Direct observation of room-temperature ferromagnetism of single-phase Ga0.962Mn0.038N by magnetic force microscopy

Abstract The electric conductivities of molten mixtures of aluminum chloride-butylpyridinium chloridecobalt chloride (AlCl3-BPC-CoCl2) were measured using a computerized direct-current method. The conductivities of all the melts increased with increasing temperature. The electrodeposition of Co/Al films from the AlCl3-BPC melt containing a small amount of CoCl2 has been studied by cyclic voltammetry. Compact and smooth Co/Al thin films could be obtained at a deposition potential of −0.4 V. The surface morphology and the composition of the electrodeposited thin films were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The magnetic properties of the deposited thin films have been investigated via magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). Higher magnetization and smooth domains of Co/Al layers could be obtained at the deposition potentials of −0.1 V and −0.4 V, respectively.

Optical and magneto-optical properties of GaMnSb layers fabricated on GaAs (001) substrates by laser ablation technique were studied using spectral ellipsometry (E =1.24-3.25 eV) and the transversal Kerr effect (TKE) (E = 0.5 4.2 eV) as well as atomic and magnetic force microscopy. Spectra of the constituents of the diagonal components of the permittivity tensor as well as TKE depended substantially on the layer fabrication conditions. At room temperature a strong resonant band was observed in the TKE spectra for the GaMnSb layers with low Mn content in the energy range E 0.5-1.5 eV. This resonant TKE band was explained by excitation of surface plasmons in MnSb nanoclusters, which arose during the growth of the layers. In the energy region E >1.5 eV the TKE spectra were related to interband transitions in MnSb inclusions.

A comprehensive study of the structure and phase composition, magnetostrictive and magnetic properties of the (Sm0.5R0.5)Fe2 (R = Gd, Tb) compounds was performed. The effect of partial replacement of samarium by gadolinium and terbium on the microstructure of the surface, the temperature of phase transitions, the magnitude of magnetostrictive deformations and magnetization was studied. Using atomic force and magnetic force microscopy, the surface topology at the micro and nanoscale was established, and information on the magnetic domain structure at room temperature was obtained.

ABSTRACTWe demonstrate Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) imaging, at room temperature in air, of a 0.25mA DC current path in a 140nm-wide gold nanowire. The nanowire was created by focused ion beam milling of a 12μm wide Cr/Au line of 20nm/110nm Cr/Au thickness. Iterative fitting of the MFM data to an idealized model of the structure yielded a nanowire resistivity a factor of 3.5 higher than that of a control Cr/Au region which was unaffected by the ion beam processing. MFM imaging of an ion-implant patterned line shows current deflection around the implant region.

It is shown by magnetic field dependent ac susceptibility, magnetic force microscopy, and ferromagnetic resonance that exposure of C60 to fluorine at 160°C produces a stable ferromagnetic material with a Curie temperature well above room temperature. The exposure to fluorine is accomplished by decomposing a fluorine-rich polymer, trifluorochloroethylene [F2C–CFCl]n, which has C60 imbedded in it. Based on previous experimental observations and molecular orbital calculations, it is suggested that the ferromagnetism is arising from crystals of C60–F.
