This paper presents a 3D model that simulates an ultrasonic shot peening (USP) operation, using realistic process parameters and peening setups (part and chamber geometries). By simulating the shot dynamics (shot trajectories and impacts), statistical and spatial data are obtained for the peened component, i.e. surface coverage and coverage rate, impact speeds and angles, dissipated energy... This data can then be used for i) optimizing the design of peening chambers and process parameters and ii) predicting the residual stress and displacement fields induced by USP in the peened component. In fact, data from the 3D model can be used as initial data in existing residual stress prediction models. A chaining methodology was developed for this purpose and allows linking the choice of process parameters and USP setup to the induced residual stress displacement fields.

Finite element weld residual stress modelling procedures involve complex non-linear analyses where many assumptions and approximations have to be made by the analyst. Weld modelling guidelines for inclusion in the R6 defect assessment procedure are in preparation and will be accompanied by a series of validation benchmarks that can be used to evaluate the accuracy of weld modelling procedures and assess their suitability for use in fracture assessments. It is intended to base one of the benchmarks on a stainless steel bead-on-plate weldment that has been extensively studied by members of Task Group 1 of the NeT European Network project. This paper uses round robin residual stress measurements from the NeT project to derive a statistically based ‘best estimate’ distribution of transverse stress passing through the wall-section at mid-length of the bead-on-plate weldment. The accuracy of a state-of-the-art residual stress prediction is benchmarked against the best estimate measurements using a root mean square error analysis and comparisons of decomposed components of stress. The appropriateness of using the predicted residual stresses in fracture assessments is assessed by comparing stress intensity factors based on the measured and predicted distributions of stress. The results from these studies will be used to help establish accuracy targets and acceptance criteria for the welding benchmark.

The paper deals with the effect of different shot peening (SP) treatment conditions on the ENAW 7075-T651 aluminium alloy. Suitable residual stress profile increases the applicability and life cycle of mechanical parts, treated by shot peening. The objective of the research was to establish the optimal parameters of the shot peening treatment of the aluminium alloy in different precipitation hardened states with regard to residual stress profiles in dynamic loading. Main deformations and main residual stresses were calculated on the basis of electrical resistance. The resulting residual stress profiles reveal that stresses throughout the thin surface layer of all shot peened specimens are of compressive nature. The differences can be observed in the depth of shot peening and the profile of compressive residual stresses. Under all treatment conditions, the obtained maximum value of compressive residual stress ranges between -200 MPa and -300 MPa at a depth between 250 μm and 300 μm. Comparison of different temperature-hardened aluminium alloys shows that changes in the Almen intensity values have greater effect than coverage in the depth and profile of compressive residual stresses. Positive stress ratio of R=0.1 was selected. Wöhler curves were determined in the areas of maximum bending loads between 30 - 65 % of material's tensile strength, measured at thinner cross-sections of individual specimens. The results of material fatigue testing differ from the level of shot peening on the surface layer.

This paper reports the effectiveness of residual stress fields induced by laser shock peening (LSP) to recover pristine fatigue life. Scratches 50 and 150 μm deep with 5 μm root radii were introduced into samples of 2024-T351 aluminium sheet 2 mm thick using a diamond tipped tool. LSP was applied along the scratch in a band 5 mm wide. Residual stress fields induced were measured using incremental hole drilling. Compressive residual stress at the surface was-78 MPa increasing to-204 MPa at a depth of 220 μm. Fatigue tests were performed on peened, unpeened, pristine and scribed samples. Scratches reduced fatigue lives by factors up to 22 and LSP restored 74% of pristine life. Unpeened samples fractured at the scratches however peened samples did not fracture at the scratches but instead on the untreated rear face of the samples. Crack initiation still occurred at the root of the scribes on or close to the first load cycle in both peened and unpeened samples. In peened samples the crack at the root of the scribe did not progress to failure, suggesting that residual stress did not affect initiation behaviour but instead FCGR. A residual stress model is presented to predict crack behaviour in peened samples.

Residual stress prediction contributes to nuclear safety by enabling engineering estimates of component service lifetimes. Subcritical crack growth mechanisms, in particular, require residual stress assumptions in order to accurately model the degradation phenomena. In many cases encountered in nuclear power plant operations, the component geometry permits two-dimensional (i.e., axisymmetric) modeling. Two recent examples, however, required three-dimensional modeling for a complete understanding of the weld residual stress distribution in the component. This paper describes three-dimensional weld residual stress modeling for two cases: (1) branch connection welds off reactor coolant loop piping and (2) a mockup to demonstrate the effectiveness of the excavate and weld repair process.

The solution treatment and solution and aging treatment (T6) were disposed on 7050 aluminium alloy, then local processed by laser shock processing (LSP) with high-rate neodymium glass laser. The microhardness and residual stress on the surface of 7050 aluminium alloy were tested, then how the microstructure influences the residual stress on the surface of 7050 aluminium alloy by laser shock processing was analysed. The results show that the microhardness and residual compressive stress on the surface of 7050 aluminium alloy treated by solution and aging treatment was higher, and decreased obviously treated by solution treatment; the microhardness and residual compressive stress on the surface of 7050 aluminium alloy increased obviously by solution treatment and solution and aging treatment after laser shock processing; treated by solution treatment and solution and aging treatment, the microhardness and residual compressive stress of the material with uniform original structure was higher than the material with nonuniform original structure.
