Abstract One of common methods of determining landscape change usually is to compare maps and photographic images of the same places in different time horizons. Landscape painting, which has a long and rich tradition in the Czech Republic, can be used similarly. Landscape-ecological interpretation of selected works by painters of the 19th century - Julius Mařák, František Kaván and Antonín Slavíček was done in this paper. Some pictures of the Českomoravská vrchovina (Bohemian-Moravian highlands) by Josef Jambor from the mid-20th century were used for detailed comparative analysis to the level of habitats. We compared 80 landscape paintings and found that most of the painted sceneries have changed for worse.

Huntington's disease is one of nine neurodegenerative diseases caused by a polyglutamine (polyQ)-repeat expansion. An anti-polyQ antigen-binding fragment, MW1 Fab, was crystallized both on Earth and on the International Space Station, a microgravity environment where convection is limited. Once the crystals returned to Earth, the number, size and morphology of all crystals were recorded, and X-ray data were collected from representative crystals. The results generally agreed with previous microgravity crystallization studies. On average, microgravity-grown crystals were 20% larger than control crystals grown on Earth, and microgravity-grown crystals had a slightly improved mosaicity (decreased by 0.03°) and diffraction resolution (decreased by 0.2 Å) compared with control crystals grown on Earth. However, the highest resolution and lowest mosaicity crystals were formed on Earth, and the highest-quality crystal overall was formed on Earth after return from microgravity.

Abstract This article reconstructs and compares photographic perspectives on the historical phenomenon of preparing German-Jewish youth for emigration from Germany, and their subsequent training in Palestinian kibbutzim in the framework of the hachshara and the youth aliyah. It considers the photographers’ status, differentiating between professional photography and the work of amateurs, and investigates the use and addressees of these images. The image analysis that underlies this study examines facets of the photographic and pictorial conception of chalutzian youth, including motifs, style, and atmospheres. In the process, photography is classified as a unique historical image source, in which the conditions of the time inscribe themselves even beyond personal and political intentions, interests, and contexts of usage. The image analysis also aims to reconstruct the specific, visually represented individual and collective experiences of the producers and addressees of photographic images in Germany and Mandatory Palestine.

Photography is historically used to display architectural works to distant audience. Digital media, mainly the Internet, have expanded the distribution of images, especially through the websites of architecture offices, which found a handy tool for the dissemination of its portfolio. The perception of the resulting image from the photographic registration technique varies depending on the means it is presented, either digital or analogical. This finding led the investigation presented in this article: How architecture design companies present photographic images to promote their work through electronic portfolios? Is there any strategy that prevails? These questions inspired a research that analyses the architectural photographs digitally presented by Brazilian contemporary architecture offices. The goal is to build a diagnosis of the use of photography on their website by identifying recurrent strategies and techniques. This article presents the examination of photographic images displayed in the Jacobsen Architecture office site, which is relevant in the contemporary Brazilian scene. Procedures consisted of bibliographical and documentary researches, followed by analysis. The literature was addressed to the architectural photography. The documentary research explored all the photographs available on the office's website, totalling 418. It was established 25 objective parameters, which were recognized in each image, and the data were tabulated. The operation of the entire universe of data allowed the statistical and comparative analysis. The result identifies the most common practices and the nature of the photographic image from that office.
