Little Nourlangie Rock (12� 51' S., 132� 47' E.) is an isolated sandstone outlier of the Arnhem Land plateau, approximately 0.8 by 2 km in size and up to > 100 m above the surrounding plain. The climate is monsoonal. The habitat types studied are: closed forest, of either rainforest or evergreen open forest species; rocky crevices adjoining a flat sandy area covered in shrubs; a scree slope with open eucalypt forest; sparsely vegetated rocky slopes. Eighteen species of mammals were seen or trapped; of the resident rock-dwellers, Dasyurus hallucatus, Antechinus bilarni, Zyzomys argurus and Z. woodwardi were numerous enough for quantitative study.

Structural and floristic features of the rainforest-eucalypt forest boundary are described for two sites on the seasonally clouded eastern slopes of the Herberton Highland, north Queensland. Permanent sample plots, transects and canopy profiles were used to analyse variations across the narrow ecotone. The forest ecotone was found highly variable, spatially and temporally. Within rainforest, richness of woody species was maintained through to the closed forest edge. However, structural changes were more pronounced towards the boundary than were floristic variations and a fringe of immature rainforest varied in depth from 20-500 m. In the open forest margin, tall trees of Eucalyptus grandls were restricted to a narrow zone between the rainforest edge and the broad expanse of medium height Eucalyptus intermedia. Within this transition, young rainforest trees and some shrubs were observed, during a 12-year interval, to be establishing beneath tall E. grandis, displacing fire-prone grasses in the process. The distribution of old E. grandis within rainforest provides a record of recent boundary change. On evidence presented, the rainforest-eucalypt forest boundary is dynamic and parts of the rainforest are expanding due to favourable contemporary fire regimes.

Innisfail, a small coastal town in north Queensland, lies on the plain between the Atherton Plateau and the coastal hills, an area once covered with tropical rain-forest, but now extensively cleared for the growing of sugar cane. As part of an investigation of leptospirosis, small mammals have been collected, and mark-recapture experiments set up in areas sampling vegetation of different kinds. The species found comprised two monotremes, ten marsupials, nine bats (which were not collected intensively), nine rodents, and three other mammals. Some difficulty was experienced in distinguishing the local rodents, and a key to the species is given. This fauna could be divided into three elements: a rain-forest fauna of 14 species (excluding bats), a sugar-cane fauna of ten species, and a house fauna of four species. The sugar-cane fauna is shown to be derived, not from the rain-forest species, but from part of the fauna of the open forest which covers the hinterland, all the species being also recorded from New Guinea. The rain-forest fauna agrees with the list of species recorded from this part of Australia. A comparison is made with Malayan rain-forest, which is richer in mammal species. The niches corresponding to those of the nocturnal Malayan mammals seem well filled, but there is a deficiency of mammals corresponding to the diurnal species, such as monkeys, squirrels, and cattle, and also to the large carnivores.

The distribution and abundance of small terrestrial mammals were assessed in forest adjacent to powerline easements at three different sites in New South Wales. At each site, four transects of 300 m length extended into the forest from the edge of the easement. The abundances of two native species (Antechinus stuartii, Rattus fuscipes) did not differ significantly with distance from the easement but abundances differed markedly among sites. Mammals were captured in only one easement where dense vegetation was present. Feral carnivores, which may mediate edge effects on small mammals, were surveyed by using hair-sampling tubes. Cats and dogs were detected only 50–200 m inside the forest. Foxes were not detected by hair-tubes but were observed on two easements. These results suggest that powerline easements may not create edge effects in eucalypt forest for some native mammal species, although further studies are needed to determine the generality of this conclusion. We recommend that easement management should be more benign to native mammals, given the ubiquity of this form of habitat fragmentation. Promotion of dense vegetative cover and habitat linkages within easements could achieve this.

The relative abundance of small mammal species detected from Common Barn-owl pellets reflects the landscape structure and habitat pattern of the owl’s hunting area, but it is also affected by the size of the collected pellet sample and the size of the supposed hunting area. The questions arise: how many pellets should be collected and analyzed as well as how large hunting area should be taken into consideration in order to reach the best correspondence between the owl’s prey composition and the distribution of habitats preferred by small mammals preyed in supposed hunting areas? For this study, we collected 1045 Common Barn-owl pellets in a village in southern Hungary. All detected small mammal species were classified into functional groups (guilds) preferring urban, open, forest and wetland habitats. The proportion of functional groups was compared to the proportion of these habitats around the pellet collection site within circles of one, two, and three km radius. Saturation curves showed that at least 300 pellets or ca. 600 mammalian remains are required for the detection of the 19 small mammal species. The share of small mammals detected in the prey and their functional groups according to their habitat preference showed an increasing consistency with the distribution of real habitats in the potential hunting area of a radius of 3 km around the owl’s breeding or resting place.

Following a capture-mark-release program (February 1977-June 1979) on Dasyurus hallucatus, Antechinus bilarni, Zyzomys argurus and Zyzomys woodwardi, the study area was burnt to determine the effects of fire on these species. The area was described in terms of fuel characteristics and details of the fire were recorded. Post-fire trapping began July 1979 and continued until July 1980 (15,600 trap-nights). A. bilarni was the only species to suffer an increased mortality immediately after the fire, but the number of animals known to be alive declined over the year following the fire, for all species except D. hallucatus. The fire affected reproduction in all four species, but in different ways. Breeding in D. hallucatus was delayed by 1 month, and the mean number of young leaving the pouch per female was lower than before the fire. A higher number of resident females kept recruitment up. Litter size in A. bilarni was not affected, but a reduced number of resident females meant that recruitment was halved. Zyzomys argurus and Z. woodwardi showed few lactating and pregnant females in July-August following the fire, and the numbers of juveniles were lower than in the previous two years. Following the fire, no detectable differences in body weight were recorded, but all species except D. hallucatus changed their preferred habitat, moving to the Scree Slope. Z. woodwardi was most affected, and moved from the Closed Forest.

Before, during and after a clearing operation for pine plantation establishment, small mammals were trapped on ridges which were to be cleared of all vegetation, and in adjacent gullies which were to be permanently retained under native forest. Rattus fuscipes was the most abundant native species on all grids throughout the study, while R. lutreolus, Antechinus stuartii and A. swainsonii were in low abundance. Clearing in early summer, the breeding season in most of these species, resulted in an acceleration and accentuation of population turnover. Some juveniles and subadults may have moved from the ridges during clearing, while breeding adults remained and probably perished. Populations of R. fuscipes on ridge areas were drastically reduced by clearing and windrowing, but subadults recolonized the affected areas within 1-2 months. Results for the other three native species were inconclusive, due to the few individuals captured at any time during the study. The exotic species Mus musculus began to invade immediately following windrow burning.

The rufescent bandicoot is here recorded from four additional localities on Cape York Peninsula, extending its Australian range from the McIlwraith Range in the south to 'Somerset' in the north. Habitat types included gallery forest, low-layered open forest with vine forest elements, grassy woodlands,and closed heath.

Considerable variation in phyllode shape and size was found between populations of Acacia melanoxylon sampled over the wide geographical range (27° of latitude) of this species in tropical and temperate eastern Australia. Communities sampled range from closed-forest to open-forest and grassy woodland. Some evidence of relationships between morphological characters of the phyllodes and environ- mental conditions of the collecting site was found, although such relationships are complex and not easily understood. The most important factors determining phyllode shape and size were the distance of the collecting site from the coast, and the seasonal distribution of the annual rainfall. Phyllodes tended to be smaller and more symmetric in the drier inland areas. Differences were found between seed characteristics of selected populations, although there was no evidence of correlation of these with selected environmental parameters. Seedlings of 17 popu- lations of A. melanoxylon grown under uniform glasshouse conditions showed some differences in leaf morphology. The age at which conversion to phyllodes begins is correlated with the mean annual rainfall at the site of origin of the seeds. The occurrence of this species in such a wide variety of habitats in eastern Australia is probably due to its clinal variation.

[See also FA 39, 2088] A 2-yr trapping study was made on (a) Rattus fuscipes, (b) Antechinus stuartii, (c) Mus musculus and (d) A. swainsonii in mature eucalypt forest, a narrow stream-side strip of eucalypt forest, and in 3 pine plantations, 8, 22 and 42 yr old. In each area (a) and (d) were largely and (c) always confined to dense native vegetation along streams, whilst (b) was more frequent along streams than on slopes. More animals were found away from streams in young pine plantations than in other forest types.
