The genus Lavandula includes a variety of species under the common name lavender. Bulgaria has a tradition in the production of high-quality lavender oil. This is the result of many years of selection work, which includes the study of introduced samples and their adaptogenic abilities in the country habitat. Three samples of Lavandula angustifolia Mill., that originated from Poland were studied and compared with the Bulgarian varieties “Hemus” and “Sevtopolis”. The content of the essential oils ranged from 0.39% to 3.98%. The chemical composition, determined by GC/MS, revealed the main compounds: linalyl acetate (13.0÷44.9 %), linalool (21.8÷42.1%), β-caryophyllene (4.6÷7.4 %), cis-β ocimene (2.8÷10.5 %), lavandulyl acetate (1.9÷4.3%), terpinen-4-ol (0.3÷2.0 %), limonene+1.8 cineole (2.3÷6.0 %) and trans-β ocimene (0.1÷3.8%). The sample with the dark purple florescence showed promising quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the essential oil and can be involved in the selection program for lavender cultivation.

During the period 2014 – 2015 the herbicidal effect and the selectivity of isoxaflutole (Merlin 750 WG), oxadiargyl (Raft 400 SC), imazamox (Pulsar 40) and flumioxazine (Pledge 50 VP) were studied on lavender fields, Hemus and Jubilejna varieties. The present work focuses on the influence of low doses of the applied preparations on the yield and composition of the essential oil compared with untreated control. The results of two-year studies show that the treated variants have a higher yield on average of 0.7-1.6 kg / dka. The odoriferous ingredients range in the limits: linalyl acetate (20.0 - 38.6 %); linalool (20.6 - 46.2 %); lavandulyl acetate (1.9 - 5.9 %); 1,8 cineole (0,4 - 4,9 %) and camphor (0,2 - 0,6 %). Applying oxidiarigil results in greater changes in the composition of the Jubilejna variety, whereas the Hemus variety has the most influence by isoxaflutole.

In recent years, it has been shown that biostimulants can efficiently enhance plant metabolic processes, leading to an increased production of essential oil (EO) in aromatic plants. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of two different commercial biostimulants composed of amino acids and seaweed extract, normally used for food organic crops, on the production and composition of EO and hydrosol of Lavandula x intermedia, cultivar “Grosso”. The products were applied during 2020 growing season on lavender crops in three different locations of the Northern Italian (Emilia-Romagna Region) Apennines. Plants were harvested and EOs extracted by steam distillation and analyzed by gas chromatography. Both biostimulants affected the yield of EO per plant (+11% to +49% depending on the treatment/farm combination) without significantly changing the chemical composition of EOs and hydrosols. Conversely, the composition of EOs and hydrosols are related to the location, and the main compounds of “Grosso” cultivar, limonene, 1,8-cineole, cis-ocimene, linalool, camphor, borneol, terpinen-4-ol, and linalyl acetate, show different ratios at the experimental test sites. The differences might be due to the sunlight exposure and various maintenance of the crops over the years. In conclusion, these results suggest that the employment of biostimulants on lavandin crops do not endanger the quality of the EO while increasing biomass production and promoting the sustainability of the crop.

Nausea and vomiting (Emesis Gravidarum) often occurs in 1st trimester pregnant women. The cause is due to an increase in the hormones estrogen and HCG in early pregnancy. One of the effects is dehydration which causes the fetus to experience problems, therefore therapy is needed one of the therapies to deal with is the aroma therapy of lemon. International literature searched by electronic means with key words (emesis, lemon therapy, aromatherapy). 8 selection articles on the effect of lemon aromatherapy on emesis gravidarum. Result of this study is there were differences in emesis gravidarum in aromatherapy with the same treatment. One of the treatments for emesis gravidarum is a non-pharmacological method, namely lemon aromatherapy. Aromatherapy lemon therapy contains 66-80% limonene, geranil acetate, nerol, linalyl acetate, 0.4-15% pinene, 1-4% pinene, 6-14% terpinene and myrcen. Chemical compounds such as geranil acetate, nerol are useful for antidepressants, nantiseptics, anti spasmodics to relieve feelings of anxiety, stress, and fatigue. Conclusion of this research that the use of lemon aromatherapy is effective in reducing the occurrence of emesis gravidarum

Interest in the use of essential oils (EOs) in the biomedical and food industries have seen growing over the last decades due to their richness in bioactive compounds. The challenges in developing an EO extraction process that assure an efficient levels of monoterpenes with impact on biological activities have driven the present study, in which the EO extraction process of rosemary, lavender and citrus was performed by simultaneous hydrodistillation–steam distillation, and the influence of EO composition on biological activities, namely antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anti-acetylcholinesterase, anti-tyrosinase, antibacterial, and antibiofilm activity, were evaluated. The EO yields of combinations were generally higher than the individual plants (R. officinalis (Ro), L. angustifolia (La), and C. aurantium (Ca)) extracted by the conventional hydrodistillation. The EOs obtained by this process generally had a better capacity for scavenging the free radicals, inhibiting α-glucosidase, and acetylcholinesterase activities than the individual EOs. The combination of EOs did not improve the ability for scavenging peroxide hydrogen or the capacity for inhibiting lipoxygenase activity. The antioxidant activity or the enzyme inhibition activity could not only be attributed to their major compounds because they presented lower activities than the EOs. The chemical composition of the combination Ro:La:Ca, at the ratio 1/6:1/6:2/3, was enriched in 1,8-cineole, linalool, and linalyl acetate and resulted in lower MIC values for all tested strains in comparison with the ratio 1/6:2/3:1/6 that was deprived on those components. The biofilm formation of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria was impaired by the combination Ro:La:Ca at a sub-inhibitory concentration.

Purun tikus (Eleocharis dulcis) are wild plants found on swamp land which are quite abundant in South Kalimantan. This research was conducted to find out the most active extract from Chinese water chestnut as an attractant of white rice stem borer (Scirpophaga innotata). Purun tikus were made into extracts using the stepwise extraction method using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol, with yields of 0.74%, 0.81%, and 7.58%, respectively. The results of the attractant test on purun tikus extract showed that the extract of n-hexane purun tikus was the most active extract as an attractant in white rice stem borer (Scirpophaga innotata). The results of the analysis using GC-MS showed that the extract of n-hexane purun tikus contained several compounds, namely 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, isopulegol, citronellal, citronellyl acetate, βcitronellol, Z-citral, 1-bromo-3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadiene, citral, linalyl acetate, trans-caryophyllen, trans-phytol, verticellol.

According to the World Health Organization, neuropsychiatric disorders pose an increasingly greater burden on health, society, and economy of countries. Currently, there are strategies to prevent some of these disorders, and there are treatments or means to alleviate their symptoms. In the case of depression, the medication consists of antidepressant drugs. Such drugs can also be used in other conditions like anxiety, pain, or insomnia. A shortcoming of the currently used antidepressants is the occurrence of side effects that sometimes are unbearable for the patient. In this respect, a promising direction is the usage of medicinal plants. Plant parts are rich in phytochemicals that could be beneficial in mental disorders by acting on various targets. Here, we investigated the antidepressant effect of ten natural compounds from sage, mint, and citrus. The biological activity of these compounds was investigated by calculating pKi values and affinities for dopamine receptor D2, serotonin transporter (SERT), and 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1A (5-HT1A) using quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models. Our results showed that linalyl acetate, 1,8-cineole, and neryl acetate could be efficient antidepressants and neuroleptics.

AbstractThirty-one samples of essential oils used both in perfumery and aromatherapy were purchased to business-to-consumers suppliers and submitted to standard gas chromatography-based analysis of their chemical composition. Their compliance with ISO AFNOR standards was checked and revealed, although ISO AFNOR ranges are relatively loose, that more than 45% of the samples analyzed failed to pass the test and more than 19% were diluted with solvents such as propylene and dipropylene glycol, triethyl citrate, or vegetal oil. Cases of non-compliance could be due to substitution or dilution with a cheaper essential oil, such as sweet orange oil, blending with selected compounds (linalool and linalyl acetate, maybe of synthetic origin), or issues of aging, harvest, or manufacturing that should be either deliberate or accidental. In some cases, natural variability could be invoked. These products are made available to the market without control and liability by resellers and could expose the public to safety issues, in addition to commercial prejudice, in sharp contrast with the ever-increasing regulations applying to the sector and the high demand of consumers for safe, controlled and traceable products in fragrances and cosmetic products.

This work focuses on the synthesis and characterization of polymeric smart self-healing coatings. A comparison of structural, thermal, and self-healing properties of two different polymeric coatings comprising distinct self-healing agents (tung oil and linalyl acetate) is studied to elucidate the role of self-healing agents in corrosion protection. Towards this direction, urea-formaldehyde microcapsules (UFMCs) loaded with tung oil (TMMCs) and linalyl acetate (LMMCs) were synthesized using the in-situ polymerization method. The synthesis of both LMMCs and TMMCs under identical experimental conditions (900 rpm, 55 °C) has resulted in a similar average particle size range (63–125 µm). The polymeric smart self-healing coatings were developed by reinforcing a polymeric matrix separately with a fixed amount of LMMCs (3 wt.% and 5 wt.%), and TMMCs (3 wt.% and 5 wt.%) referred to as LMCOATs and TMCOATs, respectively. The development of smart coatings (LMCOATs and TMCOATs) contributes to achieving decent thermal stability up to 450 °C. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis indicates that the corrosion resistance of smart coatings increases with increasing concentration of the microcapsules (TMMCs, LMMCs) in the epoxy matrix reaching ~1 GΩ. As a comparison, LMCOATs containing 5 wt.% LMMCs demonstrate the best stability in the barrier properties than other developed coatings and can be considered for many potential applications.
