AbstractSoil drought is a major problem in plant cultivation. This is particularly true for thermophilic plants, such as maize, which grow in areas often affected by precipitation shortage. The problem may be alleviated using plant growth and development stimulators. Therefore, the aim of the study was to analyze the effects of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), zearalenone (ZEN), triacontanol (TRIA) and silicon (Si) on water management and photosynthetic activity of maize under soil drought. The experiments covered three developmental stages: three leaves, stem elongation and heading. The impact of these substances applied during drought stress depended on the plant development stage. 5-ALA affected chlorophyll levels, gas exchange and photochemical activity of PSII. Similar effects were observed for ZEN, which additionally induced stem elongation and limited dehydration. Beneficial effects of TRIA were visible at the stage of three leaves and involved leaf hydration and plant growth. A silicon preparation applied at the same developmental stage triggered similar effects and additionally induced changes in chlorophyll levels. All the stimulators significantly affected transpiration intensity at the heading stage.

In vitro embryo morphogenesis and micropropagation of Dendrobium aggregatum Roxb. were described. The gradual developmental stages of embryos to seedlings were traced out. Within two weeks of culture the cells of undifferented embryos underwent repeated aniclinal and periclinal division producing a compact, green parenchymatous cell mass called spherule that emerged out by rupturing the testa. The spherules subsequently differentiated into greenish protocorms were considered as typical seed germination. Germination occurred on both (MS and Phytamax (PM) medium but MS medium proved to be more efficient. The primary protocorms underwent profuse proliferation through production of secondary (2º) protocorms when transferred to different plant growth regulators (PGRs) supplemented MS; the medium fortified with 2.0 mg/l BAP and 1.0 mg/l NAA proved to be most effective for induction of 2º protocorms and seedling development. Multiple shoot buds (MSBs) were induced in pseudobulb segments of the in vitro grown seedlings when cultured on different PGRs supplemented media; and the maximum number of MSBs were obtained MS + 2.0 mg/l BAP + 0.5 mg/l picloram. The MSBs underwent elongation and then they rooted when they were transferred to half strength of MS + 0.5 mg/l IAA. The well rooted plantlets were finally transferred to outside natural environment with 80% survival. D. O. A 100-plot experiment was performed during the growing season of 1976 in a Ste. Rosalie clay soil, using a randomized complete-block design with 25 treatments of machinery traffic within each of four blocks. Three vehicle contact pressures, four numbers of tractor passes, before or after seeding groups and a control of zero traffic were used to relate the growth and yield variables to wheel traffic and resulting soil compaction. Plant emergence and tasselling were delayed with increasing machinery traffic. The plant growth rate monitored at 29, 44, 60, 74 and 88 days from the seeding time was dramatically different from plot to plot. Growth models at different times of the season were derived in terms of the product of contact pressure and number of passes of the vehicle. Plant and ear moisture contents were higher in plots with heavier traffic treatment. Yield, ear yield and grain yield all decreased with increases in machine contact pressure and passes. The reduction in yield was over 50% in some cases, suggesting that careful traffic planning is essential to obtain better production in agricultural fields. Prediction models were obtained for all the plant growth characteristics in terms of traffic variables for both before- and after-seeding treatments. A relation for yield in terms of soil bulk density was established.

A software application for the personal computer has been developed using the macro languages of Lotus l-2-3 Release 2.2 and the spreadsheet compiler Baler XE Release 1.0E to provide Easter lily (Lilium longiflorum Thunb.) growers with a tool to track and predict various developmental stages of the crop during greenhouse forcing.
