AbstractTaking into consideration two facts: that the structure of social life forces twins to part and that the presented roles in a pair are not equal, (one of the twins plays the role of a leader (L) and the other, the subordinate (P.)), one can ask the question — what meaning does the moment of parting have and what are its consequences?In order to do that, a survey was conducted, (a sample of 31 pairs of twins above the age of 30), in which every pair was asked the question: “Which one of you made the decision about parting?” The answer had two options: A – I, B – brother/sister. Out of 31 pairs of twins, 16 pairs chose the variant different from his brother or sister – that is A, B, admitting that the interpersonal conflict was the result of the parting. In 7 pairs, both twins chose the B variant – they withdrew from the conflict; and in 8 pairs they chose the A variant – looking for a compromise as the means of agreement.When analyzing the results of the survey, we can state the following:– in the relationship of twins, there is an interpersonal conflict;– the decision about parting is difficult with prevalent feelings of sadness and sorrow;– after parting, at least one of the twins has problems with preserving his identity and integrity of psychological space.Since the moment of parting is necessary and difficult, specialists and mainly parents are required to consciously change their position towards the relationship of twins. It has to be the result of applied educational methods which aim at creating subjectivity and equality of each of the twins before the moment of parting.

In real-life violence, bystanders can take an active role in de-escalating conflict and helping others. Recent meta-analytical evidence of experimental studies suggests that elevated danger levels in conflicts facilitate bystander intervention. However, this finding may lack ecological validity because ethical concerns prohibit exposing participants to potentially harmful situations. Using an ecologically valid method, based on an analysis of 80 interpersonal conflicts unobtrusively recorded by public surveillance cameras, the present study confirms that danger is positively associated with bystander intervention. In the presence of danger, bystanders were 19 times more likely to intervene than in the absence of danger. It extends this knowledge by discovering that incremental changes in the severity level of the danger (low, medium, and high), however, were not associated with bystander intervention. These findings confirm the importance of further investigating the role of danger for bystander intervention, in larger samples, and involving multiple types of real-life emergencies.

For many people, ‘Hong Kong is a cultural desert’. However, we find that Hong Kong plays an important academic role and acts as a cultural bridge between China and Western countries, especially when China experiences unstable political, economic, social and cultural situations. The People’s Republic of China was established in 1949. During this time, numerous scholars fled China and selected Hong Kong as a ‘shelter’. Some decided to stay for good, whereas others viewed the territory as a stepping stone. Regardless of their reasons, their academic performance has significantly influenced Hong Kong. Two of the most famous scholars in this period were Luo Xianglin (羅香林 Lo Shan Lin) and Qian Mu (錢穆). Luo taught at the Department of Chinese of the University of Hong Kong. Qian was a faculty member at the New Asia College, which was one of the founding members of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This study will examine the following issues: (i) why these two scholars selected Hong Kong, (ii) what role they played in the development of tertiary education with regard to Chinese studies in Hong Kong, (iii) how they developed the role of Hong Kong as a haven for the protection of Chinese culture and (iv) how Qian Mu developed New Asia College as a vehicle for spreading the ‘New’ Asian culture in the 1960s.

From the beginning of the 20th century onward, Freud’s writings concentrated on elucidating the common processes—repression, the unconscious, childhood sexuality, and the libido—that gave rise to both normal and neurotic phenomena. World War I then turned his attention to external traumas and the role of the ego in mediating between the conflicting demands of the id on one side and the superego and civilization on the other. Freud’s lasting contribution to thinking about mental illness was to successfully expand the range of disorders well beyond conditions thought to have an organic basis or the psychoses. Neuroses resulted from interactions between individuals and their human environments: no physical defect needed to be present. Psychiatrists came to have legitimate claims to treat distressing states that had previously been viewed as purely psychogenic in nature and therefore outside of the medical or neurological realm. Moreover, his blurring of the boundaries between the neuroses and normality created a zone of ambiguity that mental health professionals came to exploit. They came to treat a vast expanse of common occurrences including interpersonal conflicts, the psychic results of traumas, and everyday problems of living.

This paper examines the role that culture plays in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the People's Republic of China (PRC). Using examples of inward FDI from mostly western Multinational Corporations (MNCs), the implication of Chinese culture, Transaction Cost Theory, and modes of entry are discussed. The authors suggest that the increase in, and the rate of direct FDI in the PRC (prior to the current worldwide economic crisis) raises important issues with respect to employment and talent management issues and organizations would be wise to consider the mode of entry and management practices if they are to be successful in China.

The importance of principals to school improvement has been widely recognized, but few studies have focused on principals’ own perceptions of school change and their special roles in reform. This article reports findings from a comparative survey study of American and Chinese school principals’ basic beliefs regarding education and schooling, their views on school reform and the role of the principal in reform, and their visions of ideal schools in the 21st century. Although similarities exist in their perceptions, there are striking contrasts between the American and Chinese views and visions, which point to quite different directions and paths of reform in the two nations. While Americans are busy constructing common standards, developing and using more standardized tests for all students, and moving toward standards-based school reform, the Chinese seem to desire just the opposite—deconstructing uniform standards, moving away from the pressures of national exams, and focusing more on the interests and potentials of each individual student, a goal that has been largely ignored in the past in the Chinese culture and schools.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menggambarkan peran Paguyuban Tionghoa Purbalingga (PTP) dalam menjaga kebudayaan Tionghoa, khususnya tradisi Cap Go Meh. Sebelum  Paguyuban Tionghoa Purbalingga terbentuk, perayaan Cap Go Meh hanya dirayakan dalam lingkup keluarga dan di dalam rumah saja, akan tetapi setelah adanya Paguyuban Tionghoa Purbalingga tradisi ini dirayakan secara terbuka sehingga tidak hanya golongan Tionghoa yang merasakan akan tetapi juga masyarakat Purbalingga. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan lokasi penelitian di kabupaten Purbalingga. Menggunakan bentuk analisis interaktif, penelitian ini menghasilkan fakta-fakta sebagai berikut. Bentuk-bentuk pelestarian tradisi Cap Go Meh meliputi perlindungan, pengembangan, dan pemanfaatan tradisi Cap Go Meh. Makna tradisi Cap Go Meh bagi masyarakat Tionghoa Purbalingga adalah wujud syukur, dan sarana berkumpul. Tradisi ini mengandung nilai 8 Jalan Kebenaran bagi golongan Tionghoa sesuai ajaran Tridharma Tionghoa yaitu kesetiaan (loyality), integritas (integrity), kesopanan (propriety), kebenaran moral (righteousness), kehormatan (honour), bakti (filial piety), kebajikan (kindness), kasih sayang (love).The objective of this study is to describe the role of Chinese Society of Purbalingga (PTP) in conserving Chinese culture, especially the tradition of Cap Go Meh. Before the establishment of the Chinese Society of Purbalingga, Cap Go Meh was celebrated only in the sphere of family and home, but after the Chinese Society of Purbalingga was established, the tradition was celebrated openly so that not only the Chinese but also people of Purbalingga can feel its presence. The study method used is qualitative approach and the research sites is in the district Purbalingga. Using the form of interactive analysis, this research found the following facts. Preservation of Cap Go Meh tradition include these practices: protection, development, and utilization of Cap Go Meh tradition. The meaning of Cap Go Meh tradition for the Chinese community in Purbalingga is an act of gratitude, and means of assembly. Besides, this tradition contains the value of 8 way sof truth according to the teachings of the Chinese Tridharma, loyality, integrity,  propriety, righteousness, honor, filial piety, kindness, and love.

Under Dr Wang Feng's Harmony-Guided Criteria for poetry translation, this paper attempts to conduct an analysis on four English versions of Li Bai's "Drinking Alone under the Moon" at three levels, exploring the gains and losses of each version and verifying the guiding role of the Harmony-Guided Criteria in poetry translation. It aims to provide some inspiration and reference for poetry translators and promote the dissemination of classic Chinese culture at the same time.

The paper discusses the role of the principle of the number six in the Vedic corps of ancient Indian phi-losophy and in the philosophy of ancient China. It is shown that number, counting, numerology in the culture of Ancient India and Ancient China played an important, metaphysical role. It justifies why in an-cient Indian philosophy there could be exactly six darshanas, since they exhausted the body of Vedic philosophy (astics). The rest of the schools of an-cient Indian philosophy, therefore, could not claim the status of darshan. The special significance of the number six for Chinese philosophy is also asso-ciated with the presence of six schools and with the Yin symbolism. Since the link «yin» – «yang» is im-portant for the ancient Chinese culture, the number «nine» (the symbol «yang») also acquires special significance for the ancient Chinese culture. It is assumed that together the numbers «nine» and «six» in Chinese culture mean «the number of the Sage».
