Leisure boredom, leisure challenge, smartphone use, and emotional distress among U.S. college students: are they interrelated?

Background: Excessive use of smartphones may be associated with behavioral and physical health changes and might cause musculoskeletal alterations in the head and neck region. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of smartphone addiction in college students and its correlation with symptoms of head and neck pain and masticatory and trapezius muscle activity while resting, before and after smartphone use. Methods: Twenty university students participated in the study. They answered the Smartphone Addiction Scale and the Fonseca Anamnestic Index. Next, the participants were seated and prepared for electromyography through the placement of surface electrodes on the masseter, temporal, and trapezius muscles. Rest condition data were collected for 10 seconds before and after 30 minutes of smartphone use. Results: The results showed that 35% of the evaluated individuals were classified as smartphone addicted and 35% reported no head or neck pain in the previous 30 days. There was no association between smartphone use and head and neck pain. In the electromyography, there was an increase in RMS values after smartphone use in the right and left masseter muscles and the left trapezius. Conclusion: College students presented a high prevalence of smartphone addiction and head and neck pain, but these were not statistically associated. There was a change in muscle activity only in the right trapezius muscles before and after 30 minutes of smartphone use. These findings are contrary to the current belief that the use of smartphones correlates with pain in the neck region and changes in the electrical muscle activity, leading to fatigue in the cervical muscles.

ABSTRACTSmartphone is one of the telecommunication equipment, nowadays has become a must-have for everyone. Unfortunately, people do not realize that smartphone use have a negative impact in the form of nomophobia. Nomophobia is a person's anxiety if they cannot access their smartphone. College students are a group that can also be affected by nomophobia. This study aimed to find out the picture of nomophobia in final level students of FKM PSDKU Universitas Airlangga in Banyuwangi. The population used weres 41 people. The research design used descriptive quantitative studies with a cross sectional approach. The research was conducted by providing google form related to Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q). The results showed that students with the number of 4 people (9.76%) have mild nomophobia and 37 people (90.24%) have moderate nomophobia. The conclusion of the results obtained that all college students of the final level of FKM PSDKU Universitas Airlangga in Banyuwangi experienced nomophobia. It is recommended for students to increase physical activity and social interaction and set a daily schedule of activities in order to do more activities without using a smartphone.Keywords: Nomophobia, Smartphone, Final Students ABSTRAKPonsel pintar sebagai salah satu alat telekomunikasi, saat ini telah menjadi barang wajib untuk dimiliki setiap orang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui gambaran nomophobia pada mahasiswa tingkat akhir FKM PSDKU Universitas Airlangga di Banyuwangi. Jumlah populasi yang digunakan adalah sejumlah 41 orang. Desain penelitian menggunakan studi deskriptif kuantitatif dengan pendekatan cross sectional. Penelitian dilakukan dengan memberikan google form terkait Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q). Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa dengan jumlah 4 orang (9,76%) mengalami nomophobia ringan dan 37 orang (90,24%) mengalami nomophobia sedang. Kesimpulan dari hasil yang didapatkan bahwa seluruh mahasiswa tingkat akhir FKM PSDKU Universitas Airlangga di Banyuwangi mengalami nomophobia. Disarankan terhadap mahasiswa untuk memperbanyak aktivitas fisik dan interaksi sosial serta mengatur jadwal kegiatan harian agar dapat lebih melakukan aktivitas tanpa menggunakan ponsel pintar.Kata Kunci: Nomophobia, Ponsel pintar, Mahasiswa tingkat akhir.

BACKGROUND Nomophobia an abbreviation for “no-mobile phone phobia” is a fear of being out of mobile phone contact. We wanted to assess the prevalence of nomophobia, knowledge regarding smartphone use, and effect of using smart phones among college students. METHODS A descriptive study was conducted among 250 college students who were perceiving bachelor’s degree in arts in selected colleges of district Fatehabad, Haryana. Nomophobia scale, structured knowledge questionnaire, and checklist were used to collect data. The collected data was statistically analysed by using SPSS Ver. 23. RESULTS The study findings reveal that majority, 140 (56.0 %) of samples have moderate levels of nomophobia. 203 (81.2 %) samples have good knowledge level regarding smartphone. Majority, 188 (75.2 %) of samples had moderate level of effect on their life due to smartphone use. There is significant association between level of nomophobia of samples with years of using mobile phone and frequent reason of using mobile phone. There is significant association between level of knowledge of samples with their age and their education level. There is positive correlation between level of nomophobia and effects of using smart phone among college students. There is negative correlation between level of knowledge and effects of using smart phone. CONCLUSIONS The study findings provide statistical evidence which clearly indicates that there is prevalence of nomophobia and adverse effects of using smartphone on their life. This study investigates the effects of psychological traits (i.e., procrastination, leisure boredom, and impulsivity) and addiction symptoms on problematic smartphone use. Data were collected from a multistage random sample of 649 university students. The results showed that procrastination, impulsivity [including sensation seeking and (lack of) perseverance], symptoms of addiction (e.g., inability to control craving, withdrawal, and complaints), and frequent usage of smartphone features for instrumental, relational, expressive, and informational purposes were significant predictors of problematic smartphone use.

This study investigated the relationships between perceived social network sites (SNS)-game addiction and gratifications, loneliness, leisure boredom, self-esteem, and usage of SNS-games. Data were gathered from a sample of 342 college students aged 18 to 22 in mainland China. Factor analysis yielded a three-factor gratifications structure (achievement, inclusion, and entertainment) based on the 11 motives for playing an SNS game obtained in a focus group. As hypothesized, loneliness and leisure boredom were found to be significant predictors of the level of SNS-game use and likelihood of addiction. SNS-game addicts tended to be male, lonely, often leisurely bored, and motivated by winning virtual money and gaining a sense of achievement. However, self-esteem was not a significant predictor. Implications for university administrators and suggestions for future research were discussed.
