As a part of creative cultural industry, heritage tourism combines cultural, historical, artistic and scientific values. It includes both spiritual consumption and material consumption. It is not only a social and cultural phenomenon, but also an economic phenomenon, upgrading from sightseeing to purchasing goods and then to cultural experience. The process of heritage tourism experience is actually a process of encoding symbols. The attraction of heritage tourism derives from the symbolic significance of tourism itself. In essence, tourism consumption is a kind of symbolic consumption, which forms tourism motivation based on the attraction of indicative symbols, and then evolves emotional satisfaction in a symbolic environment. When tourists obtain emotional satisfaction through symbolic consumption, the premium ability of tourism commodities will be enhanced and the derivative value of tourism will thus be formed. Therefore, excavation and utilization of symbol consumption is the core factor of sustainable tourism construction.

Development and management of heritage tourism attractions pose several challenges, such as lack of financial resources and political support. heritage sites and attractions often include numerous attributes (e.g., education, guided tours, shopping for local products) that can be provided at various levels of involvement and interest. however, the financial constraints of heritage tourism sites inhibit the ability to improve programs and services. The purpose of this study is to identify and compare the preferences of consumers and ambassadors (i.e., local tourism and community leaders) for improving management programs and services of the South Carolina National heritage Corridor using a choice modeling method. Both groups were generally in favor of developing more opportunities for local shopping, education/interpretation, and enhancing the cultural experience when visiting the South Carolina National heritage Corridor. however, ambassadors were more in favor of developing education/interpretation and the cultural experience compared to consumers. As agencies develop programs and services designed to increase visitation, preference information from different constituent groups are valuable to effectively decide what programs and services to develop.

Historical and cultural blocks in Chinese historic districts are important components of sustainable heritage tourism. In towns along the Grand Canal, historical and cultural blocks are generally integrated with modern commerce, forming a complex space characterized by multi-elements, multi-cultures, and multi-functions. The understanding of tourists’ spatial cognition thus becomes extremely important to support heritage conservation and encourage sustainable heritage tourism. This study proposes a space syntax-based methodology to help inform heritage consultants and urban designers in understanding the tourists’ spatial cognition of canal town cultural blocks, and thereby assists designers and managers in identifying where cognitive experiences can be improved. The proposed method is applied to Nanyang, which is a canal town currently in decline in Shandong Province, and is contrasted with the ancient town of Wuzhen in Zhejiang Province, China, a highly successful tourist town. By using this proposed method, the relationship between street networks and tourists’ spatial cognition has been explored. The results of the analysis were evaluated in order to inform a range of design concepts that could enhance the sustainable heritage tourism experience of these two towns.

These dimensions can be considered as the primary indicators of perceived value which positively influence tourists’ destination loyalty. It is worth noting that the direct effect value of cultural and heritage tourism motivation to destination loyalty through perceived value is greater than tourism motivation’s direct effect on destination loyalty. Therefore, some suggestions have been put forward for the sustainable development of cultural and heritage tourism in Macao. Firstly, attractiveness cultural heritage in Macao should be designed and highlighted according to tourists’ tourism motivation. Secondly, the unique value proposition should be proposed from different dimensions of tourists’ perceived value, allowing tourists to experience the differences of Macao from other destinations. Finally, great importance should also be attached to the management of tourists’ perceived value other than just continuously increasing the attractiveness of cultural heritage itself based on tourists’ tourism motivation, which has an indirect influence on destination loyalty to make publicity for the destination voluntarily of tourists.</p>
