree and type of industrialization, quality of housing, accessibility to green space and - of increasing concern - transport. Individual behaviour, however, also contributes to social differences, both through migration and by the effects on individuals of cultural experiences through the life-course. Reduction on inequalities may be possible through larger social action, for example urban regeneration. There remains an important role for public health in addressing determinants of health at the population level.

Due to the continuous development of urbanization, it had a serious impact on urban ecology. Therefore, techniques to improve the living environment and quality of life in urban areas as well as ways to improve aesthetics and greening of urban gardens have gradually become the focus of attention. Re-building and arranging the green plant community rationally can effectively improve the quality of people's living environment. Besides, by maximizing ecological functions, it can better improve the quality of urban environmental. This paper introduces key technologies of green planting construction in urban landscaping projects and suggest ways to improve the urban ecological environment by viewing it from existing problems in the current urban ecological environment.

This paper explores the urbanization process under Functional Urban Areas (FUAs) definition considering Ecuador as case of study. Analyzing data from 1950 to 2010, we have identified 28 FUAs that confirm that urbanization has rapidly increased in Ecuador since 1962. Then, a slum index, which is constructed using a United Nations methodology, is applied to approach individuals’ wellbeing at dwelling level into FUAs for the period 1990 - 2010. We find that the greater improvement in terms of quality of dwelling takes place during the period 1990 - 2001 compared to 2001-2010.

Abstract Sophisticated strategies are required for flood warning in urban areas regarding convective heavy rainfall events. An approach is presented to improve short-term precipitation forecasts by combining ensembles of radar nowcasts with the high-resolution numerical weather predictions COSMO-DE-EPS of the German Weather Service. The combined ensemble forecasts are evaluated and compared to deterministic precipitation forecasts of COSMO-DE. The results show a significantly improved quality of the short-term precipitation forecasts and great potential to improve flood warnings for urban catchments. The combined ensemble forecasts are produced operationally every 5 min. Applications involve the Flood Warning Service Hamburg (WaBiHa) and real-time hydrological simulations with the model KalypsoHydrology.

The development and advance of city is the sign of human civilization, and the crystal of the mutual development of economy, politics, culture, and ecological environment for one age. In the ecological protection, Shenyang city has not protected and destroyed original public services from the view of cultural ecology. The cause is that Shenyang city lacks in the consciousness to maintain the ecology, which seriously influences the development of Shenyang city and threatens human healthy, and has been an important factor to restrain the sustainable development of the city (Li, 2008). Aiming at this problem, many countermeasures such as establishing the volunteer organization of ecological preservation and keeping feasible density are proposed in this article. With the development of the human society, the environment protection and ecology have been widely applied in various domains of the city. The development of the ecological concept has made the ecological city be one of the hottest topics nowadays. To maintain the city ecological system and build the city ecological figure is not closely related with the adjustment of Shenyang industrial structure, but directly influence the improvement of about seven millions denizens’ habitation condition in Shenyang. Therefore, the research and thinking about the ecological construction and preservation should be widely concerned by the whole society (Li, 2001).

Deep water coastline and ecological environment are natural resources that the development of port city will depend on. Driven by economy globalization, port city development is the inevitable choice to guarantee economic flow and promote sustainable development of trading. Especially in newly rising developing countries, the construction of port city and green city should be organically combined, and the ecological environment protection becomes the important work for construction of green port city. Meishan Island in Ningbo is just at the critical period for determing the long-term development orientation. Meishan Island is the only undeveloped area in Ningbo City, which has deep water coastline, land resources, ecological environment and cultural tourism resources. In early 2007, China Academy of Urban Planning and Design is appointed by Beilun District Government of Ningbo City to perform a demonstration of long-term development orientation for Meishan Island. The topic is “Investigation of Ningbo Meishan Island Development”. The development plan and ecological environment protection plan for deep water port city was investigated on the base of this project, and some references for investigation were provided on ecological environment protection plan for deep water port city. The natural geographical condition of Ningbo Meishan Island was introduced as well as its role in development of regional economy and society; performed factor analysis for ecological environment of Meishan Island. Considering the level of ecological protection plan, Meishan Island is divided into three areas by functions which are port city development zone, ecological buffer zone and ecological protection zone.
