AbstractIn this work, the first results of the effects of temperature during the production of Se2- ions and the effect during the interaction of Cd2+ and Se2- ions in the synthesis process of CdSe nanoparticles are presented. The synthesis of CdSe was carried out by the colloidal technique, in the first one we used a temperature of 63 °C to produce Se2- ions and in the second one an interaction temperature of 49 °C. The samples were characterized using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM). From the SEM micrographs it was possible to identify the thorns formation and irregular islands. STM micrographs reveal elliptical shapes with a regular electron cloud profile.

Vibrational excitations of an isolated CO molecule adsorbed on a Cu(211) surface have been, for the first time, observed with a CO terminated scanning tunneling microscope tip. Both the frustrated translational and rotational modes were observed, and in agreement with the case of a metallic tip. The presence of a CO molecule on the tip, transferred by controlled vertical manipulation, strongly influences the frustrated translational mode of the CO molecule, while it does not affect the frustrated rotational mode. The present work demonstrates that scanning tunneling vibrational spectroscopy is also possible with a molecule at the end of the tip, opening new interesting fields of research and putting some more light on the still open question of inelastic tunneling and its selection rules.

Scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is a powerful and unique tool for study single molecules. We review recent advances in single-molecule characterizations including direct STM imaging and I–V spectroscopy, dI/dV spectroscopy and mapping, and d2I/dV2 spectroscopy and mapping. Some recent experiments of STM-excited single-molecule light emission are also introduced. In the final part, recent developments of single-molecule manipulation with the STM as well as the applications are discussed.
