There is an increasing attention being accorded to mobile marketing activities in recent business management literature in the past decade as both academicians and practitioners recognize that mobile activities have potential influence on mobile marketing acceptance and customer purchase intention. Notwithstanding this, there is dearth of research on the same in the African context. In view of this development, the purpose of this research paper is to investigate the extent to which mobile marketing activities influence customers mobile marketing acceptance and their purchase intention in South Africa. Five research hypotheses are postulated and using data collected from mobile marketing activities partakers, the hypotheses are tested using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) approach (Smart PLS). Managerial implications of the findings are discussed and limitations and future research directions are indicated.

The study examined the influence of South African consumers’ attitudes and purchase intention towards Chinese apparel. A survey of South African consumers who had purchase experience of Chinese apparel was conducted to test the hypothesised relationships. Structural equation modelling results indicated that economic animosity and consumer ethnocentrism are negatively related to attitudes towards Chinese apparel and consumer purchase intention. The study revealed a significant, positive relationship between cosmopolitanism, attitudes towards Chinese apparel and consumer purchase intention. In addition, the findings of the study suggest the importance of cosmopolitanism, consumer ethnocentrism and animosity in market segmentation, targeting, positioning and market potential analysis. The study provides managerial implications for the marketing of Chinese apparel in South Africa.

AbstractHousehold appliances are the biggest contributor to household energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. One of the ways to reduce emissions and conserve energy is to increase the use of energy-efficient appliances (EEAs). Based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), the study investigated the factors that influence the purchase of EEAs by young consumers in South Africa. Young customers are the customers of tomorrow and can help to prevent global ecological collapse through sustainable consumption. The study extended the TPB by adding two individual constructs (moral norms and environmental concern) and two situational constructs (informational publicity and perceived benefits). In addition, the study examined the effect of purchase intention on purchase behavior. The cross-sectional survey method was used for data collection in the quantitative study. Data was collected from final year undergraduate students at two South African universities. The results indicated that the extended TPB model can be used to predict the purchase intention of EEAs. Also, purchase intention positively affects purchase behavior. Theoretically, the study extended the TPB to create a unique model of intention to purchase EEA. Practical suggestions focus on what business and government should do to improve the purchase of EEA.

Celebrity endorsement is the most used strategy since consumers value celebrities in advertisements. Organizations invest in celebrity endorsements in the expectation that they will enhance consumer perception of a product or service, evoke favorable attitudes toward a brand, influence purchase intentions, and eventually increase sales and profits through increased consumer preference for a product, brand, or service. This paper examines the effect of endorser characteristics on purchasing intentions in South Africa. The survey sampled South Africans residing in Gauteng Province. The Qualtrics questionnaire was completed by 145 respondents ranging in age from 18 to 55 and living in various areas of Gauteng Province. Given the research objective, the paper analyzed only responses from participants who stated that they had been exposed to celebrity-related adverts. The findings show that these respondents saw advertisements featuring celebrities. To evaluate the hypotheses, regression analysis was performed. The results reveal that consumer behavior, such as purchase intention, is influenced by attractiveness (β = .271; p < 0.05) and attitudes (β = .520; p < 0.05). However, in this study, expertise (β = .089; p > 0.05) and trustworthiness (β = –.095; p > 0.05) were not related to purchase intentions. Understanding celebrity endorser’s attributes can help organizations determine the most successful marketing strategies for attracting new customers and maintaining existing ones.

One of the major contributors to the relatively high levels of Greenhouse gas emissions in South Africa is road transportation. Electric vehicles (EVs) have been proposed as one of the solutions to this problem. However, the use of EVs is very limited in South Africa. Drawing on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), the study investigated the predictors of the intention to purchase EVs in South Africa. The study extended the TPB by adding three individual constructs (environmental consciousness, anticipated guilt and response efficacy) and two situational constructs (perceived benefits and perceived barriers). The cross-sectional survey method was used for data collection in a quantitative study. Descriptive statistics and structural equation modelling were used for data analysis. The results showed significant positive relationships between two TPB constructs (attitude and perceived behavioral control) and EV purchase intention. In addition, the effects of the environmental consciousness, response efficacy, perceived benefits and barriers are significant. Theoretically, the study extended the TPB to develop a model of EV purchase intention from the South African perspective. Empirically, the study added to the body of literature on the determinants of EV purchase intention. Practically, recommendations to improve the purchase of EVs are suggested.
