Academic librarians have always played an important role in providing research services and research-skills development to faculty in higher education. But that role is evolving to include the academic librarian as a unique and necessary research partner, practitioner, and participant in collaborative, grant-funded research projects. This article describes how a selected sample of Canadian academic librarians became embedded in faculty research projects and describes their experiences of participating in research teams. Conducted as a series of semistructured interviews, this qualitative study illustrates the emerging opportunities and challenges of the librarian-researcher role and how it is transforming the Canadian university library.

There are many ways for an academic librarian to contribute to the teaching and learning mission of an institution ranging from direct instruction to assignment design. Given this plethora of information literacy educational practices, what should academic librarians and educators focus time, labor, and resources on, and why should they do so? With an eye towards improving information literacy educational practice and addressing these fundamental questions, we examine the foundational philosophical commitments of two information literacy theories, Critical Information Literacy and Informed Learning. We find that these information literacy theories may be biased towards a 20th-century European worldview. This finding supports the idea that “good” IL educational practice in higher education requires active engagement with information literacy theory to justify what one does as an educator and to demonstrate why information literacy can be integral to learning in higher education.

Objective - This paper identifies entrepreneurial competencies and the outcomes measured as innovative behaviour demonstrated by academic librarians. Methodology/Technique - – we sought through interviews the interpretation and viewpoints of the academic librarians which we consider vital data when exploring entrepreneurial competencies and innovative behaviour in the three academic libraries. Findings - we discovered that the antecedents of entrepreneurial competencies include recognizing opportunities, initiating innovation and strategic thinking. These antecedents influence academic librarians' innovative behaviour which was evaluated based on idea generation, idea championing and idea implementation. Novelty - This study explores entrepreneurial competencies and innovative behaviour in Malaysian research universities. While often overlooked, there are many benefits of in-house professional development programs for academic librarians. This is especially true as the roles of academic librarians continue to evolve and change. This chapter argues that internal professional development not only helps academic librarians share their varied skills, tools, and practices with institutional colleagues, but also improves employee morale, collegiality, and organizational culture. Additionally, by structuring an internal professional development program using a peer-learning model, librarians gain a sense of community while seeing value in each librarian's individual knowledge. Also, peer learning can be a mechanism for institutional knowledge management and the transfer of institutional memory through intergenerational and cross job function learning. In addition to exploring the evolving nature of the academic librarian and the importance of professional development as peer learning in the context of the local institution, this chapter will describe in detail one university library's internal professional development program for librarians.

This chapter investigates the intersection of instructional design and implementation, blended learning, ICT literacy, and academic librarians within higher education. Using the TPACK, pedagogy 2.0, and community of inquiry models, the chapter explains how librarians can help academic instructors design blended courses that effectively address physical and intellectual access to a wide variety of resources, especially digital materials, in order to optimize student learning.

The academic library profession is being redefined by the shifting research and scholarly landscape, the transformation in higher education, and advances in technology.A survey of librarians working in Canada’s research-intensive universities was conducted to explore new and emerging roles. This study focuses on librarians’ activities in: Research Support, Teaching and Learning, Digital Scholarship, User Experience, and Scholarly Communication. It addresses the scope and nature of the new roles, the skills required to provide new services, and the confidence librarians have in their abilities to perform the new roles. It also reports on librarians’ job satisfaction and their perceived impact on the academic enterprise.

ABSTRACT:  The creation of academic libraries was a fundamental element in the rapid growth of higher education and mature literary culture in the United States at the end of the 19th century. This was the period when college and university libraries began their transformation from minor book depositories into centers of information. Southern colleges too were part of this transition and began developing their libraries and using full-time librarians during the Gilded and Progressive Eras.  Southern libraries, however, have seldom been studied on a consistent basis. This talk will explore the growth of academic libraries and the spread of academic librarians in the Southeast during this period.  These libraries, while remaining limited in size and numbers compared to those in other parts of the country, were quite aware of changes and attempted to keep up with professional growth.

This paper deals with the role of academic librarians in higher education program. The focus ofthe study is to explain the roles of academic librarians as research partner in the higher educationprograms. Based on the analysis of the literatures, it was found that academic librarians have astrategic role in successing the research program. There are three main roles of academic librariansin the research activities, that are providing information research services, conducting research skillstraining, and assisting academic members in publishing and disseminating the research findings.Furthermore, the Librarians serve and assist the researchers individually in performing the researchactivities, as well as arrange and implement programs in groups or classes program in teachingresearch skills through information literacy program. Through the teaching of information literacy,the academicians are provided the ability to identify the sources of information, the ability to searchinformation, and the ability to manage the citations.
