PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF THE ESSENTIAL OIL OF AMOMUM XANTHIOIDES FROM A LUOI - THUA THIEN HUE

Background: Amomum xanthiodes has been popularly used in traditional medicine. However, the knowledge about essential oil of A. xanthiodes from A Luoi district, Thua Thien Hue province (Viet Nam) is rather poor. In this study, we determined the physicochemical properties and chemical composition of seed essential oil of this species to provide scientific basis, clarify practical value, contribute to the development and conservation of precious medicine resources. Materials and method: Fruits of A. xanthiodes were collected from A Luoi - Thua Thien Hue in June 2017. The seed essential oil was extracted by using the hydrodistillation method. Its physicochemical properties were determined including density, refractive index, acid value, saponification value, ester value, and iod value. This oil was then analysed by gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Results: The yield obtained from the hydrodistillation procedures was 1.66% (v/w) calculated on a dry weight basis. Density (at 20oC) was 0.911, refractive index (at 20oC) was 1.4734, acid value was 12.74, saponification value was 110.97, ester value was 98,23, and iod value was 24.89. A total of 15 compounds were found in seed essential oil which belonged to monoterpenes and their derivatives. This oil comprised mainly of bornyl acetate (27.26%), camphor (23.73%), endo-borneol (13.78%), camphene (11.62%), D-limonene (10.96%), and β-myrcene (6.17%). Conclusion: the physicochemical properties and chemical composition of the essential oil of Amomum xanthioides from A Luoi – Thua Thien Hue have been determined. Essential oils obtained from many plants showed various kinds of insecticidal properties; some of them have been considered as alternative insecticides for pest control. The present study was aimed at determining the chemical composition of the essential oil from the roots of Bupleurum bicaule Helm, as well as evaluating the contact and repellent activities of the oil and four identified compounds against Lasioderma serricorne and Liposcelis bostrychophila adults. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation, and its components were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). 26 components were determined and the main compounds included trans-2-isopropylbicyclo[4.3.0]non-3-en-8-one (25.9%), 4,5-dimethyl-1,2,3,6,7,8,8a,8b-octahydrobiphenylene (23.5%), and 1,4-dimethoxy-2-tert-butylbenzene (4.3%). It was found that the essential oil exhibited contact toxicity against L. serricorne (LD50 = 11.91 μg/adult), but the contact toxicity against L. bostrychophila could not be observed. The essential oil also showed strong repellent activity against L. serricorne with percent repellency of 100% at 78.63 nl/cm2. Four chemical compounds, 1,4-dimethoxy-2-tert-butylbenzene, bornyl acetate, (2E,4E)-2,4-nonadienal, and β-bisabolene, exhibited various levels of bioactivities. The experimental results indicated that the essential oil of B. bicaule and its individual compounds could be used in insecticidal and repellent strategies for stored product insects.

<p><strong>Objective: </strong>In the present study, the influence of harvesting time (April, June, August and October 2015) on the essential oil composition of <em>Abies koreana</em> twigs from Korea was investigated.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>The essential oil from the twigs of <em>A. koreana</em> was isolated by steam distillation and its chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The essential oil yield was found to vary from 0.76 to 1.20% depending on the month of harvesting. The GC-MS analysis revealed the identification of 26 different essential oil components from the twigs harvested in the months of April, June, August and October, which were mostly monoterpene hydrocarbons (57.63–72.38%) followed by oxygenated monoterpenes (18.82–25.96%).<strong> </strong>Harvesting time mainly influenced on the concentration of the major components of the essential oil from the twigs of <em>A. koreana</em>. Limonene (17.38–31.13%), bornyl acetate (13.22–21.17%), camphene (12.56–13.26%), α-pinene (11.05–13.02%), β-pinene (4.55–5.70%), 3-carene (5.21–6.43%) and β-eudesmol (1.49–8.24%) were detected as the major components in the essential oil.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>The main differences between the essential oil compositions of four different months can be referred to limonene and bornyl acetate. The results showed considerable variations in the composition of essential oil, particularly quantitative variation during different harvesting months.</p>

The purpose of this study was to investigate the chemical composition of the essential oil extracted from Psidium guajava leaves and to explore the medicinal value of β-caryophyllene in pharmaceutical science. The essential oils of P. guajava leaves were extracted by the hydrodistillation method, using a Clevenger-type apparatus and the chemical composition of essential oils was investigated by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The yield of extracted essential oils was 0.6% (w/w) dry weight. The main compounds found in the leaves were β-caryophyllene (20.34%), globulol (8.20%), trans-nerolidol (7.72%), aromadendrene (4.34%), cis-α-bisabolene (3.82%), tetracosane (3.68%), octadecane (3.66%), Z, Z, Z-1,5,9,9-tetramethyl-1,4,7-cycloundecatriene (3.44%), β-bisabolene (3.41%), limonene (3.09%), octacosane (2.88%), δ-cadinene (2.52%), and 1,4-cadadiene (2.04%). The main chemical class of the essential oil was terpenoids, which represent 71.65%, followed by hydrocarbons (26.31%). A total of 50 components were identified, among these β-caryophyllene was found to be dominant, which has great medicinal value, and some other compounds were also identified for the first time in the essential oil of P. guajava leaves.

The chemical composition of the essential oil of fresh young needles with twigs of Douglas fir (Pseudosuga menziesii Mirb. Franco) obtained by hydrodistillation were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Ten compounds, accounting for 94.26 % of the oil, were identified. The main compounds found were bornyl acetate (34.65 %), camphene (29.82 %), ?-pinene (11.65 %) and santene (5.45 %). The antifungal activity of the essential oil was tested against various fungal species. The minimum inhibitory concentration of Douglas fir essential oil ranged from 1.5 to 4 ?g mL-1. The fungi most sensitive to the tested oil were Phomopsis helianthi, while Penicillium species, along with Microsporum canis, were the most resistant. Compared to the commercial fungicidal agent bifonazole, the studied essential oil demonstrated higher antifungal activity.

Objective: The objective of the study was to extract the essential oil and to determine the physicochemical properties, chemical composition of the essential oil from Myrtus communis leaves by using GC-MS. Methods: 500 g of the powdered material (dried leaves) was subjected to hydro-distillation using Clevenger-type apparatus for 3 hours and the essential oil was dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate. The physicochemical properties essential oil such as solubility, density, specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation, specific rotation, acid value, saponification value and ester value were determined, which are used to determine the quality of essential oils extracted from plant leaves. The chemical composition of the essential oil of Myrtus communis leaves was analysed using GC-MS. Results: The yield of essential oil of Myrtus communis leaves was 0.463  0.001 g/100 gram of dry sample which is 0.463  0.001 % (w/w) with pale yellow colour and pleasant odour. The essential oil of Myrtus communis leaves was slightly soluble in water and ethanol while it was soluble in chloroform, petroleum ether and ethyl acetate. The essential oil was subjected to GC-MS analyses, twenty eight components representing 99.949 % of the total oil composition. Conclusion: The present study indicates that the extraction of essential oil from Myrtus communis leaves and GC-MS analysis, the essential oil of this plant have a potential of secondary metabolites which can be exploited as a good source of bioactive substances.

Siberian fir (Abies sibirica Ldb.) Is a raw material for obtaining valuable essential oil. A change in the composition of the plant's essential oil can serve as a sign of the ecological disadvantage of the territory. The aim of the work was to study the composition and physicochemical properties of Siberian fir essential oil, which grows in different regions of the Kirov region. Sampling sites were distinguished by their location, climate and level of anthropogenic load. Essential oil was obtained by steam distillation. Samples were studied by organoleptic and physicochemical properties, their composition was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. It was established that the acid number was increased in the obtained oil samples, and oxygen-containing derivatives of terpenes (bornyl acetate) prevailed in their composition. Especially a lot of oxygen-containing substances was found in fir essential oil, which grows in large industrial centers of the region (the cities of Kirov and Kirovo-Chepetsk). The predominance of monoterpene hydrocarbons (camphene, limonene) was found in the composition of fir essential oil from the village of Ilyinskoye. Sesquiterpenoids in the samples were contained in a small amount, and camphor was noted only in the sample of fir oil from the village of Loino. The study confirms the data that with increasing pollution of the territory in the composition of the essential oil of Siberian fir, the share of bornyl acetate and other oxygen-containing compounds begins to increase.

Medicinal plants are considered modern resources for producing agents that could act as alternatives to antibiotics in demeanor of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The aim of the study was to evaluate the chemical composition and antibacterial activities of essential oil of Foeniculum vulgare (FV) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry was done to specify chemical composion. As a screen test to detect antibacterial properties of the essential oil, agar disk and agar well diffusion methods were employed. Macrobroth tube test was performed to determinate MIC. The results indicated that the most substance found in FV essential oil was Trans-anethole (47.41 %), also the essential oil of FV with 0.007 g/ml concentration has prevented P. aeruginosa and with 0.002 g/ml concentration has prevented B. subtilis from the growth. Thus, the research represents the antibacterial effects of the medical herb on test P. aeruginosa and B. subtilis. We believe that the article provide support to the antibacterial properties of the essential oil. The results indicate the fact that the essential oil from the plant can be useful as medicinal or preservatives composition.

The physicochemical properties of six imported and one locally produced edible vegetable oils (soybean oil, sunflower oil, sunlit oil, hayat oil, avena oil, USA vegetable oil and Niger oil) purchased from Bahir Dar city, Ethiopia, were examined for their compositional quality. All the oil samples were characterized for specific gravity, moisture content, color, relative viscosity, refractive indices, ash content, peroxide value, saponification value, smoke point, acid value, free fatty acid value and trace metals contents using established methods. The result clearly indicates that some of the oil samples exhibited unacceptable value when compared with physicochemical parameters recommended by the Codex Alimentations Commission of FAO/WHO and the specification of Ethiopian standards. The contents of nickel (Ni), copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) in seven samples were determined using ICP-OES and their concentrations were found in the range of 1.8-20.4, 45.8-82.2 and 136.04-445.0 mg/kg, respectively.

Detailed chemical constituents of essential oil from the Pterocephalus hookeri leaves and its antimicrobial activities were investigated in this study. The essential oil, obtained by hydrodistillation, was characterized by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses. Among the 90 identified compounds, hexadecanoic acid (21.27%), phytol (8.03%), furfural (7.08%), oleic acid (5.25%), and phytone (4.56%) were the major components. In the antimicrobial assay, the essential oil showed strong inhibitory activities against Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, and Staphylococcus aureus with minimum inhibitory concentration values of 31.3, 62.5, and 125 µg/mL, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first report concerning chemical composition and antimicrobial activities of the essential oil from Pterocephalus hookeri.
