Abstract Experimental studies of the subsonic combustion process have been conducted in order to determine the quality and economics of polyester, epoxy, urethane, and hybrid polyester-epoxy coatings. Thermally sprayed polymer coatings are of interest to several industries for anti-corrosion applications, including the infrastructural, chemical, automotive, and aircraft industries. Classical experiments were conducted, from which a substantial range of thermal processing conditions and their effect on the resultant coating were obtained. The coatings were characterized and evaluated by a number of techniques, including Knoop microhardness tests, optical metallography, image analysis, and bond strength. Characterization of the coatings yielded thickness, bond strength, hardness, and porosity.

Engineering characterization which are useful for "temperate" zone soils usually fail to predict the field performance of bauxitic soils, because the index tests upon which the characterization are based are not always reproducible for bauxitic soils. Fifteen (15) bauxitic soil of undisturbed and disturbed samples from 3 distinct sites in Kuantan, all derived from basalt parent rock but representing various stages of weathering were subjected to engineering and mineralogic tests. Values for cohesion and friction angles are evaluated. Soils from Semambu has the highest moisture content of 33.27%, the cohesion value is however lower compared to Bukit Goh which has moisture content of 21.74%. Study are further done to discover the relationship with cohesion and friction angles. Thus, by measuring the cohesion and friction angle can evaluate the performance of bauxite shear strength.

This paper studies the ductile iron (DI) weldability using laser welding. For performing an Yb:YAG continuous laser was used, with a maximum power of 6 kW. The parametrical window power (P) - welding speed (S) was explored by carrying out the fusion lines on ductile iron plates without preheating, to determinate areas of weldability (complete penetration, correct geometry) to allow further characterization. The criteria for selection of focus areas were the geometry of the fusion lines and the absence of the welding defects. The unsatisfactory domains were characterized by: collapse of the melted metal, incomplete penetration, low fusion lines quality (geometry, compactness). In present study, several values of power and welding speed have been tested to identify their influence on geometry, compactness of the joints and mechanical properties. As result, the power-welding speed diagram for feasible domains of laser welding was generated.
