Clary sage (Salvia sclarea L.) essential oil-ethanol-water system was investigated. The surface tension, density and refractive index of clary sage essential oil + ethanol (70%, 75%, 80%, 85%, 90%, and 95%) solutions were measured. The chemical composition of solutions (ratio 1:5, 1:6, and 1:7) was determined using GC/MS analysis. According the experimental results ternary phase diagrams were constructed. Comparative revue between experimental and calculated surface tension data was done. After analyses good correlation between two surface tension values was observed

Modeling of the Thermodynamic Properties of Liquid Fe-Ni and Fe-Co Alloys From the Surface Tension DataRecently proposed method of modeling of thermodynamic properties of liquid binary alloys from their surface tension data is described. The method utilizes Melford and Hoar equation, relating surface tension with excess Gibbs free energy, combined with new description of the monatomic surface layer and β parameter. The method is tested on Fe-Ni and Fe-Co alloys and the obtained results show very good agreement with experimental thermodynamic data of other authors. The model allows also to calculate the surface tension from thermodynamic data, and it gives better agreement with experimental results than those modeled with the use of Butler equation and traditionally defined monatomic surface layer and β = 0.83.

The thermodynamic and physicochemical properties of lavender oil (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.)-ethanol-water system were measured. The chemical composition of solutions of the lavender oil in 70%, 75%, 80%, 85%, 90%, and 95% ethanol was determined using GC/MS analysis. The main compounds in the solutions are oxygenated monoterpenes (β-linalool, terpinen-4-ol, α-terpineol, and linalyl acetate), followed by monoterpene hydrocarbons ((Z)-β-ocimene and (E)-β-ocimene), and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (β-caryophyllene and (E)-β-farnesene). The ternary phase diagrams were constructed. By multiply linear regression model for surface tension prediction was applied. The thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of lavender oil – ethanol - water system were calculated (energy of Gibb’s, enthalpy, entropy, energy of activation, and coefficient of diffusion).

Background: Amomum xanthiodes has been popularly used in traditional medicine. However, the knowledge about essential oil of A. xanthiodes from A Luoi district, Thua Thien Hue province (Viet Nam) is rather poor. In this study, we determined the physicochemical properties and chemical composition of seed essential oil of this species to provide scientific basis, clarify practical value, contribute to the development and conservation of precious medicine resources. Materials and method: Fruits of A. xanthiodes were collected from A Luoi - Thua Thien Hue in June 2017. The seed essential oil was extracted by using the hydrodistillation method. Its physicochemical properties were determined including density, refractive index, acid value, saponification value, ester value, and iod value. This oil was then analysed by gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Results: The yield obtained from the hydrodistillation procedures was 1.66% (v/w) calculated on a dry weight basis. Density (at 20oC) was 0.911, refractive index (at 20oC) was 1.4734, acid value was 12.74, saponification value was 110.97, ester value was 98,23, and iod value was 24.89. A total of 15 compounds were found in seed essential oil which belonged to monoterpenes and their derivatives. This oil comprised mainly of bornyl acetate (27.26%), camphor (23.73%), endo-borneol (13.78%), camphene (11.62%), D-limonene (10.96%), and β-myrcene (6.17%). Conclusion: the physicochemical properties and chemical composition of the essential oil of Amomum xanthioides from A Luoi – Thua Thien Hue have been determined. Key words: Amomum xanthiodes, essential oil, physicochemical properties, GC/MS, bornyl acetate, camphor
