Thermochromic (TC) pigments offer significant potential for functional and aesthetic design of smart textile materials. In this study, TC (blue and red) pigments were applied to cotton fabrics and printed on especially designed childrenswear by flat screen printing technique. The antibacterial and ultraviolet protection functionalities have been implemented into the fabrics under study by using selenium nanoparticles. The factors affecting the printing process were studied and the optimum formula was screen printed to produce the pattern’s designs of childrenswear. After conducting several tests, the results showed a significant color-changing effect depending on temperature, the color fastness properties to light, wash, and rubbing were excellent. Antibacterial activity of printed fabrics was very good against Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli bacteria and the anti-ultraviolet protection was found to be very good. The printed fabrics can be as protective childrenswear as shown in this work.

The textile protection of human skin against ultraviolet radiation is very important problem and over recent years researches have shown increasing interests in this area. This research work deals with the causing harm effects of ultraviolet rays and protection against them through the woven materials by using Opuntia littoralis herbal extract and Chitosan biopolymer extract with nano encapsulation method. Finishing of fabric with an eco friendly manner is getting very advanced nowadays. So, this research work is fully based on ecofriendly and skin friendly. The samples were imparted with herb and biopolymer nanocapsules which showed best results for ultraviolet protection even after 30 washes. The finished sample was analyzed for its morphology using FESEM and FT-IR.

We reported previously that treatment of polyamide 66 with a mixture of CaCl2/EtOH/water results in a significant increase of surface roughness. A higher surface roughness is correlated with greater light scattering propensity, and therefore we investigated if polyamide 66 fabrics treated with the mixture exhibit lower ultraviolet (UV) transmission. The work was performed on a commercially available plain-woven polyamide 66 fabric, and the UV protection factor (UPF) increased from a value of 25 (of the fabric as received) to >100 (after a 1-min treatment with the mixture). There was no significant change in cover factor of the fabric. As the solvent mixture is environmentally benign and the desired effects are obtained with short treatment times, we believe this process may be a more sustainable alternative to the use of UV absorbers that is the state-of-the-art technology at the present time. In this paper, we have described the treatment and its effects on substrate topography and mechanical properties.

Ultraviolet radiation is divided into UV-A (320–400nm), UV-B (290–320nm), UV-C (under 290nm). Of these, UV-B may be cause serious health problem, such as cataracts, loss of skin immunity, and increase of skin cancer. For this reason, it is important to know how to protect human body against the UV-B radiation. Beach shade is very effective to prevent the radiation. The radiation enters to the shade from sun and sky. The first step is to measure the sky radiance distribution of sun and sky radiation spectrum. We calculate erythema action radiation from the radiation spectrum. Sunburn chart is made using distribution of the erythema action ultraviolet radiation. Using the Sunburn chart, the shade is designed for protect against the UV radiation.

Graphene and its derivatives have shown outstanding potential in many fields and textile/composites industry are not an exception. Giving their extraordinary properties, Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNPs) are excellent candidates for providing new functionalities to fibers and composites. In this work, natural fabrics (flax) were functionalized with chitosan (CS) based polymeric formulations of GNPs to develop fibrous systems with electrical properties as well as other functionalities. One of the greatest disadvantages of using carbon-based materials for fabrics’ impregnation is their difficult dispersion. Therefore, several polymers were used as matrices, binding and dispersive agents including chitosan, polyethylene glycol (PEG), and glycerol. All the systems were characterized using several techniques that demonstrated the presence and incorporation of the GNPs onto the composites. Besides their characterization, considering their use as smart materials for monitoring and sensing applications, electrical properties were also evaluated. The highest value obtained for electrical conductivity was 0.04 S m−1 using 2% of GNPs. Furthermore, piezoresistive behavior was observed with Gauge Factor (GF) of 1.89 using 0.5% GNPs. Additionally, UV (ultraviolet) protection ability and hydrophobicity were analyzed, confirming the multifunctional behavior of the developed systems extending their potential of application in several areas.
