Each year the editorial team of the American Journal of Health Promotion selects our “Best of the Year List” of health promotion studies from the prior year. This editorial features the Editor’s Picks Awards, the Editor in Chief Awards, the Michael P. O’Donnell Award and the Dorothy Nyswander Award for the research and writing published in 2021 in this journal. Our criteria for selection includes: whether the study addresses a topic of timely importance in health promotion, the research question is clearly stated and the methodologies used are well executed; whether the paper is often cited and downloaded; if the study findings offer a unique contribution to the literature; and if the paper is well-written and enjoyable to read. Awardees in 2021 offered new insights into addressing discrimination against race or sexual identity, preferred sources of information about COVID-19 and the impact of community and workplace interventions on healthy lifestyles. This year’s award winning research spans from character to culture relative to improving well-being.

Background: The choice of parents to be incorporated in hybridization is a crucial step for breeders for the improvement of complex quantitative characters, such as fruit yield and its components. It requires extensive and detailed genetic assessment of existing germplasm and newly developed promising lines. The magnitude and type of gene action serves as criteria for selection of parents, which after hybridization are likely to produce the best recombinants for desirable traits. Methods: Forty five bottle gourd genotypes comprising 36 hybrids and 9 parents were evaluated in four different environments. Genetic components of variation were estimated for 12 different characters including fruit yield per plant. Result: The additive as well as dominant components were significant for fruit yield per plant and its components, revealing equal importance of both additive as well as non-additive gene effects. However, fruit yield per plant is under the control of dominance variance. Over dominance type of gene action, considerable degree of gene symmetry over all the loci, excess of dominant alleles in parents and high narrow sense heritability was found for most of the traits studied.

Research relevance: this article is considering selection and organization of grammatical materials relevant in English language teaching. Research purpose: at incorrect interpretation of grammatical minimum content, students cannot fully assimilate the simplest and basic phenomena of morphology and syntax. In connection with this, determination of grammatical material quantity and content in a foreign language allows to increase the quality of learning. Research materials and methods: article analyzes differences between basic principles of selection of active and passive grammatical minimums and the criteria for selection of grammatical materials. Research results: there is requirement for teacher to choose a grammatical topic, ideologically relevant for students training and education. Conclusions: choosing a specific topic, students should be able to systematize their training from simple to complex, from simple to complex.

In the proposed article, an attempt is made to resolve one of the most pressing issues that arise when justifying the implementation of road construction projects on a concession basis. This is a question of state participation in co-financing the project. The task has a double limitation. On the one hand, the opportunities for state participation in such projects are limited by the financial resources of the State Road Fund. On the other hand, the state's participation is limited by the project's internal capacity to provide sufficient cash flow. The criteria for selection of projects implemented in the transport sector were studied. Additional requirements for the adequacy of expected cash flows have been formulated for projects that are expected to be implemented on a concession basis. The first step involves determining the creditworthiness of the project. The second is to ensure the required rate of return for private investors. The third step determines the need for state participation in co-financing the project and its respective share.

The purpose of this study was to identify changes in the center of pressure during stair ascending in subjects with chronic ankle instability while different angles of foot are applied. The subjects of this study were 20 male and female adults with chronic ankle instability were selected from among the employees of D Hospital in Daegu Metropolitan City. The criteria for selection of subjects with chronic ankle instability were those who felt wobbling in the ankle joint and scored not higher than 24 points in a test using the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT). The subjects carried out stair ascending in neutral, toe-in and toe-out postures, respectively, and changes in the center of pressure (COP) were compared and analyzed. The results of this study, no statistically significant difference appeared in the comparison between the toe-in posture and neutral posture or between the neutral posture and the toe-out posture but medial/lateral movements of the center of pressure showed significant differences between the toe-in and toe-out postures. In addition, the total travel range and the moving range of the center of pressure, the average velocity, and the anterior/posterior movements of the center of pressure showed no statistically significant difference among all three postures. As a result, it could be seen that when adults with chronic ankle instability climb the stairs, the toe-in posture reduce the medial/lateral movements of the center of pressure thereby increasing the stability of the ankle and effectively preventing re-injuries.

Introduction: Applicants to specialty programs lack guidance on knowing what exactly is desired by selection committees and program directors. Anesthesia is especially opaque, given its failure to provide transparency reports nationally. This study was developed to survey Canadian anesthesia program directors about the aspects of the application package desired in an anesthesia applicant. The primary objective is to identify the preferred attributes of anesthesia applications by those mandating the selection committees. Methods: Survey was developed via Google Surveys, and sent online over a period of two months in June and July 2020. All program directors were sent requests for filling in the survey. STATA was used for all statistical analyses. Two analyses, Mann-Whitney and ANOVA tests, were performed for comparison groups. A p < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Fourteen of seventeen (83%) Canadian anesthesia program directors completed the survey. Having done an anesthesia elective, good performance in it, and excellence of preclinical academic performance were considered among the most important aspects of the application package with the highest ranking important and smallest standard deviation. Any form of red flag was also considered an important criterion, again with little variation among program directors. The reference letters selected by the applicants were also important, with a personal relationship and well written reference being identified as most important (p < 0.05). Conclusions: An applicant who has good academic performance, having anesthesia elective experience, personal, well-written reference letters, and general activity and interests that are not necessarily anesthesia-focused would be favoured by Canadian anesthesia programs.

The paper considers some specific features in the lexicographic representation of neologisms in the academic neology dictionaries of the Bulgarian language. These characteristics are determined by the peculiarities of polysemy and synonymy in this type of lexis. The author discusses some problems in the lexicographic description of the semantic structure of ambiguous new borrowings and outlines the criteria for selection of a dominant synonym in a synonym group of neologisms.
