Classification, reconstructed phylogeny and geographical history of genera of Pilipalpinae (Coleoptera : Tenebrionoidea : Pyrochroidae)

The 12 genera of Pilipalpinae are classified on the basis of characters of larvae and adults. Three new genera and six new species are here described: Malagaethes, gen. nov. (type species M. lawrencei, sp. nov.); Ranomafana, gen. nov. (type species R. steineri, sp. nov.); Binburrum, gen. nov. (type species Techmessa ruficollis Champion); Binburrum angusticollis, sp. nov.; Binburrum concavifrons, sp. nov.; Cycloderus immaculicollis, sp. nov. and Cycloderus hirsutus, sp. nov. The following new synonymies of specific names are proposed (with valid names given first): Paromarteon constans Lea, 1917 = Eucistela cyanea Carter, 1922; Paromarteon mutabile Blackburn, 1897 = Paromarteon mutabile var. nigripenne Lea, 1920; Temnopalpus bicolor Blackburn, 1888 = Temnopalpus tricolor Lea, 1920; Pilipalpus dasytoides Fairmaire, 1876 = Copobaenus maculicollis Pic, 1942 and Pilipalpus danvini Abdullah, 19646; Exocalopus pectinatus Broun, 1893 = Exocalopus antennalis Broun, 1903. The following subspecies have been elevated to species rank: Paromarteon apicale Lea, Paromarteon fasciatum Lea and Paromarteon parvum Lea. Phylogenetic analysis of 30 structural characters of larvae and adults yielded the following set of incompletely resolved relationships among genera of Pilipalpinae: (((Paromarteon + ((Temnopalpus + Malagaethes) + Pilipalpus + (Ranomafana + (Incollogenius + ((Exocalopus + (Binburrum + (Cycloderus + Morpholycus)) + Techmessodes) + Techmessa))))). The data set contained much homoplasy and several reversals. The historical geographical relationships inferred from the reconstructed phylogeny were compared with geological evidence for the break-up of Pangaea and Gondwanaland. The ancestral stock of Pilipalpinae was widespread on Gondwanaland, and differentiated through its fragmentation. Remnant relict genera persisted on Madagascar, New Zealand, southern South America (Magellanica), and Australia. Brooks Parsimony Analysis was conducted on the data resulting in the following area relationships: (Holarctic + (Madagascar + (New Zealand + (Australia + Chile)))). This agrees generally with accepted geological evidence and is considered support for they hypothesised phylogeny. A single clade (Temnopalpus + Malagaethes) was in disagreement (homoplasous) with the area cladogram, indicating possible incongruence in the data. The area relationships of other Southern Hemisphere groups were compared with Pilipalpinae.

An overview of the taxa of Rhinorhynchinae (Nemonychidae) is presented. A phylogenetic analysis of the 19 extant genera of the Rhinorhynchinae and one fossil genus from the Lower Cretaceous (Cratomacer Zherikhin & Gratshev), based on 29 characters of adults, larvae and host plant associations, shows three monophyletic groups, treated as tribes (Rhinorhynchini, Mecomacerini and Rhynchitomacerini). Primitive associations are unknown for Rhinorhynchinae and early host use diversification included associations with Ranunculaceae (Nemonyx Redtenbacher), Pinaceae (Cimberis Gozis), Nothofagaceae (Rhynchitomacerini) and Podocarpaceae (Rhinorhynchini). While Mecomacerini diversified on Araucariaceae, within Rhinorhynchini there was a single reversal to Araucariaceae and a shift in Atopomacer Kuschel to Pinaceae. Placement of Cratomacer into Mecomacerini is consistent with geological and molecular data that suggest gymnosperms may have been the primitive hosts for the family. Three new genera are described in Rhinorhynchinae: Araucomacer, gen. nov. (type species A. hirticeps Kuschel) from Chile, Idiomacer, gen. nov. (type species I. basicornis, sp. nov.) from New Caledonia, and Zimmiellus, gen. nov. (type species Z. fronto, sp. nov.) from Queensland, Australia, while Stenomacer Kuschel, stat. nov. from Chile is reinstated from synonymy. Seven species are described as new: Atopomacer grandifurca, sp. nov. from Costa Rica and Panama, A. obrieni, sp. nov. from Mexico, A. panamensis, sp. nov. from Panama, A. pini, sp. nov. from Mexico, A. podocarpi, sp. nov. from Venezuela, Basiliogeus dracrycarpi, sp. nov. from western New Guinea and B. inops, sp. nov. from Queensland. Rhynchitomacer rufus Kuschel is a new junior subjective synonym of R. nigritus Kuschel, syn. nov., R. viridulus Kuschel is a new junior subjective synonym of R. flavus Voss, syn. nov. and Stenomacer fuscus Kuschel is a new junior subjective synonym of S. vernus Kuschel, syn. nov. Keys to genera of Rhinorhynchinae and to species of Atopomacer, Rhynchitomacer and Stenomacer are included. Diagnoses of the three extant subfamilies of Nemonychidae are included.

A phylogenetic analysis of New Zealand weta from the sub-family Deinacridinae is presented. Eighteen species were studied using 27 genetic characters (allozyme and cytogenetic) and 25 morphological characters. The combined data set produced a phylogenetic hypothesis with twelve well-supported nodes. Despite the great diversity of habitats and life styles exhibited by the eleven Deinacrida White species a well-supported bipartition separates them from the seven Hemideina Walker species. Six of the Hemideina species formed a monophyletic clade, with respect to H. broughi (Buller). Evolution of stridulatory ridges used for sound production in both defence and intraspecific communication appears to have occurred at least twice. Adaptation to the recent New Zealand alpine environment has also had multiple origins. Biogeographic interpretations from the phylogenetic hypothesis are discussed.

Two new genera and four new species of the mite family Neopygmephoridae (Acari: Pygmephoroidea) are described from the alpine zone (1600–1900 m a.s.l.) of the Central Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand: Protobakerdania Khaustov and Minor gen. nov. with the type species Pygmephorus togatus Willmann, 1942, Neobakerdania Khaustov and Minor gen. nov. with the type species Neobakerdania pilosa Khaustov and Minor sp. nov., and the species Protobakerdania diseta Khaustov and Minor sp. nov., Troxodania minuta Khaustov and Minor sp. nov., and Bakerdania alpina Khaustov and Minor sp. nov. Eight species are moved to Protobakerdania Khaustov and Minor gen. nov. from Bakerdania Sasa, 1961: P. aperta (Rack and Kaliszewski, 1985) comb. nov., P. arvorum (Jacot, 1936) comb. nov., P. arvorum nodulosa (Mahunka, 1969b) comb. nov., P. baloghi (Mahunka, 1969b) comb. nov., P. crenata (Mahunka, 1969b) comb. nov., P. pristinus (Mahunka, 1968) comb. nov., P. randae (Sevastianov and Zahida Al Douri, 1989) comb. nov., and P. togatus (Willmann, 1942) comb. nov.

Vanuatu supports 11 resident species of the carabid beetle tribe Platynini: five indigenous species shared with other Pacific islands and Australia and six newly described precinctive species. Notagonum delaruei, sp. nov. represents a single descendant species of one colonisation event. Helluocolpodes, gen. nov. (type species Colpodes helluo Darlington of New Guinea) is proposed to accommodate a monophylum comprising the type species plus Helluocolpodes discicollis, sp. nov., H. mucronis, sp. nov., H. multipunctatus, sp. nov., H. sinister, sp. nov. and H. vanemdeni, sp. nov., all from Vanuatu. Generic assignments are informed by cladistic analysis of anatomical characters for a variety of Pacific platynine taxa. Metacolpodes Jeannel is redefined cladistically to include seven Pacific and Asian species. Biogeographic relationships among island areas housing platynine taxa on the Australian and Pacific Plates are investigated using a chrono–area cladogram, i.e. a taxon–area cladogram for which terminals are dated based on geological evidence and internal nodes based on non-reversible temporal optimisation. Conclusions reached by constraining the ages of areas within the context of phylogenetic relationships of their resident taxa include: (1) Vanuatu has supported resident platynine taxa since the Middle to Late Miocene; (2) the Hawaiian Blackburnia first colonised that archipelago in the Miocene, long before the present oldest high island, Kauai, came into existence; (3) the New Zealand Ctenognathus most likely arose from Miocene colonisation of New Zealand via Fiji; and (4) the low diversity of the Tahitian platynine fauna is due to relatively recent, Pliocene or later, colonisation of the Society Island chain by this group, also from a Fijian source.

A characteristic new species Meotipa sahyadri n. sp. with tall and white translucent abdomen in females is described in detail based on morphology of both sexes, based on specimens collected from the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa. The new species has epigynal projection which is known only in Meotipa picturata Simon, 1895, but differs in shape (trifid vs. quadrangular respectively). Males have longest straight embolus exceeding conductor length. Observations of its natural history are provided. Meotipa picturata is newly recorded from Goa, which extends its north-westward distribution from the previously known records from ‘Kodei Kanal’, India (type locality), Ratchasima Province, Thailand and East Kalimantan, Indonesia. A new combination Meotipa andamanensis (Tikader, 1977) n. comb. (=Argyrodes andamanensis) is proposed based on the comparison of description and illustrations provided in the original paper to that of the characters of the type species M.picturata. 242 morphological characters studied in the previous literature and one additional character ‘epigynal projection’ were scored for Meotipa sahyadri n. sp. and Meotipa picturata. These species were obtained monophyletic, placed within Theridiinae as sister to Chrysso cf. nigriceps using parsimony analysis and Bayesian inference.

Recently collected material as well as material collected in the 1960s of Zelandopsis aturoides Schwoerbel, 1984 shows that this species does not belong in Zelandopsis, but in a new genus described in this paper. Moreover, a new genus was found in recent material from New Zealand, i.e. Acidoturus n. gen., with the type species A. parviscutatus n. sp.. A new subgenus of Momonia, i.e. Zelandomomonia, is erected to accommodate M. hopkinsi Schwoerbel, 1984. Furthermore, a redescription is given for Zelandopsis morimotoi Imamura, 1977 and the first description is given of the female of Notohygrobates kathrynae Cook, 1983.

Two new genera, Plesiothele and Bymainiella, are erected to receive all the Australian species of the subfamily Hexathelinae, which now comprises four genera, including Hexathele with 20 species from New Zealand, and Scotinoecus with two species from South America. Plesiothele is a monotypic Tasmanian genus, type-species Hexathele fentoni Hickman, 1936. Bymainiella comprises 12 new species: B. boycei, B. boydi, B. brindabella, B. cannoni, B. grayi, B. lugubris, B. monteithi, B. montisbossi, B. otwayensis, B. polesoni, B. tubrabucca and B. variabilis; also B. montana (Hickman, 1927), and B. terraereginae (Raven, 1976), the latter being the type-species. The typespecies of Scotinoecus, S. cinereopilosus, is redescribed, and keys to the genera of the subfamily Hexathelinae, and to the Bymainiella species, are given. Two new indices are introduced to overcome the problem of bilateral variability. Bymainiella is believed to be the sister group of Scotinoecus.

This study represents the first phylogenetic reconstruction of lumbrinerid genera using parsimony analyses of 38 morphological characters. Following higher-level phylogenetic analysis, Oenone (Oenonidae) was selected as outgroup. The analysis was restricted to type species for each genus, yielded 24 equally parsimonious trees, which after successive weighting were reduced to one tree (CI= 0.7396). The topology of this tree revealed the separation of the family into four main clades: 1. Lysarete, 2. Arabellonereis, 3. Scoletoma, Lumbrineris, Hilbigneris gen. nov., Kuwaita, Lumbricalus, Sergioneris gen. nov. and Eranno, and 4. Abyssoninoe, Cenogenus, Lumbrinerides, Lumbrineriopsis, Augeneria, Loboneris gen. nov., Gallardoneris gen. nov., Helmutneris gen. nov., and Gesaneris gen. nov.; the position of Ninoe is unclear. A diagnosis of each genus is provided, including the description of six new genera and three new species. A key to lumbrinerid genera is included.

Two new genera of Eriococcidae, Intecticoccus Kondo and Orafortis Hardy, each with a new species (I. viridis Kondo and O. luma Hardy), are described and illustrated based on the adult females. I. viridis was collected on Nothofagus antarctica (Nothofagaceae) in Argentina and Chile, and O. luma was collected in Chile on Amomyrtus luma (Myrtaceae). Based on a phylogenetic analysis of SSU rDNA (18S) sequence data, I. viridis and O. luma are placed within the Gondwanan group of eriococcids (sensu Cook & Gullan 2004), which also includes other Nothofagus-feeding genera such as Chilechiton Hodgson & Miller, Chilecoccus Miller & González and Madarococcus Hoy. Major genera within the Gondwanan group that feed on other plant groups include Lachnodius Maskell, Opisthoscelis Schrader and some species currently assigned to Eriococcus Targioni Tozzetti. We consider that I. viridis and O. luma are each sufficiently distinct from other named taxa to warrant erection of two new genera. DNA data do not support a relationship of Chilechiton with the New Zealand genus Eriochiton Maskell. A revised taxonomic key to the adult females of Eriococcidae known from Chile is provided.

The type species of three little-known Tertiary bryozoan genera have been examined and redescribed. Victorian Bitectipora lineata, previously the only recognised species of Bitectiporidae, is shown to be related to a present-day New Zealand species which may now also be included in Bitectipora. Further, the family Bitectiporidae MacGillivray, 1895 is here considered to be a senior subjective synonym of Hippoporinidae Brown, 1952. Schizosmittina, a French Miocene genus, is confirmed to be congeneric with a suite of Holocene Australasian species and removed from the Smittinidae to the Bitectiporidae. However, on the basis of ovicellular morphology, both families are considered to be closely related. The scarcely used superfamily taxon Smittinoidea is re-established for those families with 'smittinid' ovicells (in contradistinction to 'schizoporellid' ovicells). The genus Stephanollona, based on a French Miocene species, is recognised to be a senior subjective synonym of Brodiella (Phidoloporidae), which includes present-day species from Australasia, South Africa, southern South America, Madeira, south-west Britain and the Mediterranean.
