The undergraduate program at the University of Texas has grown into the largest astronomy teaching program in the world, with some 7000 students per year (almost 20,000 credit hours). The department has 22.5 Ph.D.-level teaching faculty, about 45 graduate students, and about 40 pre-professional undergraduate majors. But most of the enrollment is in courses that satisfy the science requirements of students in liberal arts and non-technical majors. In 1985–86, 96.4 per cent of our undergraduate credit hours taught were in such classes. It is instructive to examine the historical reasons for our growth and its educational consequences, and to draw some conclusions from both for other programs.

Adequate documentation of technical competence in surgery has come under increased scrutiny in recent years. The stipulation in the European Working Time Regulations of a 48-hour working week, an emphasis on operating room efficiency and concerns about medical errors and patient safety may limit the ability of a teaching faculty to provide graded responsibility with adequate skill acquisition in a surgical training programme.

Recent literature reveals that World Wide Web projects are beginning to receive more respect and acceptance from administrators. This survey studied the perceptions of librarian and teaching faculty Web creators in universities around the country to see if acceptance is on the rise. It found that respondents generally are satisfied with the recognition granted to their Web projects. Further findings indicate that institutional factors largely influence satisfaction levels. Librarians and teaching faculty can improve acceptance of Web projects only when submitting external reviews of their work to the evaluators.
