SummaryAs part of a population study on chronic lung disease in the Netherlands, an investigation is made of the relationship of both age and sex with indices describing the maximum expiratory flow-volume (MEFV) curve. To determine the relationship, non-linear canonical correlation was used as realized in the computer program CANALS, a combination of ordinary canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and non-linear transformations of the variables. This method enhances the generality of the relationship to be found and has the advantage of showing the relative importance of categories or ranges within a variable with respect to that relationship. The above is exemplified by describing the relationship of age and sex with variables concerning respiratory symptoms and smoking habits. The analysis of age and sex with MEFV curve indices shows that non-linear canonical correlation analysis is an efficient tool in analysing size and shape of the MEFV curve and can be used to derive parameters concerning the whole curve.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between getting quality awards by companies and their financial performance in Iran's business.Design/methodology/approachIn the first step, the relationship between awards scores and financial performance by canonical correlation analysis was examined. Then, binary and multinomial logistic regression was used to determine the degree of impact of each financial performance measure on getting quality awards. Finally, two forecasting functions were explored: the probability of achieving quality awards and the probability of achieving different levels of these awards.FindingsBased on the analyzed data of 112 companies through canonical correlation analysis, there was a weak relationship between financial performance and getting quality awards. Also, by using logistic regression, no result was found to prove the impact of financial performance measures on getting Iran's national quality awards. It can be concluded that conceptually, deployment of excellence organizational models will not result in favorable outcomes, especially in the financial scope. Also, practically, excellence models have not been well deployed in Iranian companies, or these models do not fit to Iran's business environment. Organizational culture may not be consistent with quality.Originality/valueQuality awards are given to qualified companies following the establishment of models of excellence such as the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM). The main novelty of this research is to clarify the relationship between getting quality awards by companies and their financial performance in Iran's business.

This study aims to present and examine the views among fishermen with different socio-demographic and socio-economic backgrounds (i.e., age, education level, annual income and source of income), fishing in four important inland fishing grounds in Turkey, namely Marmara Lake-Demirköprü Dam Lake (Manisa Province) and Eğirdir Lake- Beyşehir Lake (Isparta Province). The following key points are emphasized; a) Problems in inland fisheries b) Potential reasons of decrease in natural fish stocks c) Problem solutions and recommendations to improve the inland fisheries. The data obtained from a survey administered to 59 fishermen was evaluated using the Non-Linear Canonical Correlation Analysis method. According to the findings of the study: a) The most important problems encountered in fisheries; according to the fishermen with high education level, while the marketing and changes in the water level of the lakes, the fishermen with low education and income level, unlicensed hunting, the lack of punishment and electric hunting are problems b) Fishermen with a high level of education think that fishing with illegal fishing gears during the prohibited fishing season, and those with a low level of education and income are of opinion that small fishing is an important factor in the decrease of natural fish stocks c) Fishermen with high education-income sources adopt the idea of improving legal regulations and complying with them, whereas fishermen with a low-level of education and income think that problems in marketing should be eliminated as a solution to the problem in the fisheries. Results indicate that increasing the effectiveness of the practices that consider the opinions/suggestions of fishermen will contribute to the management and sustainability of fisheries in the region.

Gender equality corrresponds to equal rights and opportunities of individuals based on their gender. However, gender inequality refers mostly  lack of women’s  economic and political empowerment. Socially constructed different gender roles can be observed mostly in daily life.  Gender inequality  which can be perceived as an important social dynamic affects the happiness of individuals and hence  happiness of society. In this study, the relationship between the sub indicators of Gender Inequality Index and Happines Index for OECD countries have been investigated using canonical correlation analysis based on both pearson correlation matrix and  MM  covariance estimator. As is known, canonical correlation analysis explores the relationships between two multivariate sets of variables. Findings indicate that there is a strong correlation between Gender Inequality Index and Happines Index.

To determine the importance of genetic influence on the variability of maximum expiratory flow-volume (MEFV) curves in normal individuals, MEFV curves breathing air and a mixture of 80% helium and 20% oxygen (He-O2), lung volumes, specific airway conductance, and closing capacity (CC) were obtained in 10 pairs of identical and 6 pairs of nonidentical twins, all nonsmokers and asymptomatic. For a given pair of identical twins, MEFV curves on air were more similar than those of a pair of nonidentical twins (P less than0.02). The intrapair differences of identical twins were smaller than nonidentical twins of maximum expiratory flow (Vmax) at 60% of total lung capacity (TLC) on air (P less than 0.001) and on He-O2 (P less than 0.01). However, intrapair differences of Vmax at 40% TLC and CC were not significantly different in the two groups. Since Vmax at 60% TLC on air and He-O2 are dependent on the geometry of large airways these findings are suggestive that the geometry of large airways may be related to genetic factors. The relationship of the geometry of the peripheral airways and genetic factors has notbeen defined.

We explored the relationship between referral program involvement and the ego identity of online gamers. We recruited 429 participants who had used the World of Warcraft referral program to recruit a friend. The results revealed significant relationships between referral program involvement and ego identity, and three canonical factors were extracted. The first canonical correlation analysis revealed that higher overall referral program involvement is more likely to catch the attention of online gamers with ego identities that are aimless, disobedient, unsociable, or paranoid. The second canonical correlation analysis suggested that referral program involvement is positively associated with the ego identity factors of being self-willed or paranoid, and negatively associated with those of being aimless, multi-exploring, and having gender identity issues. The third canonical factor showed that those respondents with referral program involvement for exciting, fascinating, and appealing factors are positively associated with ego identity characteristics of liking challenges, being self-willed, and having gender identity issues.
