Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a kind of porous materials, which has large specific surface area, high porosity, diverse structure, excellent thermal stability and solvent stability etc. So, it has attracted extensive attention as an adsorbent for solid phase extraction (SPE). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a kind of persistent organic pollutants that can lead serious hurts to the ecological environment and human health. The purpose of this paper is to optimize the types and proportion of mixed lanthanum based MOFs, and to improve the enrichment efficiency of SPE. Then a method to analysis PAHs by SPE-HPLC was established. Several main factors that could effected the pre-treatment efficient, such as the amount of adsorbent, the amount and pH of PAHs water sample, and the volume of eluent, were investigated. After optimized, the extraction of seven PAHs in water sample was achieved and the recovery rates were 80.67%, 80.06%, 54.69%, 82.62%, 118.87%, 70.30% and 95.57% respectively.

A diatomite supported graphene oxide composite (GO@Dt–NH2) was fabricated and explored as a solid-phase extraction adsorbent coupled with high performance liquid chromatography to determine the trace hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (2-hydroxy-naphthalene, 2-hydroxy-fluorene, 1-hydroxy-phenanthrene, and 1-hydroxy-pyrene) in urine samples. The fabricated composites were characterized by X-ray powder diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. GO@Dt–NH2 offered enhanced adsorption affinity towards the analytes compared with the bare diatomite. The amount of graphene oxide and the factors affecting solid-phase extraction were investigated in detail. Under the optimized conditions, the method gave good linearity (0.30–200 ng/mL) and a low detection limit (0.10–0.15 ng/mL) for the hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The average recovery for spiked urine samples with three levels ranged from 90.6% to 100%. The intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations were in the range of 1.8–6.4% and 2.7–11.8%, respectively. Besides, the GO@Dt–NH2 provided enrichment factors of 18–20 and superior purification ability. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine samples from smoking volunteers.

An analytical procedure based on solid-phase extraction, using ethyl acetate as the elution solvent, and high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence and diode array detection was developed for the identification and quantification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in honey. The method has been optimized and validated in accordance with Commission Regulation 333/2007 and Commission Decision 2002/657/EC. This method allows the identification of the 15 PAHs that should be monitored in food matrices, as proposed in 2002 by the Scientific Committee on Food and later by the European Union in the Commission Recommendation 2005/108/EC, because of their genotoxic and carcinogenic properties. The results of the validation study were in agreement with quality criteria described in European legislation in terms of sensitivity, accuracy, and ruggedness, and the method was applied to the analysis of 42 honey samples (21 from Spain and 21 from other regions). The honey samples were not contaminated by PAHs at detectable levels and thus could be marketed without health risk.

Based on the principle of solid phase extraction and the purification method using Florida silica, sixteen various kinds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as naphthalene, acenaphthene and fluorene were measured in Urumqi snow by means of HPLC. The results showed that the concentration of PAHs was different in different sampling sites in Urumqi. The total concentration of PAHs was in the range of 0.2883 ~ 8.814 µg/mL and the content of PAHs snow was higher than that in water, which indicated that the snow was polluted by organic matters to a certain degree and the pollution was not so serious compared with the groundwater. So the snow has a certain application value for life.
