Flowering and fruit set in lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) in subtropical Queensland

The pattern of panicle and flower development of lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) trees was studied in subtropical Queensland (lat. 27�S.). The cultivars studied were Tai So at 3 sites, Bengal at 4 sites, Kwai May Pink at 2 sites, Salathiel at 3 sites, and Wai Chee at 2 sites. Tai So was the earliest cultivar, with panicle emergence in late May and flower anthesis in mid September. The other cultivars were 5-7 weeks later. Tai So had a longer period of flower anthesis than the other cultivars (4 weeks v. 1-3 weeks). Cultivars Tai So and Bengal generally had longer panicles than cvv. Kwai May Pink, Salathiel and Wai Chee (17-32 v. 10-14 cm), and more flowers per panicle (1800-3400 v. 400-900). Similarly, the number of fruit per panicle ranged from 7-33/panicle 2-3 weeks after the end of flowering, to 4-22/panicle at harvest. The proportion of female flowers setting fruit ranged from 2.1 to 19.5%. Similar estimates for fruit carried to harvest ranged from 0.8 to 6.8%. Variations in the times of panicle emergence, panicle development, and anthesis among the cultivars in relation to seasonal progressions in temperature affected the number of fruit set. The number of fruit set per panicle increased as the number of female flowers per panicle increased. Higher numbers of female flowers were associated with maximum temperatures during flower development of 18�C, with lower numbers at 23�C. Higher maximum temperatures during anthesis (30�C v. 24�C) increased the proportion of female flowers setting fruit.

The ability of lychee cv. Bengal (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) female flowers to produce fruit has been investigated within individual panicles. Female flowers were pollinated with pollen from the same cultivar or removed manually. These experiments showed that 13.3% of the flowers opening on the first three days of the female phase of anthesis produced fruit. This was significantly fewer than the 22.8% of female flowers opening 4 to 6 days after commencement of female anthesis. Only 9.2% of flowers produced fruit on panicles in which every female flower was pollinated and none removed. No panicle yielded more than 28 fruit. The variation in female flower fecundity within a panicle, and the decrease in the proportion of flowers that yielded fruit as the number of flowers pollinated per panicle increased imply that comparisons between different treatments to lychee flowers should be made on entire panicles and not individual flowers. There was no difference between replicates of treatments on the same tree nor in the performance of individual trees. The time of day that pollination was performed appeared to have little effect on the percentage of fruit retained. There was no obvious relationship between prevailing weather conditions on the day of pollination and fruit production.

Nine growth-regulating chemicals were sprayed at concentrations of 50 and 100 ppm on pickling cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L., cult Pioneer) in an effort to induce parthenocarpic fruit development. A morphactin formulation, IT 3456 (methyl-2-chloro-9-hydroxyfluorene-(9)-carboxylate), and TIBA (2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid) were the most effective in stimulating parthenocarpic fruit-set and development at both concentrations used. Between six and seven fruits per plant were induced parthenocarpically when 100 ppm IT 3456 morphactin was used. Two other morphactins tested, IT 3233 (n-butyl-9-hydroxyfluorene-(9)-carboxylate) and Bay 102614 (2,7-dichloro-9-hydroxyfluorene-carboxylate-(9)-methyl ester), produced no more fruits than the control. A new growth regulator, CCDP (3-carboxy-1-(p-chlorophenyl)-4,6-dimethyl-2-pridone), significantly increased the number of fruits per plant at the 100-ppm concentration, and also increased the number of female flowers per plant produced within 50 days of planting, at both concentrations. The other four compounds tested, designated EL 531 (α-cycloprophyl-α-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-pyrimidine methanol), BAS 0660-W (N-dimethyl-morpholiniumchloride), TD 692 (mono-("coco" dimethylamine) succinate), and Chemagro 8728 (5-chloro-2-thenyl-tributylphosphonium), were not effective inducers of parthenocarpy in the cucumber.

The floral development of Culcasia saxatilis, Culcasia tenuifolia, and Cercestis stigmaticus has been analyzed. These two genera possess unisexual flowers without perianth. In these species, the cylindrical inflorescence carry male flowers in the upper part and female flowers in the lower part. In C. tenuifolia, the separation between the female zone and the male zone is very sharp. There is no intermediate zone. In C. saxatilis and C. stigmaticus, we may observe rudimentary bisexual flowers between the two zones. In this intermediate zone, flowers located near the male zone possess male appendages more developped than those located near the female zone. On the other hand, the flowers located near the female zone possess female appendages more developped than those located near the male zone. The results suggest the existence of a morphogenetic gradient in the inflorescence of some species of Araceae. Keywords: morphogenesis, gradient, flower, development, inflorescence.

The effects of environmental factors, including chilling duration during dormancy and temperature during flower bud expansion, were studied on the following blueberry flower parameters: corolla length, corolla aperture diameter, stigma location relative to the apex of the corolla tube, position of the anthers relative to the stigma and to the apex of the corolla, and style length. Flowers on plants that were chilled over 1400 hours differed little from those that received only 310 chill units. Flowers that developed under warmer temperatures had significantly wider corolla apertures. In one experiment but not the other, corolla length and style length increased under warmer temperatures. For nearly every parameter in each of three experiments, there were significant environment × clone interactions. Overall, however, it appeared that neither lack of chill units during dormancy nor warm temperatures during flower development changed flower morphology enough to affect fruit set.

The effects of either foliar (1.00-4.00 g/L) or soil applications (0.25-1.00 g/m2 tree ground cover) of paclobutrazol, during autumn, on vegetative flushing and flowering of 3 lychee (Litchi chiriensis) cultivars (Bengal, Kwai May Pink and Tai So) were investigated over 3 years at 8 sites in subtropical southern Queensland. Cultivars at these sites varied in the level of vegetative flushing prior to panicle emergence in May-August and flowering in spring. Paclobutrazol reduced flushing and increased flowering in 5 out of 8 orchards, maintained dormancy and reduced flowering in 1 orchard, and had variable effects in 2 orchards, depending on the method of application. The maximum level of flowering in paclobutrazol treated trees occurred when the control trees bloomed moderately (40-60% of terminal branches). The responses were sometimes weak when the trees were very vigorous (<30% bloom). Paclobutrazol had no significant effect or reduced flowering of heavily blooming (70-100% bloom) trees. Paclobutrazol had only a small effect on panicle development, fruit set and fruit quality at most sites. Yield reflected the flowering response to paclobutrazol, except when yields were lowered by excessive male flowering or bird damage to the fruit.

Date palm is unisexual, being either male or female. Male and female flowers grow on buds called Spathe, which opens naturally when fully mature. It is easy to identify the male and female flowers. Under the method of manual pollination, pollen from a male flower is smeared over female flowers. The pollen variety and pollination time have important effects on date palm fruit set, yield and quality. This experiment was carried out to study the effect of date pollinizer variety and pollination time on fruit set, growth and development of Medjhol date palm variety, in date palm garden of date palm and tropical fruit research institute of Iran during three years from 2009 to 2011. The trail was randomized complete block design in factorial manner with three pollen variety as Ghaname, Vardy, and Samesmave, two pollination time as 1-3 days before or after spathe opening and four replication. The results showed that the Vardy pollen had significant effects and increased the fertility percent and fruit yield, rather than two other pollen varieties. The pollen variety had no significant effects on fruit quality as total sugar, acidity, and bricx. The pollination time before spathe opening significantly increased fertility percent, decreased fruit weight and date palm yield. Finally the pollen variety and pollination time interaction effects showed that, application of Vardy pollen from 1-3 days after spathe opening with the most production date palm yield, equal 19.9 kilogram per any date palm trees, so this treatment is the best and are recommended.

Fruit yield reduction due to high temperatures has been widely observed in Solanaceous crops. Our past experiments have demonstrated that Capsicum annuum cultivars Ace and Bell Boy completely fail to produce fruit when grown at constant 33 °C. However, flowers are produced, continually. To determine which stages of flower development are sensitive to high temperatures, pepper buds, ranging in size from 1 mm to anthesis, were exposed to high temperatures for 6 hr, 48 hr, 5 days, or for the duration of the experiment. Fruit set for each bud size was determined. Exposure to high temperatures at anthesis and at the 2-mm size stage for 2 or more days significantly reduced fruit production. To determine whether inhibition of pollination, inhibition of fertilization, and/or injury to the female or male structures prevents fruit production at high temperatures, flowers from pepper cultivars Ace and Bell Boy were grown until flowers on the 8th or 9th node were 11 mm in length. Plants were divided between 25 °C and 33 °C constant growth chambers for 2 to 4 days until anthesis. At anthesis, flowers from both treatments were cross-pollinated in all combination, and crosses were equally divided between 33 or 25 °C growth chambers until fruit set or flowers abscised. All flower crosses resulted in 80% to 100% fruit set when post-pollination temperatures were 25 °C. However, post-pollination temperatures of 33 °C significantly reduced fruit production. Reduced fruit set by flowers exposed to high temperatures during anthesis and pollination is not a result of inviable pollen or ovule, but an inhibition of fertilization or initial fruit development.

Elaeidobius kamerunicus is the main pollinating agent in oil palm plantations in Indonesia today. The development of oil palm plantations in new areas requires introduction of these insects, moreover the new areas are located on different islands. First introduction of Elaeidobius kamerunicus Faust had been done from North Sumatra to Seram Island on 23 September 2013. The introduction was performed on larva and pupa stadium in 4-5 days post anthesising of male inflorescences. The introduction of E. kamerunicus using plywood boxes has an average risk of death by 7.89% at 6 days delivery period. Observation before releasing of the weevils showed that this insect was not detected in both of oil palm male and female flowers and the oil palm fruit set was very low approximately 11.27%. For about 500 weevils/ha were released in Marnuhu estate and could be developed into 362,401 weevils/ha in 5 months with 97.86% of oil palm sex ratio. The oil palm fruit sets were increased after 1 and 2 months introduction, 53.70% and 75.56 %, respectively. The lower sex ratio of oil palm or the more availability of male inflorescences make growth of E. kamerunicus population became faster and the greater number of weevils that visiting anthesising of female flowers make the higher value of oil palm fruit set.

Anti-soluble substance antibodies and neutralizing substances, which develop following infection with the virus of lymphocytic choriomeningitis, appear to be separate entities. The times of appearance and regression of the two antibodies are different in both man and the guinea pig; the antisoluble substance antibodies appear earlier and remain a shorter time. Moreover, mice develop them but no demonstrable neutralizing substances. Injection of formalin-treated, virus-free extracts containing considerable amounts of soluble antigen fails to elicit anti-soluble substance antibodies and to induce immunity in normal guinea pigs; administration of such preparations to immune pigs, however, is followed by a marked increase in the titer of anti-soluble substance antibodies in their serum. On the other hand, suspensions of formolized washed virus are effective in normal guinea pigs in stimulating both anti-soluble substance antibodies and protective substances, and in inducing immunity to infection.
